Primavera Sound Barcelona has long been renowned for brilliant lineups in an idyllic setting, the setting flanked by the Mediterranean Sea with the Spanish city as its backdrop. This year’s iteration was no exception, drawing an estimated 193,000 people from around the world to witness an eclectic mix of artists that included Lana Del Rey, Sza, Pulp, Troye Sivan, and Pj Harvey.
But Primavera’s appeal goes beyond the music. It serves as a reminder of what drew fans to festivals for decades prior: bonding over music, feeling a sense of community,...

The prequel film we have all been waiting for is finally here and I am really happy to say that it is as brilliant and bombastic as the original film. Obviously, we are talking about Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the prequel to George Miller‘s 2015 Mad Max: Fury Road. Directed by Miller from a screenplay by Nico Lathouris and Miller, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga follows the story of a young Furiosa as she is taken from Green Place of Many Mothers and tries to survive in the wasteland while trying to get back home but the war between great biker horde’s warlord Dementus and Immortan Joe makes it harder. Replacing Charlize Theron from Fury Road, Anya Taylor-Joy takes over the role of Furiosa in the prequel film and it also stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Lachy Hulme, John Howard, Angus Sampson, and Nathan Jones. So,...

Madonna released songs across numerous genres, so it’s no wonder the Material Girl has worked with so many other superstars. Rock stars, big-name rappers, and indie music darlings all lined up to collaborate with the Queen of Pop. One of the most beloved rock stars of the 1990s even wrote a No. 1 single for Madonna.
1. ‘Beat Goes On’
With that title, fans might assume Sonny & Cher wrote Madonna’s “Beat Goes On,” but it was actually co-written by Madonna, Pharrell Williams, and Kanye West. Interestingly, Pharrell and Kanye wrote a disco song with Madonna rather than a hip-hop song. With star power like that, it’s surprising “Beat Goes On” was never a single.
In a way, “Beat Goes On” is a return to the Queen of Pop’s roots. She was one of the artists who kept disco alive when many had proudly proclaimed its death. Fascinatingly, the...

Over the past week or so, Apple Music has slowly unveiled the titles included in its list of the “100 best albums.” Today, the top 10 albums were revealed, with Miss Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill claiming the No. 1 spot. Rounding out the top five are Michael Jackson’s Thriller; The Beatles’ Abbey Road; Prince’s Purple Rain; and Frank Ocean’s Blonde.
The top 10 also includes Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life; Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city (Deluxe Version); Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black; Nirvana’s Nevermind; and Beyoncé’s Lemonade.
In all honestly, it’s a pretty safe top 10, especially considering the drama that unfolded when Apple unveiled picks 11-20 and slotted Adele’s 21 at No. 15 and Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) at No. 18 — ahead of albums like Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds,...

Above: 1980 Japanese poster for Apocalypse Now. Design by Eiko Ishioka, artwork by Haruo Takino. With Francis Ford Coppola’s long-gestated Megalopolis having premiered yesterday at Cannes, it's a good time to look back at the posters from his 60-year-long career. The only problem is that many posters for his films are either too well known or nothing to write home about. Like Coppola’s career itself, there are peaks and valleys—one of my very first posts for Notebook, almost exactly fifteen years ago, was about the gorgeous design for The Rain People (1969)—but a career retrospective of his posters seems like it might result in less than the sum of its parts. Yet of all his posters there are three rare Japanese designs that have always stood out as utterly extraordinary: two for Apocalypse Now (1979) and one for Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992).I’ve always seen these posters attributed to Eiko Ishioka,...

To quote Space Ghost himself, "I'll be dead long before you were born, and I'll be dead long before you'll be dead."
In 1994, producer Mike Lazzo donned a pith helmet, filled his arms with machetes, and trekked into the darkest corners of the bleak, terrifying Hanna-Barbera cartoon library. In the depths, he re-discovered a long-forgotten, one-season animated series from 1966 called "Space Ghost," a superhero show about a white-clad, cape-wearing starship captain who fought bud-like villains in the inky void of the cosmos. Space Ghost, voiced by Gary Owens, could pass through walls and oversaw a pair of sidekicks named Jan (Ginny Tyler) and Jace (Tim Matheson) as well as a chimp named Blip (Don Messick).
Like most of Hanna-Barbera's output, "Space Ghost" was strange and awful. 20 years later, reruns of shows like "Space Ghost" were increasingly enjoyed exclusively by college students under the influence of potent smokables. One would be...

Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer (below) for “The Day Iceland Stood Still,” ahead of the film’s world premiere at Hot Docs on April 29.
When Oct. 24, 1975 was declared as “Women’s Day Off” in Iceland, some 90% of the island’s women refused to work, cook or take care of the children. The country was brought to a standstill.
“The Day Iceland Stood Still,” directed by Emmy award-winning U.S. filmmaker Pamela Hogan in collaboration with Icelandic producer Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir, looks back at the event and speaks to Icelandic women about its significance. “We loved our male chauvinist pigs,” recalls one of the activists. “We just wanted to change them a little!”
The film features a rare interview with Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, the world’s first democratically-elected female head of state, who took office just five years after the strike, and current president Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, who tells...

Monkey Man is one of the most imaginative action films to come out sometimes and it comes from a first-time director who also stars in the lead role Dev Patel. Described as “Indian John Wick,” the action-thriller film follows the story of a young underground fighter who goes on a rampage against the city’s elite to avenge the injustices done by them to his mother and village. Monkey Man also stars Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, Adithi Kalkunte, Makarand Deshpande, Sharlto Copley, Brahim Achabbakhe, Ashwini Kalshekar, Pitobash Tripathy, and Vipin Sharma. Our newest Best Supporting Actress Oscar-winner, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, looks to have her next project in view. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the star of “The Holdovers” will join a new musical from director Michel Gondry and producer Pharrell Williams. The project is said to be based on Williams’s youth in Virginia Beach in the 1970s. (I hope we get to watch his very tall hat grow.) IMDb has the title of the film listed as “Atlantis,” but this is unconfirmed by THR.
The screenplay is written by Martin Hynes, whose previous writing credits include “Toy Story 4” and “Stealing Harvard” (and also playing George Lucas in the legendary short “George Lucas in Love”), and Steven Levenson, whose musical credits include “Dear Evan Hanson” and “tick, tick…Boom.” Kelvin Harrison Jr., recently seen in “Chevalier” and “Elvis” is believed to be starring, and IMDb lists Andre 3000, Mary J. Empress Of’s For Your Consideration is a celebration of Lorely Rodriguez’s voice as both an artist and vocalist. Where a similar artist might use synth pads as musical accompaniment, Rodriguez inserts the hum of her own voice. On the title track of her fourth studio album, the Honduran-American singer rearranges her breathing into a shuffling rhythm, while “Femenine” samples her vocals to serve various functions, including as percussion.
For Your Consideration can’t be classified as hyperpop per se, but the album’s sonic manipulations and their queer implications owe something to the subgenre. “Femenine”—the title of which subverts the Spanish language’s binary gender system, ending with an ambiguous “e” instead of a masculine “o” or feminine “a”—is about a woman’s desire to dominate a man. The song’s angular melody is pitched down, often mid-syllable, to emulate a masculine voice before Rodriguez responds in her natural tone.

Few people better capture the sublimity and silliness of today’s red carpet spectacle than the artist Angelica Hicks.
The 31-year-old Brooklyn-based Brit started her career as a cheeky illustrator, making a name for herself with fashion drawings that featured winking wordplay, like a model wearing Ysl logo earrings with the caption “Yves Dropping.” (Get it?)
But one day, on a whim, she took to Instagram to replicate a runway look she saw by cutting a hole in a shopping bag and wearing it as a squared-off top. Her ingenuity garnered enthusiastic online praise, so she continued, duplicating a model in a ruffled blouse and cloche hat using crumpled tissues and a mixing bowl. “The humor is in approximating the look as closely as possible,” Hick says. “So it’s this perfectionism mixed with the absurd and a little English deadpan.”
Just a few years later, Hicks now has a...

Björk fans have reason to rejoice, as WeTransfer announced today an exhibition titled The Day I Met Björk of unseen photographs of Björk, photographed by Spike Jonze and curated by Humberto Leon.
Scheduled to open on February 15 at Leon’s Los Angeles establishment, Arroz & Fun, the exhibition reveals more than 25 never-before-seen photographs captured during the summer of 1995 at the Chateau Marmont. These images offer a glimpse into the days leading up to the filming of the iconic music video “It’s Oh So Quiet.”
Of the thousands of photos taken that day, only six were published. Leon discovered the outtakes, which have long been treasured by Björk fans while helping Spike organize his archive.

Beginner’s guide to the wrap-your-brain-around-them facts of mycological science boosts the wonder with 3D time-lapse photography
If you’ve got “face of fungi” biologist Merlin Sheldrake’s global bestseller Entangled Life on your bookshelf, unbattered and spine uncracked, this documentary might feel like an easier option. A beginner’s guide to fungi, just 40 minutes long, it is narrated by Björk and presented by the gently eccentric Sheldrake. It’s being released in 3D on the giant screen at London’s BFI Imax – all the better to gawp at Steve Axford’s trippy time-lapse photography of strange, wondrous and beautiful fungi.
Like Sheldrake’s book, the film is on a mission to change the way we look at fungi – and the world. Fungi made life possible on Earth, and virtually all trees – and 90% of plants – rely on fungus to survive. The vast underground networks of fungi that provide trees with...

We don’t always cover celebrities’ love lives, but when we do, it often comes from a place of bewilderment: Rosalía is definitely dating Jeremy Allen White, US Weekly reports.

While it looks like the two have yet to be spotted kissing out in public, they have definitely been hanging out, apparently taking trips to the farmer’s market and doing other things that rich hot people do in Los Angeles.
And at the risk of further pushing the celebrity gossip agenda, it is worth noting that both White and Rosalía have both recently endured what we can only assume have been gnarly breakups; White’s wife of three years filed for divorce in May, and just a couple of months later,...

Fresh off the strike and newly back to work, American writer-director Dee Rees has set her sights on her next feature – a stylized dark comedy meant to visualize a central character’s frantic stream of consciousness.
“It’s a weird, experimental thing,” says Rees, who’s currently serving on the jury of this year’s Marrakech Film Festival. “[I’ve explored] comedic elements in my films, but this is the first time where it’s a kind of a dark, sad satire.”
While the “Pariah” and “Mudbound” filmmaker had toyed with this latest project for years, she picked up her pen anew once the writers strike concluded and then committed full-on following an opportune encounter in Marrakech.
“People will come to you with what they think you should do, or what they think you’d be good at,” she tells Variety. “So I try to still listen to that kind of voice. I...

Björk has officially released “oral,” her new collaboration with Rosalía. The profits from the track, which was produced by Sega Bodega, will all go towards fighting excessive fish farming in the singer’s home country of Iceland.
In an Instagram post, Björk shared that the she initially wrote and recorded the vocal track for “oral” about 25 years ago, when she was just around the same age that Rosalía is now. Taking its cues from dancehall music, Björk added that the Catalan pop star’s “experiments with the genre and her incredible voice made her an obvious guest for the song” over two decades later. (Lest we forget Rosalía also replicated Björk’s iconic swan dress for Halloween just weeks ago.)
“Industrial salmon farming in open net pens is horrid for the environment,” Björk continued in the post. “The farmed salmon goes through immense suffering, and it causes severe harm for our planet.

Sometime in the late Nineties, Björk wrote and recorded “Oral,” a song that she thought was too poppy for release on albums like Homogenic or Vespertine. Then she forgot about it. She recently rediscovered it in her archives and turned it into a duet with Rosalía, in which the two women sing about falling in love with a man and not knowing how to express it. “Can I just sneak up from behind to the back of his head,” goes one lyric, “then I’ll lift up his hair and nibble ever so lightly.

La motomami is here! Rosalía opened the Latin Grammys‘ first-ever ceremony in Spain with an orchestra-backed performance of Spanish legend Rocío Jurado’s “Se Nos Rompió el Amor.”

With professional baggage that includes music video work for the likes of Björk, Panda Bear, Dirty Projectors and Grizzly Bear, Isaiah Saxon has been painstakingly putting together The Legend of Ochi since October of 2021. Among the Sundance Institute Screenwriters Labs attendees back in 2018, due to the complex work involved in post, it’ll have been a long journey to completion for Saxon’s feature debut — animation takes time folks! Starring Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, Finn Wolfhard and Helena Zengel, some scenes The Legend of Ochi were shot in Transylvania and other magical backdrops. Cinematographer Evan Prosofsky (who has worked on Sam Kuhn’s shorts films) was hired here.…...

As the singer of Slipknot and Stone Sour, as well as solo artist, Corey Taylor has rubbed shoulders with many of his own personal heroes in the business. But his encounters with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and late Motörhead legend Lemmy Kilmister are among the most memorable.
In a new interview with Classic Rock magazine, the Slipknot frontman fanboy’d out on some of the famous rockstars he’s met over the years, most of which entail humorous — and in Lemmy’s case, downright raunchy — anecdotes.
Taylor had only met the Motörhead mastermind in passing prior to running into him in the kitchenette at the German headquarters of guitar company Gibson. As Taylor recounted, while the two were “smoking out of the window like high-schoolers, just being dicks,” Lemmy proceeded to tell what Taylor claims to be “one of the filthiest jokes” he’s ever heard in his life.

Björk feels furious when she thinks about the thousands of what she calls “Frankenstein fish” swimming through Iceland’s rivers in the past year.
Like a scene from Piranha, the foreign fish — industrially farmed salmon that companies bred in open-net pens — escaped enclosures in Iceland’s western fjords and entered the country’s rivers at various points in the past few months. These invaders threaten the country’s natural salmon population if they breed since they can carry pesticides and organic waste with them. The number of wild Atlantic salmon...

"We're burning the library... A library of different ways to rise to the challenge of living." What a chilling statement. There's an IMAX movie playing in theaters this year called Fungi: Web of Life, or Fungi: The Web of Life. We're just catching up with this now even though it has already been showing at IMAX theaters everywhere. Much of life on Earth is connected by a vast, hidden network that we are only just beginning to understand. Out of sight, between the world of plants and animals, another world exists -- the kingdom of fungi. From the ancient Tasmanian Tarkine Rainforest to the mystical wilds of China's Yunnan Province, come search for solutions to some of our planet's biggest challenges. Narrated by Björk, who "speaks the story with inimitable magic and sensitivity." This isn't the only doc on fungi - there have been a few others recently including Fantastic Fungi...

Speaking at a panel held at the Mia Market in Rome, Netflix execs laid out a European strategy based on cultural and regional specificity alongside wider international format exchange.
“We want to create stories that are really rooted in our country’s culture and tradition,” said Italian content VP Eleonora Andreatta. “[And in order] to be authentic, that means recognizing the differences between one part of the country to the other.”
While Netflix’s recently wrapped adaptation of “The Leopard” is steeped in Sicilian history, the Matilda De Angelis-led returning series “The Law According to Lidia Poët” finds female emancipation in 19th century Turin. And if both titles look backward, both also share an impetus to shade Italian history in a more modern light.
Per Andreatta, Italian cinema’s glorious dolce vita boom had also left a bitter aftertaste by way of cultural stereotypes that lingered for years. Andreatta and her Rome-based...

The Haxan Cloak is back. Listen to “N/Y,” Bobby Krlic’s first song under the moniker since 2013, below.
“‘N/Y’ is a feeling I’ve had for a really long time,” The Haxan Cloak shared in a statement. “It was made with the intention of being something that I could play live only, and was just this burst of intensity that could re-contextualize anywhere I would play it in. I kept working on it and it became something that I wanted to hear regardless of the context.”
Krlic also directed the single’s music video, which he said he made “in the same way. Making charcoal drawings and oil paintings, then fusing these together with self-shot video of myself in my studio. It feels immediate and without compromise. It was made quickly, in a moment, with complete intention. I really hope it changes the space you’re in.”

Björk has teamed up with Rosalía for a new song. Currently only available on YouTube under the title “help fight fish farming in iceland,” its proceeds will go to the legal fees of protestors against the fish farm at the Fjord Seyðisfjörður in Iceland. Stream it below.
The track, barely over one minute long, features Björk and Rosalía repeatedly singing, “Is that the right thing to do? I just don’t know.” It’s currently unclear whether the YouTube upload is the full song or whether the whole thing will be released later this month.

As someone with an insect phobia, exploring the world—or more accurately, worlds—of Cocoon began as one of the most subtly unsettling experiences I’ve seen out of games in some time. It’s a place equal parts reminiscent of the Shimmer from Alex Garland’s adaptation of Annihilation and the organic lifeforms that sprout in any number of Björk music videos. Throughout, you’re harnessing the building blocks that make up the natural world, though here they’ve been warped into something vaguely familiar yet demonstrably alien. This is the world within worlds that Cocoon’s player character, a cicada-like creature, is birthed into.
Over the course of Cocoon’s short play time, you wander those worlds solving puzzles, pushing forward as you unravel the mysteries that are laced into the landscapes. In the process you find out just how quickly one can adapt to any environment. That...

In This Moment have unveiled the latest single from their upcoming album, Godmode, and it’s a cover of the Björk classic “Army of Me.”
While In This Moment’s version of the song maintains the tempo of the original, the band adds a metal element to the song, with heavy guitars and singer Maria Brink’s background screams complementing her melodic main vocal track.
Björk’s original version appeared on her acclaimed 1995 album Post, making a lasting impact on Brink. “I was a teenager when I first got into Björk,” stated the In This Moment vocalist. “I was mesmerized by her. She has a really inspiring energy to a lot of her stuff, an enlightening feeling. She’s just so innovative and groundbreaking and inspiring and magical.”
Guitarist Chris Howorth added, “Maria played me three different Björk songs to see which I thought would be the best. This was the one.

I honestly never expected Steven Spielberg in a Criterion Channel series––certainly not one that pairs him with Kogonada, anime, and Johnny Mnemonic––but so’s the power of artificial intelligence. Perhaps his greatest film (at this point I don’t need to tell you the title) plays with After Yang, Ghost in the Shell, and pre-Matrix Keanu in July’s aptly titled “AI” boasting also Spike Jonze’s Her, Carpenter’s Dark Star, and Computer Chess. Much more analog is a British Noir collection obviously carrying the likes of Odd Man Out, Night and the City, and The Small Back Room, further filled by Joseph Losey’s Time Without Pity and Basil Dearden’s It Always Rains on Sunday. (No two ways about it: these movies have great titles.) An Elvis retrospective brings six features, and the consensus best (Don Siegel’s Flaming Star) comes September 1.

If you’ve ever wondered when it was that Michel Gondry, the gifted French director of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” became the world’s most annoying filmmaker, you might say the answer is, “He always was.” Yet no one, including me, quite thinks of him that way. That’s because the few works of his that have come to prominence possess a special combination of facility and charm. I adore “Eternal Sunshine,” a virtuoso movie that bends your brain and breaks your heart at the same time. You might simply choose to characterize it as the masterpiece of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, but the truth is that Gondry directed it — the leaps in time, the emotionally convulsive performances of Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet — with a masterful sense of play and gravitational control.

Considering the guy once hosted a super-spreader party at which he played the music of a well-documented racist, we don’t exactly count on Diplo for the most refined takes in music. Even so, his latest is a bit of a head-scratcher: He told The Hollywood Reporter that he’s unimpressed with Coachella, in part because he thinks the massive festival “might be having a hard time booking headliners.”
As a refresher, Frank Ocean, Blackpink, and Bad Bunny headlined the first weekend of Coachella 2023; after the former suffered an injury on festival grounds, the recently-reunited Blink-182 replaced him for Weekend 2. Forget the fact that this year marked the first time a Latin or Korean artist has ever headlined in the festival’s history — Diplo misses the white men!
“I think [Coachella] honestly might be having a hard time booking headliners,” Diplo — who added that he’s “not a huge fan” of Frank Ocean — told THR.

Frank Ocean will not perform during the second weekend of Coachella after injuring his leg.
“After suffering an injury to his leg on festival grounds in the week leading up to weekend 1, Frank Ocean was unable to perform the intended show but was still intent on performing, and in 72 hours, the show was reworked out of necessity,” a representative for the singer said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday. “On doctor’s advice, Frank is not able to perform weekend 2 due to two fractures and a sprain in his left leg.”
Ocean’s performance at the festival days ago was delayed by an hour and cut short, leaving fans angry and confused. Attendees posted videos on social media detailing the drama, with some even leaving the festival early after waiting hours to see Ocean perform and after watching others hit the stage including Björk, Kali Uchis, Latto and Willow.

Coachella 2023's first weekend in Indio, CA, is in the books with so many unforgettable moments. So far, this year's event, which has 150 acts billed over two weekends, has welcomed plenty of big name artists to the main stage - including headliners Bad Bunny, Blackpink, and Frank Ocean. Meanwhile, other acts like Latto, GloRilla, Kali Uchis, Björk, Rae Sremmurd, Dominic Fike, and many more have entertained festivalgoers on Coachella's wide array of stages. Not to mention, surprise guests like The Weeknd - who debuted a new song during Metro Boomin's set on April 14, per Billboard - and Tyler, the Creator popped up during weekend one to treat fans to some extra special performances.
With so many performers descending on the desert locale, it's impossible to see them all. But lucky for music fans, Coachella has streamed many of its acts live this year via YouTube. Whether you're digging the festival's...

Björk offered a career-spanning performance to the crowd at Coachella 2023 with support from the Hollywood String Ensemble in a unique reprisal of her recently-concluded “Orkestral” concerts. To make the appearance extra special, she used more than 800 drones to create a light show above the stage.

The first day of Coachella was jam-packed with major artists making moves, while the second day seemed to revolve around pure pop. Sunday, day three, featured the weekend’s most eclectic lineup, with all kinds of genres represented on every stage.
