Sharon Horgan could be set to follow in the footsteps of another acclaimed multi-hyphenate, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, by earning Emmy bids for both writing and starring in a beloved show. While Waller-Bridge achieved that feat for her comedy “Fleabag,” Horgan could do it for her Apple TV+ drama “Bad Sisters.” Horgan co-created, starred in, and wrote several episodes of this hit show, which follows the five Garvey sisters who plot to murder John Paul (Claes Bang), the abusive husband of Anne-Marie Duff‘s Grace Garvey.
The show flashes between two timelines — one in which the sisters try to kill John Paul and one in which a pair of insurance investigators (Brian Gleeson‘s Thomas and Daryl McCormack‘s Matthew) try to prove the sisters’ involvement in John Paul’s death to save their own business.
Horgan teamed up with “New Girl” scribes Brett Baer and Dave Finkel to adapt the hit Belgian show “Clan.

“Bad Sisters” doesn’t have a good Rotten Tomatoes score, it has a perfect one. The Apple TV+ drama series merits a jaw-dropping 100% on this site that aggregates reviews.
Created by Sharon Horgan, Dave Finkel, and Brett Baer, “Bad Sisters” follows the five Garvey sisters (led by Horgan’s eldest sister Eva) as they try to kill Claes Bang‘s John Paul, the abusive husband of Grace Garvey (Anne-Marie Duff). The action moves between two timelines. The first follows the sisters plotting John Paul’s murder while the second shows two insurance agents (Brian Gleeson‘s Thomas and Daryl McCormack‘s Matthew) trying to prove that the sisters were involved in John Paul’s death in a desperate attempt to save their business.
The juxtaposing timelines make for a whip-smart drama full of pitch-black comedy and pitch-perfect performances. It’s obvious why the show has received that perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.

At the recent Spirit Awards, Sharon Horgan revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that she’s been hard at work writing the second season of her Apple TV+ series Bad Sisters, even if it sounds like she’s stuck in a battle with a snooze button.
“Sitting in bed is my new writing process at the moment. It’s like a writer’s room but in my bedroom,” explained Horgan with a laugh. “For now that’s what I’m doing and then every so often it breaks out into a Zoom with all the other writers. New Girl is getting a new streaming home. The comedy series will be leaving Netflix and moving to Hulu and Peacock next month as part of a shared agreement between the two streamers.
All 146 episodes will be available on Hulu and Peacock beginning April 17.

Sunday’s 75th Writers Guild of America Awards will conclude the guild season (and a four-guild kudos weekend). Will they portend good things to come at the Oscars for the winners?
“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and “Women Talking,” written by Sarah Polley, are projected to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes, respectively. The caveat, of course, is that neither is facing its top Oscar competition at WGA due to the guild’s eligibility requirements. Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin” script, which won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, is Awol in original, as is Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” And BAFTA’s adapted screenplay champ “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, is ineligible, along with Oscar nominee “Living.”

As overzealous insurance agent Thomas (Brian Gleeson) tries to prove Eva and her sisters’ involvement in the death, the show flips from the weeks following his funeral to the weeks leading up to his death, when Eva plotted to murder John Paul with Ursula (Eva Birthistle), Bibi (Sarah Greene), and Becka (Eve Hewson) in revenge for his abusive treatment of their sister Grace (Anne Marie-Duff).

Apple TV+ has renewed Bad Sisters, the dark comedy murder-mystery series from Sharon Horgan, for a second season.
The black comedy-drama, from Horgan’s Merman Television and Disney Television Studios’ ABC Signature, follows the tight-knit Garvey sisters, who all find themselves under investigation from life insurers when their brother-in-law is found dead.

“If you’d have told me three years ago that I’d be making a series about five murderous sisters chasing a man around Ireland trying to kill him, I’d have said, ‘Yeah, that sounds about right,’” said Horgan. “The response to our show had been beyond what we could have hoped for. It gave us the opportunity to shine a light on stories that don’t always get such a global platform. I look forward to getting chilly in the Irish Sea one more time.

Apple TV+ will spend more time with its group of Bad Sisters.
The tech behemoth’s streaming service has ordered a second season of its dark comedy/murder mystery Bad Sisters, co-created by and starring Sharon Horgan. The renewal comes comes a few weeks after the conclusion of the 10-episode first season, which has earned mostly positive reviews from critics (The Hollywood Reporter’s Angie Han called it “never boring” but also “slightly less than the sum of its parts”). Apple TV+ doesn’t self-report any viewing data, and the show did not break into Nielsen’s streaming top 10 during its run.

If Sharon Horgan’s attached to a show, there’s a more than decent chance that it’ll be a spiky comedy tinged with the tragedy of everyday indignities. From “Catastrophe” to “Motherland” to “Shining Vale,” Horgan’s cornered an enviable market that almost always delivers, especially when it comes to the ins and outs of being a smart woman in an increasingly dumb world. “Bad Sisters” — debuting Aug. 19 on Apple TV+ — is happily no exception.
From Horgan, Brett Baer and Dave Finkel, “Bad Sisters” takes the premise of the Belgian series “Clan” and twists it into a more Irish shape. Horgan stars as Eva, the eldest of five sisters who took on a more maternal role after both their parents died in a car crash. Joining her are Eva Birthistle (“The Last Kingdom”) as Ursula, a working mother at the end of her rope; Sarah Greene (“Normal People”) as Bibi,...

And playing those sisters alongside Horgan are Eve Hewson, Anne-Marie Duff (“Suffragette,” “The Salisbury Poisonings”), Eva Birthistle (“Brooklyn,” “The Last Kingdom”) and Sarah Greene (“Frank of Ireland,” “Dublin Murders”).
“Bad Sisters” is the first project out of Horgan’s first-look deal with Apple TV+ and her Merman production company.
Horgan is executive producer of “Shining Vale” on Starz, which is currently airing its first season, and whose cast features Courteney Cox, Greg Kinnear and Mira Sorvino. She was also behind Sarah Jessica Parker’s “Divorce” on HBO, and starred in and wrote/executive produced “Catastrophe,” which streamed on Amazon Prime Video.

The last-ever episode of “New Girl” airs tonight, Tuesday, on Fox, and no one is ready for it. Least of all, Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) who is going to be the “bearer of truly terrible news” for the gang in the series closer. News that not everyone finds all that bad, actually.
In the clip above, which is exclusive to TheWrap, Jess and Nick (Jake Johnson) gather Cece (Hannah Simone), Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Winston (Lamorne Morris) together at the loft to announce that — wait for it — they are being evicted within 24 hours and need to say goodbye to the home they have all (at one time or another) shared.
“Brace yourselves! Nick and I are moving out of the loft,” Jess says.

“That’s it?” Winston says, and it appears Cece and Schmidt are just as underwhelmed.

As “New Girl” winds down tonight after seven seasons on Fox, we’re already thinking ahead to how we can get one more new thing out of the Zooey Deschanel comedy.
Yeah, we’re talking a new series.
Because we’re not ready to let go of the Elizabeth Meriwether-created sitcom just yet, TheWrap asked executive producer and co-showrunner Brett Baer what the most sellable idea for a spinoff would be.
“For seven years, we’ve talked about ‘Schmidt Happens,’ so of course there is that show,” Baer said, laughing, referencing a series that would obviously center around Max Greenfield’s lovable jerk Schmidt.
“Then there of course is the Winston (Lamorne Morris) one-hour long cop drama with Aly (Nasim Pedrad) as his partner and wife. But you know, you play that real serious and you have actual, really gritty crimes,” he added, again, laughing.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “New Girl” Season 7, Episode 4 “Where the Road Goes.”]
“New Girl” has spent its final season covering a lot of ground. The three-year time jump in the premiere pushed several stories forward, which includes the ongoing relationship between Nick (Jake Johnson) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel), a child for Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece (Hannah Simone), and one on the way for Winston (Lamorne Morris) and Aly (Nasim Pedrad). Because of this fast-forwarding, the show has also been filling in the blanks of what happened during those three years.
On Tuesday’s episode, “Where the Road Goes,” the gang braves the rain and travels in a motorcade to a cemetery for a service for Winston’s beloved cat Furguson. It’s not a funeral but a memorial, performed according to Jewish tradition, to honor his passing a year before. Because apparently, Furguson was one of the Chosen People.

(Spoiler alert: Please do not read ahead unless you’ve seen Tuesday’s episode of “New Girl”)
Ok, the only thing sadder than “Where the Road Goes” — the most recent installment of the final season of Liz Meriwether’s “New Girl” — is the fact that one writer on the Fox comedy has been planning that plot for years.
Seriously, showrunner Brett Baer told TheWrap in a recent interview that the man who penned the script for Tuesday’s episode, which centers around a one-year memorial service thrown by Jess (Zooey Deschanel) for Winston’s (Lamorne Morris) beloved cat Furguson, was lobbying to kill off the kitty for a long time.
“Well it was an easy decision to make, mostly because I think the author, Noah Garfinkel, had been pitching that idea for four years and finally, just to shut him up, we agreed to do it,” co-showrunner Brett Baer said, laughing. “Well he just keeps going like, ‘We gotta do that episode, right?’ And we’re like ‘Shut up. No.’ So finally we go, ‘Alright, give Noah one.”

“No, I think more importantly than all of that, we knew obviously that [Furguson] was a fan favorite and we loved working with him and really he made such a strong contribution to the show and to Winston’s storyline,” Baer added. “He was so important to Winston, we wanted to do an important episode for Furguson. And I think in a cool way, even in his absence, and this is all spoiler alert s—, but in his absence, I think it gave us an opportunity to really invest in the Furguson storyline with the magnitude that it had for the character and for us as writers.”
Baer said the somber episode — which is of course still hilarious, because it’s “New Girl” — also gave them the chance to showcase other fan favorites, who aren’t series regulars, in the show’s final year.
“Being able to bring in all those characters to drop by for the memorial service gave us the opportunity to get Damon [Wayans Jr, who plays Coach] back into the show and the Lapd-So-la-Te-Do singing group,” Baer said. “Those were all things we wanted to get back in. So this was a unique way to tell Furguson’s story and not even have him there.”

And if you’re hoping to see even more beloved guest stars drop by before the series wraps, you are in luck, cause Baer said that yet another reunion is still to come.
“It was something we’d been looking for in the course of the season to come up with an episode or two that would force us — not force us — that would allow us to bring in a multitude of characters that you had seen over the course of the show. So we have that episode. There’s, in episode seven, something similar, which I won’t get into because we didn’t send that one out yet. Another one of the character’s dies. I’ll just tell you that! [laughs]”
The final season of “New Girl” airs Tuesdays at 9:30/8:30 c on Fox.

(Spoiler alert: Please do not read ahead unless you’ve seen Tuesday’s season seven premiere of “New Girl.”)
“New Girl” returned for its seventh and final season tonight with more than a few new elements, including a new character. A teeny, tiny one who the series’ co-showrunner Brett Baer told TheWrap is going to play a big part in the Zooey Deschanel-led comedy’s final few episodes: Ruth Bader Parekh Schmidt.
When the show picked up Tuesday after about a three-year time jump, fans were introduced to Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece’s (Hannah Simone) three-year-old daughter (played by twins Rhiannon and Danielle Rockoff), who they named after Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

TheWrap asked Baer about this hilarious decision in a recent interview and found out it had a lot to do with character growth on Schmidt’s part — a guy who was always very conservative and often objectified women at the beginning of the Elizabeth Meriwether-created series.
“I think that that came from wanting for Cece to have had some impact on that and Cece’s relationship with Jess (Deschanel) and their political leanings,” Baer said. “I think she probably went out with Schmidt on that,” Baer said. “And I think Schmidt always — you know, he’s a strict conservative. There was a time where I think he was hoping Paul Ryan would run in 2020?” (Oh, yes, there was.)
“But I think down in his soul though, he is a progressive when it comes to his daughter being a successful woman and wanting to support her being, as I think we talked about in one of the episodes, becoming President of the United States herself,” Baer added. “And I think he respects strong women, and he was always able to get along with Jess, who obviously had a different political leaning than he did.”

While fans may immediately find Ruth to be adorable and a great addition to the cast (and the series’ stars and writers did too!) Baer said they were apprehensive about their risky decision to bring a kid into the mix with just eight episodes left to wrap up the beloved show.
“We were terrified,” Baer said, laughing. “You’re introducing this really important element and you’ve got a dynamic and chemistry that this cast has and we knew this was a major contribution and change that could shift everything. You needed to have exactly the right person, or I should say people, in that part. And a lot of it came down to getting Max and Hannah to audition with our final prospects for the role. And Max is a father, and Hannah a new mother, and they have this incredible relationship with the actors who played Ruth. And they were really, really lovely together on set. Very, very welcoming.”
“And those kids were really funny,” Baer added. “There were many times we’d see a cut of the episodes and some of the scenes that they’re in we’d say, ‘Can we cut back to Ruth for a thing here? We need a laugh here.’ And we’d scrub through the footage and find an incredible, hilarious take or beat or reaction that would just give us an extra laugh.”

“They actually became a really important part of the show for us this season and not only from a storytelling standpoint, but just from a production standpoint looking for that great bit to get us out of a scene,” Baer said. “More often than not, we were able to find what we were looking for in their outtakes. And they had a great dynamic with Jake Johnson (who plays Nick) too, who was hilarious with them.”
