Jennifer Garner is one of the most prolific actresses working today. The actress has been a part of films such as 13 Going on 30, Juno, Pearl Harbor, Daredevil, and Elektra. While Garner has been taking it slow on the acting front, she recently seemed to have an emotional day as her eldest daughter, Violet Affleck, reportedly graduated high school.
The Family Switch star posted a thread of photos of her getting emotional while on the way to her daughter’s graduation. She even had a video of her crying on the plane and multiple images of her being proud of her daughter. Many celebrities supported the actress, including Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Reynolds, and Michelle Pfeifer.

In this edition of THR Frontrunners, Girls5Eva creator and showrunner Meredith Scardino and stars Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sara Bareilles, Busy Phillips and Paula Pell joined The Hollywood Reporter‘s Tyler Coates for a conversation about the third season of the Netflix comedy series at a live event hosted by the San Vincente Bungalows in Los Angeles.
“It was heavenly,” said Pell about the streamer picking up the series — the first two seasons of which aired on Peacock — for its third season. “It’s like art imitating life: Our characters have second chances.”
Scardino added that a lot of the comedy, which follows the exploits of a turn-of-the-millennium girl group who are thrust back into the spotlight decades later when a Gen-z rapper samples their pop hit, is sparked from the four stars’ incredible bond both on- and off-camera. “They have a joke that I have weekly meetings with their therapists,...

Oprah Winfrey Apologizes For Promoting “Diet Culture”. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Oprah Winfrey recently reflected on past mistakes that included promoting unsustainable weight loss methods during her time on her popular eponymous talk show. During a three-hour live WeightWatchers special for WeightWatchers on Thursday, May 9, Oprah acknowledged her complicity in promoting unsafe “diet culture” through her talk show and magazines.
The apology comes months after Oprah Winfrey revealed that she had lost 40 pounds using a weight-loss medication Ozempic despite previously calling it an “easy way out.”
In 2012, during an episode of “Oprah Daily’s The Life You Want: The State of Weight,” the talk show host shaded the celebrity weight loss trend Ozempic, saying, “If I take the drug, that’s the easy way out.”

Oprah Winfrey apologized for being a “major contributor” to America’s toxic diet culture. During an event hosted by Weight Watchers on Thursday, Winfrey took responsibility for promoting unhealthy weight loss methods and expressed regret for profiting from diet culture in her shows.
“I have been a steadfast participant in this diet culture. Through my platforms, through the magazine, through the talk show for 25 years and online . . . I’ve been a major contributor to it,” Winfrey stated. “I cannot tell you how many weight-loss shows and makeovers I have done, and they have been a staple since I’ve been working in television.”
“I’ve shared how that famous ‘wagon of fat’ moment on the Oprah show is one of my biggest regrets. It sent a message that starving yourself with a liquid diet, set a standard for people watching that I nor anybody else could uphold,” she said.

“Girls5eva” deserves to be heard. Yes, the laugh-out-loud comedy, from the minds of Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, creator Meredith Scardino and others, is funny. The music industry is wickedly skewered. The music, led by Jeff Richmond, is clever and catchy.
But really, the heart of the show comes from its stars — Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell — and the characters they play. These are women of a certain age who are rediscovering their voices and finally taking on their dreams, after years of settling for something less.
Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast recently spoke to Philipps and Pell about Season 3 of “Girls5eva,” what the show has meant to them and the special message that it resonates between the laughs. Listen below!

Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, take a look through our photo gallery featuring the ladies most likely to land in the lineup. Jenna Fischer put her acting skills to the test on the set of 2024’s Mean Girls. The actress revealed this week she filmed the movie with a broken shoulder.
“I shot for one day on Mean Girls, and then I didn’t have to shoot for a month,” Fischer told People. “And in that month I went on a ski trip and I fell on a sidewalk and I broke my shoulder. So I had to shoot the rest of the movie with a very newly broken shoulder.”
Fischer played Ms. Heron, the daughter of protagonist Cady (Angourie Rice) in the musical movie. After she returned with her arm in a sling, the actress said the crew got creative in accommodating the injury.

New Yorkers were shaken up on Friday morning when a 4.8-magnitude earthquake hit Lebanon, New Jersey, and was felt across the tri-state area.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake at 10:23 a.m. local time, in the Jersey city about 45 miles west of New York City and 50 miles north of Philadelphia. According to The Associated Press, the agency notes that more than 42 million people may have felt the quake.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul posted on X that the quake was felt throughout the state: “My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day.”
New York-based figures like late night host Jimmy Fallon and Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood Jr. responded to the earthquake with humor.
Fallon wrote in a tweet that has since been deleted, “Having a dance party with Godzilla rn in NYC. Sorry for the scare.

What happens when you plan an extravagant worldwide tour… and nobody shows up?
That, unfortunately, seems to be the case for Girls5eva, the sharp and sassy music-industry comedy that moved from Peacock to Netflix for its third season this month. The show — staring Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell as the members of a forgotten Y2K-era girl group attempting a middle-age comeback — was never properly appreciated during its two Peacock seasons, and it felt like a lifeline when it got picked up by Netflix for Season 3, since the streaming giant routinely turns its acquired shows into monster hits.

My guest this week is Renée Elise Goldsberry.
A Tony and Grammy winner and Emmy nominee for her Broadway performance in Hamilton, Goldsberry starred as Nettie in the original Broadway production of The Color Purple and as Mimi in Rent, along with roles in TV series The Good Wife and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and the movie Tick, Tick… Boom! Now, you can see her flex both her acting and musical muscles in Girls5eva Season 3—the comedy series that earned Goldsberry Critics Choice nominations in 2022 and 2023. The show recently moved to Netflix for its third season.
Girls5eva follows an early aughts girl group as they try to get the band back together 20 years later. It’s a sort of Spice Girls reunion tour meets Spinal Tap with a side of Bridesmaids. Case in point: Goldsberry, as wannabe popstar Wickie Roy, announces that, like Billie Eilish, she too can have a documentary.

Netflix’s password-sharing crackdown is working. Well, it is and maybe it isn’t.
According to a new study of more than 2,500 U.S. households performed by Leichtman Research Group (Lrg), 10 percent of Netflix users are still borrowing the service. If that feels low, it is — according to recent history, at least. In 2022, Lrg found that 15 percent of Netflix users were borrowing someone else’s paid account; the rate was 14 percent in 2020 and 16 percent in 2018.
Ten percent starts to feel less small when you do the math. Netflix has 260 million global paid users, which (basically) means that 26 million users are still not being monetized. Assuming they should be paying at least $7.99/month apiece — the going rate to share with an outsider — that’s $200 million-plus in monthly revenue not being collected.
A Netflix rep did not immediately respond to IndieWire’s request for comment on Lrg’s findings.

Listen up fives — and by that I mean fours. “Girls5eva” is now streaming on Netflix and you’ve run out of excuses. This heightened, hilarious series from “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” writer Meredith Scardino is exactly the kind of bingeable romp that Netflix users allegedly crave, so why aren’t you watching, rewatching, and recommending?
The title “Girls5eva” refers to a fictitious girl group from the late-90s and early-aughts, as well as their breakout song (cause 4eva‘s too short!): Dawn (Sara Bareilles), Summer (Busy Phillips), Gloria (Paula Pell), and Wickie (Renée Elise Goldsberry). Girls5Eva was dropped by Peacock before it moved to Netflix and now it seems like the streaming service might be getting ready to drop it too. Keep reading to see why fans think it may be the next popular series to get the axe and what the future of the show might be.

James Van Der Beek and Kerr Smith are looking back at filming Dawson’s Creek and recalled some death-defying experiences they had on jet skis at the time.
This week, the two actors told People magazine at 90s Con in Hartford, Connecticut, that things would sometimes get a bit wild behind the scenes of the hit teen drama when they were filming in Wilmington, North Carolina.
“A couple of the guys on the crew had boats and you know we had the guest stars come in and the writers come in every episode and we would take them out on the water on the weekends,” Smith, who played Jack McPhee, recalled. “We’d stop and eat crab in the morning yet. And we’d fill up the boats with whatever we needed. We would barbecue out on the island. We all had jet skis.”

The sitcom “Girls5eva” follows the attempted comeback of a fictional girl group that peaked in the early 2000s, now reunited as middle-aged women. But headed into its third season, it’s “Girls5eva,” not just Girls5eva, that’s trying to start anew. After two critically acclaimed, if evidently little-watched, seasons on Peacock, the show has been resurrected by Netflix, which has bankrolled a fresh batch of episodes and made the entire back catalog available to its massive audience of over 260 million global subscribers — many of whom will encounter “Girls5eva” for the first time as a Netflix original.

When she’s not earning laughs as the flighty but metamorphosing Summer Dutkowsky, the self-proclaimed “hot one” of Girls5eva, the real Busy Philipps — beloved actor, internet personality, and podcaster — has spent the past seven years building a reputation as the brutally honest one.
Around 2017, Philipps started chronicling her daily life on the then-nascent Instagram Stories, speaking directly into the camera with a confessional “Ok … You guys …,” followed by whatever might pop into her brain at any given moment. One story, for example, is an admission of keeping running shoes...

Starting today, three seasons of Girls5eva — the Tina Fey-produced comedy starring Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, and Paula Pell as members of a one-hit wonder pop group struggling to mount a comeback in middle age — are streaming on Netflix. The average subscriber will be forgiven for assuming the show, is, and always was, a Netflix original they just never noticed before, especially since the third season features a couple of meta jokes about being on the streaming giant. (The parents of Goldsberry’s Wickie, for instance, like to binge shows on Streamberry,...

There’s a very specific brand of broad silliness that Tina Fey and Robert Carlock have championed across comedies like 30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Mr. Mayor. Their shows exist in a fluid reality where it feels like anything is possible.
Meredith Scardino worked on the latter of these two series and her original creation, Girls5Eva, is very much cut from the same absurdist cloth. The music industry lampoon received plenty of attention when it first premiered on Peacock, only to fade away like a forgotten pop music group. It’s exciting that Netflix has rescued the effort, which is just as hilarious as ever, yet Girls5Eva still feels destined to resonate with a niche crowd instead of becoming the streaming service’s next big hit. This comedy can hit the right notes, but it’s not going to pack a stadium full of fans.

Girls5eva, which is headed into its third season this week, tells the story of four women who were members of a briefly popular girl band and are now back together, two decades later, in a second attempt at success. The show pokes fun at the absurdity of the real pop culture landscapes in both the ’90s and today, but the cast and crew want to be clear: The laughs are made with love.
“The show, for us, has always been this beautiful kind of healing,” star Renee Elise Goldsberry tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It gives refuge.”
The Tiny Fey-produced comedy is written and created by Meredith Scardino (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and stars Goldsberry, Sara Bareilles, Paula Pell and Busy Philipps.
Part of that healing, Goldsberry and her castmates say, comes from their regard for Scardino’s source material.

Back in May 2021, singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles returned to the Hollywood Bowl to promote a new album. At one point, she invited her “Girls5eva” co-stars — Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell and Busy Philipps — to join her onstage. The quartet performed the song “4 Stars” from the comedy, marking the first and only time they’ve sung together in public.
But here’s the rub: This was the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, and all 17,500 seats around the Hollywood Bowl were empty. Bareilles’ concert was being livestreamed, and the cast had no idea what the fans at home felt about their performance.
Which sounds a lot like the fate of “Girls5eva” itself. The comedy was one of the first original series on Peacock, but on a nascent streamer, the audiences weren’t huge. Critics and a small cadre of fans embraced the Tina Fey-produced comedy, but it never caught on with a broader viewership.

A joke from Mean Girls which Lindsay Lohan pushed back against seems to be missing from at-home versions of the film released last week.
The movie musical version of the film, which began as Tina Fey’s beloved 2004 movie starring Lohan and then went to Broadway before making its way back to the screen this year, became available on digital platforms last week after its theatrical debut in January.
The film, which opened 2024 with a bang at the box office, featured a cameo from Megan Thee Stallion telling Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) that “Y2K fire crotch is back.”
In 2006, a TMZ video made headlines for oil empire heir Brandon Davis’ insulting comments about Lohan, which included him referring to the actress as a “fire crotch.”
The controversial joke is now missing from some versions of the film’s digital release, including an edition rented from Amazon by The Hollywood Reporter.

The series, which premiered in 2021, stars Sara Bareilles, Paula Pell, Busy Philipps, and Renée Elise Goldsberry as former teen pop stars who now want to get the band back together. Created by Meredith Scardino (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt; Great News), the series was one of the flat-out funniest shows on TV through its first two seasons, harnessing the musical-comedic gifts of Goldsberry, finally giving Pell a platform upon which to shine, and discovering that Bareilles is a skillful comedian in addition to being a devastatingly good singer-songwriter.

A musical comedy television series created by Meredith Scardino, “Girls5eva,” started life as a Peacock series before getting canceled after a second season. In the video, show regulars Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell are back with their fan-favorite girl band comedy. With little support, the band bets against the odds to head on tour for their album Returnity and book a gig on the late night show.
The first two seasons of Girls5eva premiered on Peacock, but the streamer announced in 2022 that it would not continue the series. Netflix will now release the show’s third season on March 14, the same day fans will also be able to access seasons one and two on the mega-streamer.
