I have only ever seen Quadrophenia once in my life and honestly I wasn’t that enamoured with the movie, I’m not exactly a fan of The Who and I am a child of the late 80s early 90s, so the whole scooters and Mod subculture is kind of lost on me to be completely honest… it was more of a thing that people’s dads were into! However I have seen enough movies or TV shows that have touched on the era (This is England for example) to know it was, and to many will always be, an important part of history.
Luckily though, this movie didn’t have to appeal to my nostalgia bone. I didn’t press play because I have a huge love of everything Mod.

The Quadrophenia cast reunite for this claret-soaked mess of dodgy geezers, shady drug deals and noisy guitar riffs
‘Starring the original cast of Quadrophenia” proclaims the publicity for this lightweight romp, and true to its word, it features Leslie Ash, Toyah Willcox, Gary Shail, Trevor Laird, Mark Wingett and scores of heavily accessorised vintage scooters. That’s about where the similarity ends. Rather than the 1970s mod revival, it feels like the work of someone still stuck in the late 90s, when Britpop was all the rage and there was a hot new film-maker on the scene named Guy Ritchie. Yes, we’re in that territory: small-time gangsters, estuary accents, straight-to-camera asides explaining who’s who and what’s what, and tiresome character nicknames flashing up on the screen like Roger the Fix, Ginger Nick and Danny the Face. Someone even refers to blood as “claret”.

"We are coming back, aren't we?" This is an outstanding short that is undoubtedly worth a watch. Ruth is a one-take narrative short film by filmmakers Arturo M. Antolin & Paul Romero Mendez. This was made using the same kind of equipment and technique as with 1917, and was exec produced by Arri and Directors UK. Ruth, an elderly lady with dementia, becomes lost within her own home. As she seeks answers, she ends up losing herself further, confusing reality with memories of her past self. Starring the acclaimed actress Ania Marson as Ruth, with David Sterne, Leslie Ash, Catherine Banks, and Alex Boorman as her family members. Ruth is also a compelling companion to The Father with Anthony Hopkins, as they are both about the same subject of dementia. "Shot in a single 12-minute take, the film tries to put the audience in Ruth's shoes, making them feel first-hand the daily...

After making a recovery from a near-fatal superbug infection, the actor has struggled to find work. Now she has started making films herself
‘You see that grey building?” Leslie Ash says. We are standing at the window of her central London penthouse. “That’s Charing Cross hospital. Now, see that bit sticking out on the left? That was my room, on the top floor.” In 2004, Ash spent nearly three months there, recovering from the superbug methicillin-sensitive staphylococcus aureus (Mssa), a variant of Mrsa, perhaps watching her old life out of the window and wondering if she would ever get it back.
She had contracted the infection from a different hospital, the Chelsea and Westminster – she believes from an epidural needle – after being admitted with cracked ribs, and for weeks it was unclear whether she would walk again. Her husband, the former footballer Lee Chapman, and her two sons, were warned that she might die.

It feels like only yesterday that Gemma Collins was crying mascara stained tears while complaining of contracting malaria - but this year's I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here is now just a mere month away.
Last year's series saw Carl Fogarty crowned King of the Jungle. But which stars will be enduring the Australian kangaroo anus-eating adventures on the ITV show this year? Here's the rumoured line-up so far:
Stephanie Davis
Who? Former Hollyoaks actress who was recently axed due to being "unfit to work because of alcohol consumption".
The rumour: The 22-year-old is reportedly "hot property" as a number of reality shows try to sign her up, according to The Mirror's unnamed insider. Cinema’s Hidden Pearls – Part II
By Alex Simon
One of nature’s rarest items, a pearl is produced within the soft tissue (specifically the mantle) of a living shelled mollusk. Just like the shell of a clam, a pearl is composed of calcium carbonate in minute crystalline form, which has been deposited in concentric layers. Truly flawless pearls are infrequently produced in nature, and as a result, the pearl has become a metaphor for something rare, fine, admirable and valuable.
Hidden pearls exist in the world of movies, as well: films that, in spite of being brilliantly crafted and executed, never got the audience they deserved beyond a cult following.
Here are a few more of our favorite hidden pearls in the world of film:

Neil Morrissey has reiterated that he would "love" to work on a new series of Men Behaving Badly.
The sitcom aired 42 episodes between 1992 and 1998, and featured the likes of Martin Clunes, John Thomson, Caroline Quentin and Leslie Ash.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain about new episodes, Morrissey said: "I am always tempted. Oh gosh yeah, I would do it at the drop of a hat."
The actor again seemed to suggest that co-star Clunes would be hardest to pin down, days after saying similar in another interview.
Calling Clunes a "very busy boy", Morrissey added: "It would come down to scripts and it would come down to people wanting it in the first place."
He also explained that the idea of a revival "keeps getting mentioned, once every couple of years".
"Yeah, well let's see, I'd love to do it," he concluded.

After 15 years away, Men Behaving Badly returns to our screens tonight (October 17) for a one-off sketch during the Stand Up To Cancer telethon on Channel 4.
During the 1990s, the sitcom became one of the most popular shows in the UK, at the height of lad culture, with Martin Clunes and Neil Morrissey creating one of the best TV bromances in Gary and Tony. It also holds the distinction of airing on three different channels (ITV, BBC One and Channel 4).
To celebrate its (brief) return, here are just a small collection of the show's most hilarious moments to influence you to binge on the boxset this weekend.
1. Sailing ('Drunk', Series 4)
While Dorothy (Caroline Quentin) prepares a romantic meal for Gary, he and Tony indulge in an epic drinking session at The Crown. Before heading back absolutely sloshed, they partake in a drinking game singing Rod Stewart's 'Sailing'. This should happen every night.

If Danny Boyle has taught us anything about what it is to be British, it is to be proud of all that we have accomplished for what is usually deemed a ‘tiny Island’. England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland has many a merit of their own accord, yet as a collective, we are simply the greatest nation on Earth…Or at least, that’s what any British person would tell you.
There are reasons to be proud and patriotic, yet the British film industry only really likes to focus on the mundane, grim and all together gloomy side to our nation. If you look deeper than the surface we struggle to hold in front of the worlds face, there is so much in our history and our present to be both ashamed and saddened by.

Chicago – Social history is often the seed for actual history. The simple story of two youth gangs in England in the early 1960s – The Mods and The Rockers – is grist for the incredible social history film, “Quadrophenia.” The new Criterion Collection Blu-ray DVD release of this 1979 classic will satisfy any side of the ardent rock admirer, especially those of the magnificent rock group “The Who” – the film is based on their lesser known 1973 rock opera of the same name.
Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
This was originally produced by The Who Films, and The Criterion Collection creates a lavish package with background information and the history of the clash between the mid-1960s British youth of “The Mods” – a clean cut style associated with the music of “The Who, as well as soul, R&B and the Mersey Beat – and “The Rockers,” who favored more of the direct, Marlon-Brando-in-”The-Wild-One” motorcycles and 1950s rock.

Quadrophenia (Criterion) Franc Roddam’s 1979 film based on The Who’s classic rock opera tells the story of working class lad Jimmy (Phil Daniels) struggling to find his identity in a rapidly changing Britain, circa 1965. Jimmy is a “mod,” a youth movement dedicated to wearing snappy suits, driving Vespa motor scooters bedecked with side mirrors, popping amphetamines and obsessed with the new sound of bands like The Who and The Kinks. Their other pastime is engaging in bloody brawls with “rockers,” throwbacks to the 1950s, who listen to Elvis and Gene Vincent, wear leather biker gear, grease in their hair and drive massive motorcycles a la Marlon Brando in “The Wild One.” Often cited as a worthy successor to “Rebel Without a Cause” as the greatest angry youth picture ever made, it is that and more, including a first cousin to the “kitchen sink” dramas of scribes John Osborne,...

Phil Daniels takes Leslie Ash for a spin in Quadrophenia.
The Who’s 1973 rock opera Quadrophenia, a follow-up to their 1969 ground-breaker Tommy (which was made into movie in 1972), goes cinematic in this 1979 British musical drama film by director Franc Roddam (The Bride).
In the defiant, drug-fueled London of the early 1960s. antihero Jimmy (Phil Daniels, Meantime) is a teenager who’s dissatisfied with family, work, and love. He mainly identifies with the fashionable, pill-popping, scooter-driving mods, a group whose opposition to the motorcycle-riding rockers. Jimmy’s feelings, coupled with the groups’ overpowering intentions, leads to a climactic riot in the streets of Brighton.
Roddam’s rough-edged visuals work and Pete Townshend’s brilliant songs (including “I’ve Had Enough,” “5:15,” and “Love, Reign O’er Me”) work smartly together in this chronicle of youthful rebellion and turmoil.

Sadie Frost, Gary Kemp, Phil Collins – they all started out in movies from the Children's Film Foundation
A forgotten catalogue of hundreds of British children's films, all shot in the school holidays from the 1950s to 1980s, is to be re-released after lying dormant while many of their young stars rose to fame.
Performers such as Phil Collins, Michael Crawford, Leslie Ash, Susan George, Sadie Frost and Gary Kemp all got their first screen work in Children's Film Foundation features, which entertained the nation's youth at Saturday morning cinema screenings. The British Film Institute has announced that it will be releasing the entire catalogue and screening many of the best features at special events which are sure to attract nostalgic fans and social historians.
"The early black-and-white films from the 1950s were rather middle-class and wholesome, so you can imagine the children throwing their ice cream tubs at the screen back then,...

Martin Clunes has ruled out a revival of his classic sitcom Men Behaving Badly, suggesting that the show would appear "too seedy" now the cast have aged. Clunes appeared alongside Neil Morrissey, Caroline Quentin and Leslie Ash in the series, which ran on ITV and later the BBC between 1992 and 1998. Asked if he could see Men Behaving Badly returning to TV, the 50-year-old argued that the lad culture present on the show would make for uncomfortable viewing nowadays. "To be perfectly honest, (more)...

It's the mid-way point of the month, and Cannes or no Cannes, the Criterion Collection will do their traditional unveiling of their releases for three months down the line. After a banner July line-up, which included Jim Jarmusch, Whit Stillman and Aki Kaurismaki, could the beloved specialty top themselves for August? Well, perhaps not, but there's a few very pleasant surprises in the latest batch of announcements.
Perhaps the biggest news for cinephiles is the Criterion debut of the Dardenne Brothers, hot off their critically acclaimed new film "The Kid With The Bike." The Belgian filmakers haven't yet had a film included in the selection, but that'll change on August 14th, when both 1996's "La promesse" and 1999's "Rosetta" are released. The films will be available on both DVD & Blu-Ray, and contain new interviews, and a conversation between the filmmakers and critic Scott Foundas, as well as the usual trailers and booklets.

If Sean Bean has a hole in his schedule, Andrew has a few film pitches that might interest him...
What can you say about Sean Bean that hasn't been said before? He's like a Moomin Shaman. His love is deeper than the sun and he's as gentle as a mother's kiss.
Apologies if your mother sometimes gets a bit carried away. No one needs those flashbacks.
While Robert Carlyle selfishly took the lead role in Sawney Bean, there are still movies out there, potentially, with a Sean Bean shaped hole in them. The Hobbit is set about 78 years before The Fellowship Of The Ring, but maybe Ecthelion II looks quite like his grandson. And maybe, what with it being a Fantasy film, Ecthelion II can somehow have an even more spectacular death than his son. Who can have a baby with Sean Bean's face. I'm fairly sure Weta could...

What did director Franc Roddam do after Quadrophenia? He moved to La, tried to woo Robert Redford – and ended up making MasterChef.
'You go to Hollywood," says Franc Roddam, "and the better you are at mediocrity, the better you'll get on. I tried to make personal films, which was a mistake." The director of Quadrophenia is explaining why he hasn't made a film in 20 years. After the huge success of his 1979 debut, the screen version of the Who's rock opera, Roddam headed to California with dreams of joining the gang.
He signed a three-picture deal with Fox, aiming to make ambitious, political, principled films. First up was Rainforest, a story about the destruction of the Amazon. Roddam spent six months in South America, honing his concept, befriending the locals. Meanwhile, Robert Redford was umm-ing and ahh-ing about signing on as his lead.
"I spent 18 months nurturing Redford," says Roddam. "He...

Pauline Kael (1919 – 2001) was an American film critic who wrote for The New Yorker magazine from 1968 to 1991. She is often regarded as the most influential American film critic of her day.
Although a big advocate of the New Hollywood of the 70’s, some of her reviews carried a somewhat contrarian viewpoint of what many considered classics in modern era.

Martin Clunes has ruled out a TV comeback for Men Behaving Badly. The 47-year-old actor, who played Gary Strang in the '90s sitcom, claimed that a sequel would not have the same appeal for viewers because the cast are now too old. Clunes and his co-stars Neil Morrissey (Tony), Caroline Quentin (Dorothy) and Leslie Ash (Deborah) filmed the final episode of the BBC One programme in 1998 and have since moved on to other projects. Asked if Gary and Tony's antics would still work on screen, Clunes commented: "It may be seen as a bit seedy." Speaking to The Mirror, he continued: (more)...

Now this is what I call a comeback - Carole Ann Ford is returning to the world of Doctor Who in a brand new story opposite Paul McGann, in An Earthly Child. It seems that that the couple of Companion Tales that Ms Ford took part in have whetted her appetite for something new, and who better than the Eighth Doctor to find himself on 22nd century Earth and face to face with this granddaughter... and great grandson?! The cast also stars Leslie Ash (Men Behaving Badly) as Marion Fleming and Ian...
