War, of course, is hell. We know this, but it stands that we should be reminded now and again. With The Yellow Birds, filmmaker Alexandre Moors tries to find beauty in the brutality. From a screenplay by David Lowery and R.F.I. Porto and based on the novel by Kevin Powers, the film centers on two young soldiers, Brandon Bartle (Alden Ehrenreich) and Daniel Murphy (Tye Sheridan), in the thick of the Iraq War.
Taking orders from the intense and unstable Sergeant Sterling (Jack Huston, doing a lot here, for better and worse), Bartle and Murphy become fast friends. At a family event, Murphy’s mother Maureen (Jennifer Aniston, also on as executive producer) meets Bartle and asks that he look after her son. This interaction underlines the conflict to come.
The narrative is structured around a mystery: what happened to Murphy? It’s a disjointed framework, in which we slowly...

Movie studios are still anxious to bring Mass Effect to the big screen. After it's initial announcement and a couple years of talk, fans have been buzzing about who could portray some of their favorite characters. The Mass Effect characters are beloved and gamers have followed their stories through the years spanning three great games, some books, and even a comic book series. Casting for the film is sure to be controversial (as it always is), so I’ve come up with my own list of actors I think could handle the iconic roles and why they fit so well.
Mass Effect is an epic story, and the filmmakers are going to have their hands full with adapting it well. If done correctly it’s got the potential to be one of the greatest science fiction films around. Yet more than just the story, I feel that the casting is going to be crucial.

There are a lot of videogames that fans would like to see made into movies, but some of those games are either fatally flawed in such a way that the transfer to the silver screen would ruin it, or so likely to run into interference from Hollywood executives that they would be unlikely to get made into good movies. Keep in mind that I’m talking about live action movies and not animated stuff because the two mediums follow different paths and have different things that can be done better or worse.
So with that in mind here’s a taste of the best examples…
15. Mass Effect
While there already is a Mass Effect movie in development, and it’s not clear until it comes out whether or not it will be terrible, there’s a lot of bad cards in the deck stacked against it. First and foremost is...

If the Emmys ever decide to recognize the USA Network, and the Academy takes rightful notice of what a fantastic performance Christopher Gorham continues to display on Covert Affairs, "Half a World Away" should be his submission episode.
With Auggie taking center stage, viewers - and Annie - finally learned how this tech went blind. This has been on Annie's mind over the last year or so almost as much as mine.
It was the grand scale of the material that made "Half a World Away" such a great episode, along with such a platform for Gorham to steal the show once again.
In essence, he was playing two characters. These were two extremely different versions of the same guy. In every flashback sequence, he became the freewheeling Captain Anderson of the Special Forces; a shirtless, short-haired, football-playing, sighted Auggie that was hard not to love just as much as the 2011 version.

Update: Wisconsin Senate Republicans voted to strip state workers of their collective bargaining rights on Wednesday. The Democratic senators' presence was not required after the Gop separated the measure from a spending package so that it no longer required a quorum. The final vote was 18-1, with Republican Dale Schultz casting the only vote against the bill. The move could come back to bite Republicans: Polling showed citizens of Wisconsin, by a two-to-one majority, were expecting a compromise.

Do you remember the Super Mario Bros movie? Either you’ve erased it from your memory, or failing that, it’s ingrained itself onto your brain forever, like some virtual cattle-brand. It was the stuff of nightmares, a true example of Hollywood at its appallingly naïve worst. They took a game based on a fundamentally light-hearted adventure in which two whacky Italian brothers side-scroll across the screen, jumping on Goombas and eating colourful mushrooms (which explains a great deal)... and turned it into a dystopian B-movie. It had zero resemblance to the game except for the slapped-on character names.
Yet for the changes within the industry itself, Hollywood’s take hasn’t changed a bit. If you take a look at the track record of game-to-movie adaptations across the years, it’s plain to see that the standard has not been raised one bit. Movies like Street Fighter, House of the Dead,...
