Television shows seem well-organized and choreographed. Yet, not everything about them always goes according to plan.
For example, an incidental character sometimes steals a scene and creates memorable television history.
Then, there are the characters who take things a step further by stealing scenes repeatedly until they become the stars themselves.
Particular characters, such as Dr. Gregory House on House, are often created to be standouts. Yet, occasionally, those main protagonists are entirely overshadowed.
In rare instances, characters who were supposed to be incidental became regulars and took over entire shows.
The Fonz on Happy Days (1974-1984)
Happy Days underwent several changes, including the recasting and eventual disappearance of Chuck Cunningham's character, but Arthur (The Fonz) Fonzarelli's addition most dramatically altered the show's trajectory.
Initially, Happy Days focused on the Cunningham family, especially teenager Richie (Ron Howard). The Fonz (Henry Winkler) was a side character. However, the motorcycle-riding, leather jacket-wearing greaser soon took over.

The trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s new thriller Trap has arrived, giving a glimpse into Josh Hartnett’s performance as an unexpected serial killer. Watch the full clip below.
In Trap, Harnett plays a father who takes his teen daughter to a concert performed by pop star Lady Raven. The film interweaves the story with Lady Raven’s performance, taking place in near-real time.
Beginning as a wholesome family experience, the trailer drastically shifts in tone when Hartnett’s character discovers the police have set up a trap (get it?) at the concert to capture a notorious serial killer called The Butcher. Seemingly giving away the film’s big twist, Harnett is revealed to be The Butcher.
Written and directed by Shyamalan, Trap also stars Ariel Donoghue, Hayley Mills, and Allison Pill. It’s set to arrive in theaters on August 9th.

“Abbott Elementary” star Lisa Ann Walter shared with People that she’d be up for revisiting her 1998 version of the classic “Parent Trap,” telling the outlet, “Yes, absolutely.” She was only too happy to speak about her “Parent Trap” costar, Lindsay Lohan, at the NAACP Image Awards on Saturday.
“I would love to go back for another version of it — or if [Lohan] wants to come on to our show, I’d love that, too,” she added.
This isn’t the first time Walter has discussed bringing Lohan onto the hit ABC sitcom. In January, she told Entertainment Weekly that the younger actress could play a relative. “I guess we’d have to make her a relative since we’re both redheads — since I’m a ‘redhead,’ and she actually is,” Walter explained.
In February, Walter brought up the possibility of reviving her “Parent Trap” character again, this time at the SAG Awards.

M. Night Shyamalan has signed a multi-year first-look directing and producing agreement with Warner Bros., and up first is a mysterious psychological thriller titled Trap.
The film has been dated for theatrical release on August 2, 2024, and it’s reportedly set at a concert. Josh Hartnett (30 Days of Night) stars, and he teases in a new chat with Indiewire that Shyamalan’s new movie is going to be a big time “pivot” for him as an actor.
“It’s a pivot,” Hartnett tells Indiewire. “But I try to make all of my roles pivots. If you’re playing the same thing again and again, it gets boring to the audience.”
“Working with M. Night was one of the best experiences of my career,” Hartnett adds. “I think he’s a true artist in the capital-a sense of the word. And I think people are gonna be really surprised and excited about the movie we make.

Warner Brothers has been undergoing some restructuring since it was merged with Discovery. This has caused some uproar in their release schedules and even caused some films to be shelved altogether. Just when things seemed to stabilize, two industry strikes again caused chaos across the board. So, what can we look forward to for the Warner Brothers 2024 release schedule?
Dune Part Two – March 15th
The second installment of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune saga hits theaters. The first one fought against a Covid release but still earned a respectable amount at the box office. Fans of the property seem excited to check out this one, so it should be a decent hit. If the box office is sizable enough for the WB, then a third film will be on the way, as the director has commented that he has already started writing it based on Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah.

Death In Paradise returns to our screens in February, and the BBC have released plot and cast details.
Death In Paradise has been one of the BBC’s most successful dramas in recent years. Created by Robert Thorogood in 2011, the show’s thirteenth series is about to hit our screens. It has seen Ben Miller, Kris Marshall, Ardal O’Hanlon and current detective Ralf Little solve a remarkably high number of murders for such a small Caribbean island.
Last year, Marshall’s character Humphrey Goodman starred in spin-off Beyond Paradise, which paired him with Not Going Out star Sally Bretton and relocated the action to Cornwall. Proving popular with viewers, it recently returned for a Christmas special and a second series will be broadcast this year.
A further spin off, entitled Return to Paradise was announced last year, with action taking place in Australia.

Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor have been dating for about eight years, but they’re not looking to work together onscreen anytime soon.
“I can’t imagine,” Taylor told Variety on the Emmys red carpet. “I don’t like seeing couples doing things because I’m always aware of the coupledom.”
Holland did reveal that they have been pitched “one or two” projects and admitted that she can see them on stage together in “The Chalk Garden,” a 1955 play by Enid Bagnold about a murder mystery involving a grandmother, her granddaughter and a governess. The script also got a 1964 film adaptation starring Deborah Kerr and Hayley Mills. “It’s a very rarified kind of play,” Taylor said.
The couple began dating in December 2015 after first meeting at a party a decade earlier. Paulson celebrated Taylor turning 81 on Sunday with a post on Instagram. “Happy Birthday to my one and only love,...

2023 may have been a complicated year for the film industry, but it was a great year for movies. So, hey: No pressure, 2024.
As we sit here in the January doldrums, we can only look at the months and ahead and hope. Will those massively anticipated sequels live up to the hype? Will the latest releases from bona fide masters be worth the wait? Will everything that is supposed to come out this year actually come out this year? The anticipation is killing us.
This is far from a comprehensive list of every intriguing movie hitting theaters in 2024, but it does represent the titles that have the /Film team's attention already. Naturally, we expect dozens of incredible surprises to emerge from out of nowhere, especially as the film festival season starts to kick off. And since we're not psychics, we had to stick to the movies that we know are coming out this year,...

Fans of Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” had to wait more than 50 years to see the classic children’s novel transferred to the big screen, but their patience was finally rewarded this spring. Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig (“The Edge of Seventeen”) and featuring such A-listers as Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates, the faithful film adaptation boasts an awe-inspiring Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 99% and was even described by its source’s author in a “Today” interview as “better than the book.” As the 2024 movie awards season begins, its best shot at a Golden Globe nomination lies with its 15-year-old star, Abby Ryder Fortson, who would be the fifth youngest contender in the history of her category.
At this point, Fortson is hovering directly outside of Gold Derby’s predicted six-person Best Comedy/Musical Actress lineup with the support of just over a quarter of our oddsmakers.

Actor Kirk Douglas hoped to star in an onscreen adaptation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest after doing the stage version. But his father Kirk Douglas didn’t think much of the casting decision, especially when he wanted Nicholson’s starring role for himself.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was a film that both Douglas and his son Michael were extremely passionate about. Douglas famously starred in the Broadway play of Cuckoo’s Nest back in the early 1960s as Randle McMurphy. He also owned the rights to the play, and had hopes of translating it to the big screen. But he had a hard time finding a studio that was willing to make the movie.
Eventually, he handed over the rights to his son Michael, who was able to secure funding for the feature.

Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp were permitted to conduct this interview amid the actors' strike through A24's interim agreement with SAG-AFTRA.
"Dicks: The Musical" is kind of like "The Parent Trap" - in that it follows two identical twins who are separated at birth and reunite later - and it's unlike "The Parent Trap" in that it has lots of jokes about sex and being gay and incest and the sewer boys (we'll come back to them). It stars Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson, who first wrote the story as a two-person comedy show titled "F*cking Identical Twins."
"It's a classic story at this point," Sharp jokes to Popsugar, referring to why they decided to do a "Parent Trap" twist. "There's 'The Iliad,' there's 'The Parent Trap,' 'Macbeth.'"

This article contains The Wheel of Time spoilers.
Actress Hayley Mills may have upended her parents’ lives in Disney’s The Parent Trap back in 1961, but her cameo in The Wheel of Time similarly showed how one Aes Sedai appearing in a flashback could influence the course of history for several of the show’s major characters. What at first glance appears to be a Dragon Reborn prophecy of which viewers were already aware becomes, upon closer inspection, a turning point not only for Rand as the subject of the vision, but also for Siuan, Moiraine, and the entire Damodred family.
Mills portrays an Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah named Gitara Moroso, who was Keeper twenty years ago when Siuan and Moiraine were still among the Accepted in the White Tower. In The Wheel of Time, they are shown as a happy, carefree couple, who are particularly glad to...

There’s no shortage of brilliant detectives in novels, film and television, but one of the greatest — or at least the one with the fanciest facial hair — is Hercule Poirot. The Belgian investigator, created by Agatha Christie, has appeared 33 novels, more than 50 short stories, and has been played by a variety of iconic actors.
But for whatever reason, Poirot has only sporadically appeared on the big screen, with many of his earliest movie appearances being lost to time, while some of his other noteworthy adventures were rewritten as vehicles for Christie’s other beloved creation, Miss Marple.
Here we take a look at the various theatrically-released adventures of Hercule Poirot, from the 1930s to today, and see which of his mysteries were truly worth solving.

Take a bit of Kafka, throw in some Buñuelian realism, add a dose of John Cheever (circa The Swimmer) and then hand the recipe over to a first-time feature-making Swedish director with fond memories of a childhood spent in Ikea furniture stores, then put together an A-List cast, and you essentially have Mother, Couch.
A World Premiere this weekend at the Toronto Film Festival, this truly surreal, metaphysical mind trip will not be to everyone’s taste, but the cast, including a couple of Oscar winners, will make it go down easier even if some of it more closely resembles a thespian exercise at the Actor’s Studio, rather than a major motion picture. It certainly is watchable, and writer/director Niclas Larsson makes the most of his adaptation of Jerker Virdborg’s book, Mamma I Sofa which centers on a seemingly normal outing to a furniture store but turns...

Summer’s almost over, which means the start of the traditional TV season. And while the ongoing Hollywood double strike delayed production for scripted originals across the industry, there’s still an avalanche of new and returning shows coming to broadcast, cable and streaming services this fall.
While we’ll have to wait longer for the return of broadcast staples like the “One Chicago” franchise, “Young Sheldon” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” networks are planning to lean on banked originals (like NBC’s “Found” and “The Irrational”), unscripted staples like NBC’s “The Voice” (with new judge Reba McEntire) and “Dancing With the Stars” returning to ABC, international acquisitions (“Sullivan’s Crossing” on The CW) and even borrowing buzzworthy shows from sibling cable networks (“Yellowstone” airing on CBS). Programming on cable and streaming services has not been as impacted by the production stoppage yet, with plenty of comedy (Paramount+’s “Frasier” reboot), drama...

Per ABC, the 81-year-old British actress plays Maxine, who “comes into the hospital with a friend, but surprisingly knows Jules from outside the hospital.” Jules, a surgical intern who first appeared in Season 19, is played by Adelaide Kain.
Mills also co-stars in Chris Pine’s upcoming directorial debut “Poolman” with Jennifer Jason Leigh, Danny DeVito and Annette Bening. In 2022, she developed and co-hosted “British Classics With Juliet Mills” on TCM. She recently starred in U.K. stage productions of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Lady Vanishes” as the enigmatic Miss Froy and “Darker Shores” opposite her husband Maxwell Caulfield.

In the latest Saturday Night Live episode, Jenna Ortega, the youngest person to host the show this season, performed a parody skit of the 1998 film The Parent Trap alongside Wednesday co-star Fred Armisen.
She acted out the twins Hallie and Annie in Nancy Meyers‘ big hit, which was itself a remake of the 1961 version starring Hayley Mills. Bowen Yang, cast as the less-than-competent director, is leading a rehearsal of the infamous scene when Hallie and Annie realize that they are twins in their summer camp cabin. Yang asks Armisen, a crew member, to step in as Ortega’s “twin.”
Armisen, however, keeps interjecting with inappropriate and random ad-libs, professing his love for Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum Lisa Rinna and commenting on how “hot” Shawn Mendes is.
Eventually, he and Ortega act out the part when they piece together parts of an old photograph of their parents, which match perfectly.

With the release of "Scream VI," Jenna Ortega is appearing on multiplex screens everywhere this weekend. However, she also got to act on the small screen, by hosting the March 11, 2023 episode of "Saturday Night Live."
The "Wednesday" breakout star is primarily known for her roles in horror — she's been called the genre's latest "scream queen," — but this episode gave her a chance to show off her comedic chops. From an "X-Men" parody where she played a Rogue stand-in to a send-up of "The Exorcist," Ortega's "SNL" hosting gig was rife with movie parodies.
The most off-the-wall parody was of "The Parent Trap" — which starts with the premise that Ortega is starring in a new remake of the film. In both the 1961 original and Nancy Meyers' 1998 remake, two young girls discover they're identical twins of divorced parents and plot to reunite their family by swapping places. In both versions, a...

Jenna Ortega could have starred in a remake of The Parent Trap.
Ortega, who was a child actress and star of Disney Channel comedy Stuck in the Middle, did, however, give it a go on Saturday Night Live.
She teamed with her Wednesday co-star Fred Armisen to read through the lines, while Bowen Yang directed.
Ortega, who was not born when the Lindsay Lohan-fronted remake of The Parent Trap premiered in 1998, may have aged out of actually starring in a new version of the body identical twin comedy, but in the skit, she played both 11-year-old twins Hallie Parker and Annie James.
Armisen, as Raymond, was just helping out reading the lines, or was he?
The Parent Trap, which was based on David Swift’s 1961 Hayley Mills-fronted comedy, starred Lohan as well as Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson. It was directed and co-written by Nancy Meyers.

Many things about the Academy Awards have changed over the years, but for the past six decades there has been at least one constant: The red carpet. The hues have varied over the years, but it has always been some shade of red. Until this year.
On Wednesday outside the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, workers unspooled a champagne-coloured carpet as Jimmy Kimmel, who is hosting the 95th Oscars on Sunday, presided over the occasion.
“I think the decision to go with a champagne carpet over a red carpet shows how confident we are that no blood will be shed,” Kimmel said.
The decision to change the colour came from creative consultants Lisa Love, a longtime Vogue contributor, and Raúl Àvila, the creative director for the glamorous Met Gala in New York.

For the first time since 1961, the Oscars carpet will not be red this year.
