While the idea of comedy on television has been warped by the Emmys, some shows can deliver the joke factories that once littered the TV landscape. Three-camera sitcoms may be out of vogue, but Hacks takes the best bits of those shows and applies them to a single-camera setup. Hacks shines as the best of both worlds with withering jokes and incredible performances. It’s among the most poignant and topical shows of the moment while laying track that will allow it to hold up in the decades to come. It does not hurt that Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are two of the funniest people on television.

“Hacks” is back on Max for Season 3 on May 2, and the streaming service released a new trailer for the Emmy-winning comedy on Tuesday.
In Season 3, Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) reunites with Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) after Deborah fired her at the end of Season 2 so Ava could pursue her own dreams. Now, after months apart, they’re both at different places in their careers – with the success of her special, Deborah is back on top, while Ava has enough self-respect to demand that Deborah not make fun of her appearance (yeah right) – and they’re going to try to take advantage of their momentum. “Anything I want to do, I have to do them now,” Deborah tells Ava. She has to strike while the curling iron is hot.

Johnny Knoxville Says Give Hulu ‘More Credit’ than Just Assuming It Canceled the Show Over Meta Digs
Johnny Knoxville doesn’t want to have “Jackass” reaction to the untimely cancellation of “Reboot.”
The comedy series, created by “Modern Family” Emmy winner Steven Levitan, starred Knoxville, Keegan-Michael Key, and Judy Greer as former ’90s sitcom stars who reunite to revive their show. Hilton-Jacobs appeared on Scott Patterson’s I Am All In podcast on Sept. 7 to talk about his role on Gilmore Girls. He described being the only man to audition for the role of Principal Merton.
A room full of women auditioning for Principal Merton intimidated Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs
Apparently, Principal Merton only has a last name. That meant the principal could have been either a man or a woman. When Hilton-Jacobs got to the Gilmore Girls audition, he thought he was out of his element.
“It was funny, man, on casting, I was the only male...

At the first Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony in 1995, the cast of “Seinfeld” took the stage as the inaugural Best TV Comedy Ensemble recipients. The series, which starred stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld as a fictionalized version of himself, was one of several shows about the entertainment industry nominated for the group prize that year, with “Frasier” and “Murphy Brown” having been respectively centered on the radio and news media subsectors. Over the last quarter century, the casts of many other comedies about show business have competed and sometimes won here, and now the stars of “Hacks” are hoping to make good on their second try.
Like “Seinfeld,” “Hacks” is centered on the stand-up comedy profession, but the similarities end there. The HBO Max show’s main character is septuagenarian female comic Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), who is entirely fictional and primarily performs in the American West, as opposed to New York.

In Hulu’s “Reboot,” a meta comedy from “Modern Family” creator Steven Levitan, Johnny Knoxville plays edgy stand-up comedian Clay Barber. After multiple stints in jail, he gets the chance to reprise his role in a wholesome family sitcom after, yes, Hulu, decides to reboot it 20 years later.
Unlike Clay, Knoxville is “very good” at dubbing lines and is — at least according to his co-star Keegan-Michael Key — “an absolute gentleman.” But the 51-year-old actor and stuntman admits that there’s “more than a little” of himself in his character. Both were branded as bad boys and lived fast lifestyles in the public eye. Eventually, Knoxville had to cool off, and in the cleverly named “Reboot,” Clay works to turn his life around and stay sober.
Speaking about his own journey, Knoxville tells Variety, “I had to slow down. I was running hot. You’re a fool if you live like...

It stands to reason that “Reboot” is immediately an entertainment biz turducken of industry lingo and in-jokes. From “Modern Family” creator Steven Levitan, the new Hulu series depicts the reboot — also airing on Hulu — of a family sitcom and all the behind-the-scenes drama that inevitably follows. Levitan, whose credits include “Just Shoot Me” and “Wings,” obviously knows his way around a multi-cam, and his pilot co-writer John Enbom made a meal in “Party Down” of exploiting the seediest corners of Hollywood ambition. The combination of the two sensibilities makes for a (mostly) realistic peek into life on a studio lot, but that’s probably a given. That it ends up (mostly) toothless comes as a genuine surprise.
Premiering with three episodes on Sept. 20, the series opens with harried millennial Hannah (Rachel Bloom of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) getting the greenlight to revive the seemingly ordinary ’90s sitcom “Step Right Up.” It’s...

Sitcom king Steven Levitan (from “Just Shoot Me!” to “Modern Family”) has done it again. The creator’s latest series, “Reboot,” is a hilarious vehicle for skewering generational clashes, writer’s room workplace dysfunction, cancel culture, actors’ bottomless neuroses and the sitcom industry that Levitan’s called home for three decades. Treated with affection and scalpel-like wit, “Reboot” doesn’t need a laugh track because over eight half-hour episodes on Hulu it’s consistently laugh-out-loud funny.
Here’s the premise, which on its face seems as recycled as the title, “Reboot.” An appealingly mensch-y Rachel Bloom (co-creator and star of the musical-dramedy “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) plays the deeply relatable, anxiety-stricken first-time showrunner Hannah. Hulu has given Hannah the greenlight to reboot an early 2000s sofa-anchored family sitcom, “Step Right Up.” Made it, Ma! Or maybe not.

The past week in the Big Brother house has been one for the books — for all of the worst reasons, unfortunately.
During Wednesday’s episode of the CBS reality staple, a long-brewing controversy involving Season 24 houseguest Kyle Capener came to a head, as Kyle was forced to reckon with racist remarks he’s made about his fellow players. (Update: After you’ve caught up on Wednesday’s happenings below, read our recap of Thursday’s live hour to find out how Kyle’s week concluded.)

A beloved Gilmore Girls star will appear on season two of Ghosts—and discovered a spooky connection along the way! Rose Abdoo, who played Stars Hollow mechanic Gypsy on the series from 2001 to 2007, will guest star on the upcoming season of the CBS comedy, E! News can confirm. Abdoo will play Paula, according to the network, "a no nonsense veteran TV producer of a show called Dumb Deaths, which comes to use Woodstone Mansion as a shooting location." The actress, who also plays Deborah Vance's (Jean Smart) estate manager Josefina on HBO Max's Hacks, uncovered a very serendipitous connection to Ghosts star Rose McIver while filming the show. "A couple of Roses!" Abdoo...

Ghosts has scared up a Season 2 cast addition in the form of Gilmore Girls alum Rose Abdoo, who will guest-star during the CBS comedy’s sophomore run, TVLine has confirmed.
