Bringing together a legendary ensemble to translate Mario Puzo’s glorious novel to life was no cakewalk; being a part of the iconic star cast of The Godfather was perhaps even more complicated a feat to achieve. But even out of those who did get to work in Francis Ford Coppola’s crime classic, not everyone felt exhilarated about the opportunity.

In fact, there was one star who felt anything but elated for the most endearing reason, though.
The Rocky Star Who Didn’t Wish to Be Cast in The Godfather
If Talia Shire could go back in time and extricate herself from the colossal blockbuster that her brother helmed, she probably would.
Shire, 78, who happens to be Francis Ford Coppola’s younger sister, was cast as Connie Corleone – the tenacious and only daughter of the formidable patriarch of the Corleone family.

Albert S. Ruddy, who earned two Best Picture Oscars for producing The Godfather and Million Dollar Baby and co-created TV shows including Walker, Texas Ranger and Hogan’s Heroes, died May 25 at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center after a brief illness, a family spokesman said. He was 94.
Ruddy is one of nine producers ever to earn two or more Best Picture Oscars, and has the distinction of winning them with the largest interval in between — 32 years.
He recently was portrayed by Miles Teller in the Paramount+ miniseries The Offer, which chronicles Ruddy’s experience making the 1972 film that Coppola directed and adapted with Mario Puzo from the latter’s bestselling novel.

The Rocky movies are pretty synonymous with cinema. You’ve got every kind of movie you could want, the intimate Academy Award-winning underdog original and its closely knit sequel, the fun and cheesy spectacles of Rocky III and Rocky IV, the misguided attempt to recapture its roots with Rocky V, and the old war horse, broken down, one-last-fight inspiration of Rocky Balboa. The story behind the first movie is as engaging as the movie itself, which is why it will be the subject of a new movie from Peter Farrelly called I Play Rocky.
Blu-ray.com has unveiled that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will now be releasing the Rocky series, sans Creed spin-offs, with the new 4K Ultra HD Rocky: Ultimate Knockout Collection. The set will encompass all versions of the commercially released films in Uhd, which includes both the theatrical version of Rocky IV and the recut Rocky Vs.

When it was released in January of 2001, Richard Kelly's bleak time-travel psychological drama "Donnie Darko" caused a notable stir. The title character, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, is a teen struggling with schizophrenia in 1988, a time when Reagan's great Conservative revolution was drawing to a close and adults clung to suburban conformity as it crumbled under them. Donnie is obsessed with time-travel and regularly hallucinates a vicious, strange anthropomorphic rabbit monster named Frank (all while attempting to socialize at school and foster a romance with a classmate played by Jena Malone). Patrick Swayze appears as a cheesy self-self guru, Drew Barrymore plays one of Donnie's teachers, and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays Donnie's sister.
By turns psychedelic and weirdly moving (in a Goth sort of way), "Donnie Darko" quickly became a cult hit and rotated directly into the local midnight movie circuit, attracting a wide swath of misfits and night people.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about the narrative of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis.
Exclusive: One of the many talking points to emerge from this week’s Cannes Film Festival screening of Francis Ford Coppola’s epic Megalopolis is whether distributors will be able to replicate the film’s ‘fourth wall moment’.
As most reviews for the film detail, at a certain point in Wednesday’s world premiere a performer walked onto the stage in front of the cinema screen and engaged with Adam Driver’s character in a device known as “breaking the fourth wall.”
Is it plausible that distributors would replicate such a moment in every screening? Unlikely. But at least one will give it a good shot.
Jean Labadie, who runs the film’s French distributor Le Pacte, told Deadline: “We certainly will do a lot of such performances. With four screenings a day in many...

If you dove head first into Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, you would get a concussion. The filmmaker’s supposed opus––a glitzy, gargantuan, long-gestating project that he conceived of in the late ‘70s, attempted to make more than once in the ‘80s, rewrote countless times over the last four decades, and eventually self-financed for $120 million due to lack of external support––has had cinephiles like myself drooling over its scope and potential for years. Alas, there is no deep end in this pool.
Don’t let that deter you though. Receive it with a healthy dose of doubt and let it reshape (and perhaps healthily lower) your expectations. Because, at the end of the day, for better and for worse, in awe and in tired confusion, Megalopolis is a garish wonder to behold.
Coppola recently said that “[his] first goal always is to make a film with all [his] heart,” and...

The premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” was every bit the sensation people were expecting—with some critics calling the self-financed neo-Roman civic engineering drama a masterpiece and others calling it a disorganized mess.
The 85-year-old auteur, one of the few to have won the Palme D’Or twice, was sure to bring the same level of chaotic energy to his post-screening press conference. He took shots at the studios and suggested the tech companies might permanently dethrone them,
The best was when a man with a European accent, citing the film’s hope for the future, asked the writer-director if he has fears about today’s political climate when “men like Donald Trump are in charge.”
Coppola cited the worldwide trend to “neo-right, even fascist traditions, which is frightening for anyone alive during the horrors of World War II.”
He concluded that it is up to artists to shine a light on that,...

Francis Ford Coppola's self-funded passion-project, Megalopolis, screened at the Cannes Film Festival last night, and the first reviews for the sci-fi epic have now been shared online.
Depending on which critics you choose to trust, the movie is either a masterpiece, an unmitigated disaster, or somewhere in between!
Despite reports of audiences giving the film a 10-minute standing ovation, reviews have been decidedly mixed, which is represented by an early Rotten Tomatoes score of 50%.
Only 22 verdicts have been added so far, so this score is sure to change when press screening take place down the line. But with such a polarizing reaction, we don't anticipate it fluctuating too much.
Have a read through some of the reviews at the links below.

On Friday afternoon, at the most anticipated press conference of the 77th Cannes Film Festival, legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola fielded questions about his latest work, Megalopolis, which had its world premiere at the fest in competition on Thursday night, deeply diving critics and audience members. The presser started more than half an hour late, a little unusual for Cannes, which unlike Hollywood events, generally run on time. But the filmmaker arrived in high spirits, stating that hearing applause at the premiere gave him feelings of “relief and joy.”
Coppola, 85, spent decades — and $120 million of his own money — trying to get the sci-fi epic across the finish line. The shoot was chaotic, THR reported in real time, with key creative talent quitting or being fired along the way; and this week The Guardian quoted sources from the set who suggested that Coppola made unwanted advances towards actresses.

Francis Ford Coppola shared his thoughts on the current studio system during the Cannes Film Festival press conference for his self-financed epic “Megalopolis,” saying that they might not be around much longer.
“I fear that the film industry has become more of a matter of people being hired to meet their debt obligations because the studios are in great, great debt. And the job is not so much to make good movies, the job is to make sure they pay their debt obligations,” Coppola said in response to a question from Variety. “Obviously, new companies like Amazon and Apple and Microsoft, they have plenty of money, so it might be that the studios we knew for so long, some wonderful ones, are not to be here in the future anymore.”
The presser also veered into the political, with Coppola being asked if the film is a commentary on Donald Trump,...

Is Francis Ford Coppola’s controversial magnum opus “Megalopolis” any good?
The two hour and 20 minute dystopian drama certainly divided the audience at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday night with its collision course of shocking scenes: a doctored sex tape featuring Adam Driver, Shia Labeouf in drag playing a Trumpian figure and Aubrey Plaza dominating her way through a slew of men.
But there was still a huge amount of respect for iconic director Coppola, who received a four-minute standing ovation upon entering the room. After the credits rolled — which included a tribute to his late wife Eleanor — and the standing ovation began, Coppola hugged Driver and Giancarlo Esposito and got emotional as he made a speech dedicating the film to hope and family.
“Thank you all so much. It is so impossible to find words to tell you how I feel,” Coppola said, then introducing his family members in the audience.

The most awaited film this year at the Cannes Film Festival, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, had its world premiere Thursday night, with the dystopian epic decades in the making landing a seven-minute standing ovation.
Coppola, the 85-year-old director and five-time Oscar winners, bowed as the lights came up inside the Grand Theatre Lumiere. He was congratulated by his Cotton Club star Richard Gere and got a hug from Cannes boss Thierry Fremaux as the ovation carried on.
Said Coppola to the crowd finally: “Thank you all so much — it is impossible to find words how I feel.” He then introduced those around him — including his granddaughter and son and collaborator Roman Coppola and sister Talia Shire. He called his cast “family” and emphasized the movie’s end message: “We should pledge allegiance to our families…that children should inherit a beautiful world from us.”

As audiences take their seats for Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis in Cannes, we have a big update on the status of the movie's theatrical release.
Despite speculation that the legendary Godfather director's self-funded passion project might struggle to find a distributor (there was already some concern before the recent controversies), it's just been announced that the sci-fi epic has been given a global IMAX release.
“The film is going to get an IMAX release,” IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond told the press during a Cannes event earlier today. “One of the things that we pride ourselves on is being filmmaker-friendly. So we’ve committed to Francis to do a global Imax release.”

Imax has committed screens around the world to show Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” the company’s CEO Richard Gelfond confirmed at a Cannes Film Festival event on Thursday.
The film’s trailer, which debuted on Tuesday, said that “Megalopolis” would be coming to Imax theaters this year — but it was not specified that the release would be global.
The run-up to the premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed epic at Cannes on Friday has been filled with anticipation and controversy, partly because “Megalopolis” has yet to secure a U.S. distributor — though a global release with Imax may help sweeten the pot. The film has found distribution in France and other international territories, including the U.K., Spain and Italy.

After 13 years, Francis Ford Coppola is back in the director’s seat with a new upcoming project entitled ‘Megalopolis’. The film is scheduled to premiere at Cannes Film Festival 2024 and will break the hiatus since ‘Twixt’, Coppola’s latest release in 2011. Francis Ford Coppola will finally unveil Megalopolis at the Cannes Film Festival next week, but a new report outlining the legendary filmmaker's on-set antics could make the already daunting task of finding a distributor for the film even more challenging.
We've heard some stories about behind-the-scenes turmoil during the production of the $120 million+ sci-fi epic, but it sounds like the shoot may have been even more chaotic than previous reports suggested.
Following the debut of yesterday's trailer, The Guardian published a piece detailing some of the (alleged) behaviour of the Apocalypse Now director.
Among other things, it's said that Coppola chose to sit in his trailer smoking weed for hours on end while the cast and crew were waiting to film. He has also been accused of pulling scantily clad or naked female extras onto his lap and attempting to kiss them to "get them in the mood."

Among other things, it's said that Coppola chose to sit in his trailer smoking weed for hours on end while the cast and crew were waiting to film. He has also been accused of pulling scantily clad or naked female extras onto his lap and attempting to kiss them to "get them in the mood."

Ever thought about what happens when a legendary director’s relentless pursuit of authenticity collides with cutting-edge technology and a stellar cast? In the newest film from The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola, Adam Driver portrays Caesar Catillina, an architect trying to rebuild New York into a science fiction city after it is destroyed.
A recent article by The Guardian described the dramatic behind-the-scenes action on the set of Coppola’s much-awaited flick, Megalopolis, including a riveting account of Driver’s first day on the set. It seems that the director’s disdain for digital effects led him to make some questionable choices when it came to creating certain visual effects for the film.
Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis
Digitally creating that particular effect would have been quick and easy, according to one of the crew members. Nevertheless, Coppola devoted “half of a day” to an activity that could have been completed in ten minutes.

Arguably, one of the most prominent filmmakers of our time, Francis Ford Coppola, shared an epic teaser trailer for his upcoming film “Megalopolis” which he described as his “best work” on Tuesday, May 14, ahead of its world premiere at the Cannes International Film Festival.
On the same day the teaser dropped on YouTube and stunned viewers, Guardian published an article that alleged that Coppola demonstrated inappropriate behavior around female extras while on his Megalopolis passion project set. Days before Francis Ford Coppola premieres his self-financed epic “Megalopolis” at the Cannes Film Fesstival, The Guardian has published a report on the film’s production in which several crew members detail Coppola’s alleged behavior on set. Several sources told the publication that Coppola was “old school” in his behavior toward women.
“He allegedly pulled women to sit on his lap, for example,” reads The Guardian report. “And during one bacchanalian nightclub scene being shot for the film, witnesses say, Coppola came on to the set and tried to kiss some of the topless and scantily clad female extras. He apparently claimed he was ‘trying to get them in the mood.'”
Defending Coppola is Darren Demetre, the executive co-producer on “Megalopolis.” He told the publication that Coppola did kiss some extras on the cheek in a friendly manner and no one ever expressed to him that Coppola’s behavior made them uncomfortable.

Oi, we’re back with Megalopolis again! Yeah, Coppola’s supposed masterpiece has been a hot topic in recent weeks as the famed director is trying to sell his sci-fi epic to buyers so that it can be ready for a theatrical release this year and, most likely, the awards season. So far, the director has not been able to find a major buyer, but the marketing campaign is great, despite the fact that it seems that the director is paying for it out of his own pocket, as all the official information we have comes from the director himself or his personal social media profiles. We have received some teaser photos, and a teaser video, and today, the first official teaser trailer was also released, which you can check out below.

After a tantalizing teaser clip that showed Adam Driver precipitously balanced on the edge of a skyscraper, Francis Ford Coppola has dropped an even more tantalizing full teaser for his $120 million self-funded epic, Megalopolis.
The trailer opens with a striking image of what might be rockets or asteroids falling toward a New York City-esque city that’s actually called The City of New Rome. As Laurence Fishburne’s character says, “When does an empire die? Does it collapse in one terrible moment? No, no. But there comes a time when...

Adam Driver has played a city-dwelling seducer before — think: “Girls” at the very least — but this time, the actor has transformed into a slick harbinger of chaos for Francis Ford Coppola’s epic “Megalopolis.”
Driver stars as artist and city planner Cesar Catilina, once again adjacent to faux Italian-ness for the screen. Cesar’s biggest opponent is Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare per the official synopsis. Yet when Cesar begins an affair with Franklyn’s socialite daughter Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), Cesar’s determined path to forge a new city begins to falter.
Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman also star.
Coppola writes, directs, and produces the epic feature which had an estimated budget of $120 million-plus.

The latest teaser trailer for Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis has been released (via SFFGazette.com), offering our best look yet at the legendary filmmaker's "Roman epic fable."
Showcasing a society in chaos, we see here that Coppola is essentially telling a classic Ancient Rome fable in a modern version of America. The visuals are undeniably gorgeous and the director clearly hopes this will be his magnum opus.
However, Megalopolis - which Coppola began writing in 1983 - still doesn't have distribution. Following a recent screening attended by studio and streaming executives, one distributor said, "There is just no way to position this movie," with the implication being that it's likely to struggle in theaters.
As a result, this one may end up on VOD/streaming.

Are you ready for the return of the king? It's been 13 years since Francis Ford Coppola helmed a feature film — that would be 2011's weird horror flick "Twixt" — and now he's back in the director's chair to realize his dream project. In the 1980s, Coppola started writing "Megalopolis," an epic, sprawling drama that could very well be his biggest movie ever. He would tinker with the work over the years and finally start shooting second unit footage in 2001.
And then disaster struck, literally. The film's script dealt with the aftermath of a disaster that befalls New York City, and just as Coppola was gearing up to get "Megalopolis" off the ground, the 9/11 attacks changed everything. Realizing that no one at the time would be in the mood to watch a post-disaster movie set in New York, Coppola shelved the project — but he never forgot about it.

“Our new film ‘Megalopolis’ is the best work I’ve ever had the privilege to preside over,” reads a quote attributed to iconic director Francis Ford Coppola attached to the official trailer for his new epic film.
The picture, which will premiere in competition on Thursday at the Cannes Film Festival, has been a project many years in the making for the director. He first began work on the screenplay in the 1980s.
The legendary filmmaker behind “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now” has invested $120 million of his own money into the film.
The trailer starts with a voice-over musing about the decline of empires – “when does an empire die? Does it collapse in one terrible moment? No, no. But there comes a time when people no longer believe in it” — before cutting to a Roman chariot race, a metropolitan skyscape and scenes of protest.

We've already heard so much about Francis Ford Coppola's struggles to get his giant new film Megalopolis made — from financial wobbles, casting changes and, most recently, a screening for studios and streamers that generated little interest in the way of distribution deals. Yet with a French release in place and an upcoming premiere at the Cannes Film Festival designed to boost the buzz, Coppola has put the first clip from the film, featuring Adam Driver's character, online. Check it out:
Megalopolis is set in an alternate modern America, where the city of New Rome is at a pivot point in history. It has to adapt or crumble, but there is conflict between Cesar Catilina (Driver), who dreams of a utopian, idealistic future for the city and its incumbent mayor, Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who clings to the status quo, allowing greed, special interests and partisan warfare to dominate.

Ahead of the movie's world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14, the first trailer for Francis Ford Coppola's sci-fi passion project, Megalopolis, has been released online.
Really more of a scene preview than a proper teaser, the footage sees Adam Driver's character, Caesar, step out on to the ledge of a building and walk precariously towards the edge. Caesar then begins to topple forward, but before he falls, he yells "time stop," and freezes in place. After a few moments, he snaps his fingers and the world around him returns to normal.
Coppola shared the clip on Instagram, with a sad addendum.
"Megalopolis has always been a film dedicated to my dear wife Eleanor. I really had hoped to celebrate her birthday together this May 4th. But sadly that was not to be, so let me share with everyone a gift on her behalf."

A clip for one of the most anticipated films of Cannes has been unveiled this morning by writer/director Francis Ford Coppola. Opening with that famous American Zoetrope logo from the 1970s, the clip begins with Adam Driver’s character exiting a window at the top floor of a skyscraper and slowly inching towards the building’s sloped edge. As he bends to look down at the street below, then lifts a leg to step off, he loses his balance and yells, “Time stop!” The world freezes and Driver’s character is able to lean back and regain his footing before snapping time back into action. If one looks deep enough, a metaphor can be found for Coppola’s entire cinematic career within this simple two minute scene.

We have already talked about Francis Ford Coppola’s major return to film, the epic project Megalopolis, which has been described as a visionary work, but is nevertheless having trouble finding a distributor. The movie is facing an uphill battle as we have reported, but it seems that Coppola has decided to do some of his own marketing to convince the studios to take his film. Not long ago, we provided you with a first-look image from the movie, showing stars Adam Driver and Nathalie Emmanuel, and just today, a first teaser video focusing – once again – on Driver has been released, confirming several interesting things.
Just a brief reminder before we continue. As we have written, the story of Megalopolis is an interesting one altogether. The movie was conceived way back in 1979, while Coppola was filming Apocalypse Now, one of the greatest war movies ever made. Now, 45 years later, the movie is finally complete,...

The Francis Ford Coppola passion project Megalopolis, an idea the 85-year-old filmmaker says has been brewing in his mind for around half of his life, is set to have its world premiere at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. In anticipation of the Cannes screening, the maestro himself, Coppola, has released our first look at some of the movie’s footage. It came with a sweet dedication to his late wife, Eleanor, reading:
Megalopolis has always been a film dedicated to my dear wife Eleanor. I really had hoped to celebrate her birthday together this May 4th. But sadly that was not to be, so let me share with everyone a gift on her behalf.
Just a few days ago, Vanity Fair unveiled an image from the film that features the characters played by Adam Driver and Nathalie Emmanuel:
Coppola began writing Megalopolis in the 1980s but knew that it would require a huge budget,...

Francis Ford Coppola’s self-funded feature Megalopolis has revealed a first look image after landing a Cannes competition berth.
The project follows the rebuilding of a metropolis after it has fallen into decline, with two competing visions — one from the idealist architect Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), the other from corrupt Mayor Frank Cicero, played by Giancarlo Esposito — colliding.
The first official image from Megalopolis reveals Driver eyeing a rebuilding of the City of New Rome, while Nathalie Emmanuel, as Julia Cicero, the socialite daughter of Mayor Cicero, looks on. Megalopolis is structured as a Roman epic fable set in an imagined modern America.
To rebuild New Rome, Julia Cicero ultimately comes between a Cesar Catilina she falls in love with and Frank Cicero whom she remains loyal to as her father, as the two men battle with competing visions.
