Though the whole cinema’s concept originally boils down to the idea that the action itself is much more important than the words that accompany it, some modern directors seem to have perceived this idea quite literally.
It all started earlier this year when Denis Villeneuve expressed his hope for once seeing movies that would contain no words at all, stressing that he hates dialogue. The director later on made a U-turn admitting that the dialogue is still crucial, yet he seems to have accidentally started a whole new trend of removing all the lines from the films, and one more proclaimed director has joined the movement.
Ironically, both filmmakers have one more thing, or rather an actress, in common as they both invited Anya Taylor-Joy to make an appearance in their brand new films. The actress starred in Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 2 earlier this year and now is...

In a new profile of “Furiosa” director George Miller published by The Telegraph, it’s revealed that Anya Taylor-Joy’s eponymous character only has around 30 lines of dialogue in the upcoming “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel movie. That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to fans of the road warrior franchise, as Tom Hardy and Mel Gibson barely had much to say in Miller’s previous “Mad Max” movies. However, Taylor-Joy did push Miller to let Furiosa get loud in the new movie.
In an interview with The New York Times, Taylor-Joy said she would go “months” on the movie’s set without speaking a single line of dialogue. She added: “I’ve never been more alone than making that movie. I don’t want to go too deep into it, but everything that I thought was going to be easy was hard.”

The making of "Mad Max: Fury Road" is the stuff of legend, as chronicled in Kyle Buchanan's wildly entertaining book, "Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road." That being the case, it's only to be expected that the cast and crew of the new prequel film, "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," would have some tall tales of their own to regale about what went into the making of director George Miller's return to the Wasteland. Doubly so for star Anya Taylor-Joy, who follows in Charlize Theron's footsteps by bringing the titular battled-hardened, shaved-headed, metal-armed, stoic post-apocalyptic warrior to life as a young woman in the movie.
Contrary to the nature of the "Mad Max" universe, Miller himself is renowned for running safe sets and has never been accused of abusing his actors or otherwise mistreating the members of his crews. The...

Chris Hemsworth expressed frustration in an interview with The Times of London over Marvel criticisms made by some directors he considers to be personal heroes such as Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. Hemsworth is one of the original Avengers in the MCU as Thor, debuting in a 2011 standalone movie before headlining three sequels and starring in several “Avengers” movies through 2022.
“It felt harsh, and it bothers me, especially from heroes. It was an eye-roll for me, people bashing the superhero space,” Hemsworth told The Times. “Those guys had films that didn’t work too — we all have. When they talked about what was wrong with superheroes, I thought, cool, tell that to the billions who watch them. Were they all wrong?”
Scorsese made his initial Marvel criticisms in fall 2019, infamously calling these movies a “theme park” and not real cinema. The Oscar winner later clarified that his frustration was...

Expect George Miller’s upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, Furiosa, to be heavy on action and short on dialogue as Anya Taylor-Joy’s eponymous character only speaks 30 lines of dialogue over the course of the film’s two-and-a-half hours.
In an interview with The Telegraph, the director cited inspiration from the “pure cinema” of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin’s silent comedy, which “Hitchcock defined as movies where they don’t have to read the subtitles when they’re screened in Japan.”
Miller then explained his belief that dialogue “tends to slow things down, and film is a medium that’s often best enjoyed at high speed.” As a result, Furiosa barrels ahead with car chases across the Australian Outback, with one 15-minute sequence taking 78 days and 200 stunt performers to shoot.
Taylor-Joy recently spoke to Total Film about that particular setpiece, telling the magazine it was pivotal in unlocking her character.

Charlize Theron is known for her intense dedication, which is well reflected in her projects. Being a familiar face in the action genre, she has impressed audiences with her action projects like Mad Max: Fury Road where she portrayed Imperator Furiosa, a fierce warrior who rebels against ruler Immortan Joe to rescue a group of women he has enslaved.

The behind-the-scenes drama of “Mad Max: Fury Road” is legendary, at this point. There have been so many interviews about how Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy were very contentious. Stories about how difficult it can be to work with George Miller, as he is a bit of a perfectionist. On and on and on again. And judging by a new interview with Anya Taylor-Joy, the star of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” the production of the newest entry in the franchise was still incredibly difficult.

With his “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel movie “Furiosa” gearing up for both its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and its theatrical release later this month, director George Miller recently spoke to The Telegraph and reflected on the notorious feud that broke out between stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron during the grueling “Fury Road” production. Miller said at the center of the feud was the simple fact that “they were just two very different performers.”
“Tom has a damage to him but also a brilliance that comes with it, and whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer,” Miller said, more or less confirming reports that Hardy’s tardiness drew a wedge between him and his co-star. “Whereas Charlize was incredibly disciplined – a dancer by training, which told in the precision of her performance – and always the first one on set.

George Miller has been the mastermind of the Mad Max franchise, dating back to the first film in 1979. The franchise has evolved in terms of his look and visual style in presenting a post-apocalyptic/dystopian desert wasteland where people and factions fight for resources. The director created history with 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road nabbing 6 Oscars.

Miller had already created a complete script for an original story for Imperator Furiosa which Charlize Theron played in Fury Road before shooting the film. After shooting Fury Road, the director planned to turn the origin story into an anime. However, those plans fell apart, but one of its concept arts from the script made its way into the upcoming Furiosa film starring Anya Taylor-Joy.

The Mad Max movies are always a crazy fiasco of action, adventure, and chaos against a backdrop of a post-apocalyptic desert wasteland. Known for their horrendous and exhaustive shoot, the movies are not easy to film and the characters are definitely not easy to portray. And it was something that Anya Taylor-Joy learned the hard way when she figured out everything she was expecting to be easy was hard.

After years of commitment towards Marvel and establishing himself as an action figure in Hollywood, Chris Hemsworth was delighted to land the role of warlord Dementus in George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The new role made him realize that he has spent a long time feeling he was “stuck”. But that didn’t stop him from defending his superhero movies from criticism.

The wasteland can be a brutal place. Diegetically within the world of George Miller’s “Mad Max” film series and physically for the actors who have to inhabit it. Speaking with Variety for an interview on her upcoming role in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” star of the much-hyped prequel Anya Taylor-Joy discussed the challenges of taking on this role and how leaning into it was the only way through it.
“I had the earliest call time of my life: 1:45 a.m.,” Taylor-Joy said. “I’d be like, ‘I just wrapped! What do you mean?! It’s a mistake!’”
Part of that early call time involved Taylor-Joy getting into makeup, a process that required she be covered head-to-toe in the sand and sweat of Miller’s world.

“Valar Morghulis”, “Say my name”, and “Zed’s dead baby”, all these dialogues make you think of the particular film or series that they are from. In this case, it was Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and, Pulp Fiction respectively. The point is, that dialogues are memorable. Be it a one-liner or even some random nonsense (like Samuel L. Jackson’s “This is some serious gourmet sh*t” from Pulp Fiction), dialogues are important.
A great example of a powerful dialogue from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice “Tell me, do you bleed?”
On the contrary, directors like Denis Villeneuve and George Miller seem to state that dialogues only seem to slow the pacing of a movie. Well, they are right but not in a context that people understand. With great dialogues, the films are often slow and they take time to build these lines with character development. Movies like...

George Miller has revealed that Anya Taylor-Joy will have more to do than say in the upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The prequel film set 15 to 20 years before Mad Max: Fury Road is slated to feature Taylor-Joy as the younger version of the iconic character played by Charlize Theron in the 2015 film.
Despite many fans wondering how The Witch actress can do justice to the iconic character, a new update suggests that the upcoming feature may be an incredible addition to the Mad Max franchise.

According to the Mad Max filmmaker George Miller, the leading actress has only about 30 lines to say in the upcoming film, even less than what Tom Hardy spoke in his 2015 film. Although such a decision made by any other director could have enraged the fans, Miller’s statement suggests that this can make the upcoming prequel better.

While Thor: Love and Thunder was critically maligned, it was still a box office success for Marvel Studios, earning $761M worldwide from a production budget of $250M.
After helming two Thor films in a row, director Taika Waititi has indicated that he's likely done with the franchise, opening the door for another director to step in, if Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige want to make another standalone Thor film.
As such, George Miller was recently asked whether he would consider reuniting with Chris Hemsworth on Thor 5, after directing the Australian actor in the upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
Somewhat surprisingly, Miller stated that he'd consider it.

“Mad Max” superfan and creator of the “Metal Gear” and “Death Stranding” video game series Hideo Kojima has seen the new film “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and his reaction does not disappoint. Posting to X, formerly known as Twitter, Kojima released pictures of himself from the theater — his eyes misty from the experience.
“Witnessed ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga!’ Kojima said in his post. “This movie, which easily surpasses ‘Mad’ and even past ‘Fury’, is at its ‘Max’ (masterpiece)! Ever since I saw the first film when I was 16 years old, George Miller has saved me, encouraged me, and changed my way of life countless times. He is my God, and the Saga that he tells is my Bible.”
This is not the first time Kojima has expressed his adulation for maestro George Miller. Back when they met in 2015, he said, “My games were made with a lot of genes inherited from George Miller.

It is often an agreement between veteran directors that the usage of CGI should be kept to a minimum when creating cinematic movies. Director George Miller who directed both Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and the 1982 film Mad Max 2 or The Road Warrior, seems to agree with these statements.
Relying mostly on stunt people and real explosions for his movies, Miller is known for the iconic Mad Max franchise. In an interview, the director revealed that if the 1980s had the technology of today, his stuntmen and women would have been much safer.

It is no secret that veteran director George Miller and veteran actor Mel Gibson started with humble beginnings during the production of Mad Max. Originally released in 1979, the film received critical success and soon, a sequel was announced.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is a more typical summer movie season-starter than last week’s disappointing “The Fall Guy” (Universal). It’s a franchise film and it’s from Disney (which usually starts things off with a Marvel film).
It’s expected to open to over $50 million this weekend and become the first to gross over $100 million domestic. Industry sources suggest that over the summer, at least eight other releases (extending to early September) will reach this mark. A week ago, that guess would gave been 10.
The same sources pegged “The Fall Guy” as likely to gross over $125 million in the U.S./Canada. This weekend will clarify its fate, but the current trajectory suggests around $80 million. That’s a disappointment for theaters as well as Universal, which spent around $140 million to make the film before marketing.
“Apes” is one of several titles now projected in the $125-$150 million range.

George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa is revving its engine and heading into theaters on May 24, and you probably won’t be surprised to hear that The Asylum has got their own “mockbuster” take on the movie ready to go. The title? Road Wars: Max Fury.
What’s particularly interesting about Road Wars: Max Fury is that Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior star Vernon Wells stars in the film, a rare case where an actor from an original movie appears in the “mockbuster” take on that franchise. Watch the trailer down below.
Road Wars: Max Fury will be available digitally on May 10, 2024.
Here’s the synopsis: “In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, two sisters leave their stronghold to save their wounded mother. Armed only with a muscle car and limited ammo, they race against time and ruthless raiders to secure life-saving supplies from a distant outpost.”

What to expect from Cannes 2024? The global selection offers critics plenty to write about — after all, this is the festival d’auteurs. But this year’s edition may be light on the red carpet glitz that lures celebrities to the Côte d’Azur for eye-popping photo memes and offshore yacht revels. Remember Madonna’s 1991 pointy Gaultier bustier? Elizabeth Taylor holding her white dog as “Cliffhanger” star Sylvester Stallone climbed the steps to meet her at the top? Such viral moments are what Cannes director Thierry Fremaux dreams of.
High-octane stars expected to hit the Palais photo gauntlet include two-time Oscar-winner Emma Stone, who stars in all three stories in competition title “Kinds of Kindness” (Searchlight), Yorgos Lanthimos’ edgy follow-up to $100-million grosser “Poor Things.” Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth will add some sizzle for out-of-competition prequel “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (Warner Bros.), George Miller’s rollercoaster return after 2015’s Oscar-winning “Mad Max: Fury Road.

It is a well-known fact that George Miller is one of Australia’s best directors and filmmakers. The visionary filmmaker gave us the Mad Max franchise, which starred Mel Gibson in the titular role; he was later replaced by Tom Hardy in Fury Road, a movie that also introduced the character of Furiosa, initially played by Charlize Theron. This year, a spin-off from the main series, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, will be released as the most recent installment in the saga. The movie will premiere on May 23, 2024 in theaters around the world and will focus on the background story of the character of Imperator Furiosa. Now, just two weeks ahead of the premiere, a final trailer has been released, hyping us up for the upcoming movie!

It is fair to say that in its later years, George Miller‘s Mad Max franchise truly has become a saga. The term is used now boldly and often in the marketing for Furiosa, a film which marks the 79-year-old filmmaker’s fifth sojourn into the glories and horrors of the Wasteland. Yet what once was a series of standalone adventures in the life of Max Rockatansky and his post-apocalyptic travails has become something altogether grander thanks to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. For it was in this film that Miller introduced viewers to a new and instantly iconic protagonist, the Master of the War Rig and Scourge of the Citadel, Imperator Furiosa (played unforgettably by Charlize Theron).
By the end of the movie, it was Furiosa’s triumph that stuck with viewers as she ascended to the Citadel’s throne of power, promising a new and hopefully fairer matriarchal...

Imperator Furiosa is, in my humble opinion, one of the most important characters to hit the big screen in the last 20 years. She represents a justified rage often denied to women in post-apocalyptic films, a physical capability typically reserved for men who have been shaved down from slabs of meat on a GyroKone, and serves as a protector of the five wives — a woman looking after other women who are treated as little more than a form of currency. When "Mad Max: Fury Road" director George Miller expressed a desire to make a standalone epic prequel focusing on Furiosa, fans were thrilled at the prospect. Charlize Theron beautifully brought Furiosa to life, so it was only natural that she'd be brought back for the film.
During a special screening of "Furiosa" and a press event with Miller at IMAX Headquarters, he explained that replacing Theron was a matter of logistics.

Anya Taylor-Joy is set to play the younger version of the taciturn metal-armed warrior Imperator Furiosa, earlier played by Charlize Theron, in the upcoming film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Director George Miller picked Taylor-Joy after an audition where she nailed her performance of a portion of the 1976 film Network. She believed that Miller cast her in the role due to the one quality that she portrayed in her versatile roles.

Some actors wait for years to feel like they’ve truly made it in Tinseltown. But for Nicholas Hoult, all it took was a little spit on his face from the Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron.
Indeed, Hoult may have just become a real actor in Theron’s eyes after she “spat” on his face during a scene in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) but the film continues to be a gift that keeps on giving nine years later. The post-apocalyptic action epic helmed by George Miller has consolidated its place in pop culture with its prequel flick (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), set for release later this month.

George Miller is about to return to the wasteland with "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," but it might surprise some people to know that his biggest box office hit to date remains the technological marvel that is "Happy Feet."
Though you wouldn't think of "Happy Feet" as being connected to "Mad Max: Fury Road," they have some things in common — particularly their stunning visuals and how they approach VFX. Despite what some fans would like to believe, "Fury Road" is full of CGI. As Miller himself told Vulture in 2022, "There was not one shot in that movie that wasn't CGI in one way or another." The film works because it blends digital and practical effects, using CGI to enhance scenes, delete wirework, and otherwise make what is already real feel larger-than-life. This is the approach that the best movies take -- the ones that understand CGI is a tool and not a shortcut.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes releases in theatres on May 10th, 2024.
The reboot from the past decade of the massive Planet of the Apes franchise is often mentioned in debates about the best trilogies of the century, and personally, I couldn’t agree more. Although Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes doesn’t quite reach the same level as Matt Reeves’ Dawn and War (The Batman), the trilogy’s overarching story has the ideal narrative, thematic, and entertainment ingredients for an undeniable success, alongside the truly impressive use of motion-capture technology.
With Wes Ball (The Maze Runner) at the helm and a script by Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), expectations couldn’t be higher for one of the most anticipated films of the year, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Australian director George Miller made his first feature film, "Mad Max," in 1979. It was a very low-budget affair costing about $200,000. The film takes place in the near future when the Earth is running low on oil and civilization is just beginning to crumble. "Mad" Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) is a road cop tasked with reigning in the chaos. "Mad Max" was decidedly low-fi, but it struck a chord with audiences, ultimately earning almost $100 million worldwide. It remains one of the most profitable movies of all time, comparable only to "The Blair Witch Project," "Paranormal Activity," and "Deep Throat." Miller would go on to make several sequels to "Mad Max" in 1981, 1985, and 2015. The fifth film in the series, "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," is hitting theaters this month, with a potential sixth entry, "Mad Max: The Wasteland," in the early planning stages.

"Where are you going? So full of hope? There is no hope!!" It's time! Get your tickets now! Warner Bros has launched a third official trailer for Furiosa, George Miller's highly anticipated follow-up to the sensational action classic Mad Max: Fury Road (from 2015). It opens in theaters in just a few more weeks at the end of May. This action prequel tells the origin story of the renegade warrior Furiosa before she teamed up with Mad Max. It was shot again in Australia in 2022 and is finally read to blow the lid off the summer movie season this year. Anya Taylor-Joy stars as a younger Imperator Furiosa, the same Furiosa in the action classic Mad Max: Fury Road (played by Charlize Theron). It also stars Chris Hemsworth as Dementus, Tom Burke, Nathan Jones, Angus Sampson, Quaden Bayles, Daniel Webber, and Lachy Hulme, plus Alyla Browne as the young Furiosa character.

Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth are ready to “make it epic” when Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga barrels into cinemas on May 24, 2024! As tickets for the full-throttle prequel become available for pre-order, the final Furiosa trailer explodes onto screens with action, drama, and one particular shot that now makes me curious about an element of the film. I’m talking about the shot of the CGI-enhanced War Boy.
My knee-jerk reaction to the CGI-enhanced War Boy is one of apprehension. How large of a role does this character play in the film, and will their cartoonishness offset an otherwise incredible-looking film? I hope not. One of the more thrilling elements of Miller’s Mad Max series is the visual spectacle, and I worry the CGI-enhanced War Boy could be an “arrow to the knee.” I could be entirely off base, and I’m simply being paranoid for no good reason.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga director George Miller recently confirmed that the upcoming prequel will feature a surprise appearance from Max Rockatansky. Except now, what could have been one of the movie's biggest talking points is no longer a surprise!
We first met the character in 1979's Mad Max where he was played by Mel Gibson. The actor went on to reprise the role in Mad Max 2 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, with Tom Hardy taking over in 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road.
During a recent screening, Miller announced that Jacob Tomuri (who we've included a photo of below) will play Max in Furiosa.
"It was Jacob Tomuri, who was Tom Hardy's double [in Fury Road]," Miller told attendees (via SFFGazette.com). "He also did some other stunts. He's a New Zealand stuntman, and he was doing some other stunts on the film, and I thought, 'Who better?'"
We'd assume this...

George Miller is the master of the modern myth. His sprawling "Mad Max" franchise now includes five feature films, novelizations, a comic book series, and two video games — all helping expand a post-apocalyptic Wasteland loaded with lore, characters, and laws different from our own. "Furiosa" serves as a prequel to "Fury Road," but a continuation of the story started in the first "Mad Max" film from 1979. As an audience, we know where Imperator Furiosa's story ends up, but "Furiosa" will show us how she got there.
One of the hardest things about making a prequel is ensuring that there are still stakes to the story at hand, knowing that what comes after has already been established. Sometimes it works, like with "The Hunger Games: The Battle of Songbirds & Snakes," but more often than not, the delivery is more akin to "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas," "Dumb and Dumberer," or depending on who you ask,...
