Based on the novel by Anthony Burgess, Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film "A Clockwork Orange" is set in the not-too-distant future when roving British teenage gangs have mutated into bizarre, ultra-violent, morals-free hedonists who commit crimes to their hearts' content. The protagonist is Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell) a 15-year-old punk who drinks drug-laced milk before taking to the street with his gang of droogs to savagely and gleefully beat and assault anyone who passes into their field of vision. Alex is eventually arrested and put into prison where the government subjects him to bizarre new rehabilitation techniques in an attempt to turn his mind away from violence.
Throughout, Alex is depicted as clearly beyond redemption. He has no compassion and will never have compassion. When he reads about Jesus Christ being crucified, he imagines himself to be the Roman soldier whipping him. The government's brainwashing techniques only instill in him a...

It’s a busy week for horror with The Pope’s Exorcist and Renfield arriving on the big screen. The latter reimagines classic Universal Monsters characters with a comedic twist, though it’s hardly the first to depict bloodsuckers in a humorous way. This week’s streaming picks celebrate vampire horror-comedies, giving you plenty of options to sink your teeth into.
Here’s where to watch these titles this week.

Babani explained that Hutton, who won a best supporting actor Academy Award for his role in Ordinary People over four decades ago, will play Jeff, described as a shady businessman, who hooks up with Magdalena, an equally shady Russian lady, played by Amanda Donohoe (Liar Liar...

Few actors are employed to draw a crowd since the reinvention of blockbuster filmmaking, which promotes the concept or the characters way above the people playing them. However, there remains a handful of actors who can still draw a crowd. Actors whose presence tells us, this is a movie worth taking a look at.
Sam Rockwell is one of those actors. Someone who consistently chooses interesting, low-to-mid budget movies. From Moon to The Way, Way Back to Three Billboards, Rockwell’s choices seem to align with what many of us want to see.
Sadly, even Rockwell is capable of a duff choice. Even still, to discover he’s involved with a movie like Blue Iguana is still a hell of a surprise.

Opening a crime film, an indie crime film for that matter, in a diner only screams to remind audiences of Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, setting a high bar for the film to come. Which, frankly, means your film better live up to that expectation… Thankfully Blue Iguana does.
Blue Iguana, a British-American crime film, tells the story of ex-jailbirds, Eddie (Sam Rockwell) and Paul (Ben Schwartz), who are on parole, working in a New York diner… Eddie is calm and confident, whereas, Paul is loud-mouthed and impulsive. Everyone remembers the best among the scrappy 1980s films that started American “indie film” in earnest — particularly those over-stylized, wink-wink comedies by Jim Jarmusch, Susan Seidelman, Alexandre Rockwell, and so on that were among the movement’s most influential early successes. Similarly, few could forget how much fun “Reservoir Dogs” and “Pulp Fiction” were, revitalizing the crime-caper genre with wit and outsized directorial personality.
What we’d prefer to forget is just how many labored comedy quirkfests and effortfully wiseass capers the above films “inspired” for years afterward — wannabe movies straining for the same qualities without any original inspiration, failing to find their own voice while deliberately or unconsciously mimicking somebody else’s. The majority of these pale imitations wound up a blip on the Sundance Festival radar — if they were lucky — then were forgotten ever after.
Unfortunately, those happily buried cinematic memories come rolling back with the arrival of “Blue Iguana,...

When one thinks of filmmaker Ken Russell, one thinks “excessive”, “lurid”, and “over the top”. But there’s an honest to God beauty in the profane as seen through his eyes. Simply put, you can choose to experience a Russell film or ignore it, but they will always live on as messy, indulgent, yet heartfelt works. Personally, these are a few of my favorite things; and when Russell directed his flights of ripened fancy towards a piece of horror, the results could be spectacular like The Lair of the White Worm (1988), a hilarious and ribald tribute to Hammer, Aip, and Amicus.
Released just in time for Halloween in the U.S. by Vestron Pictures, Lair brought in less than its $2.5 million budget at the box office and the reviews were mixed. This was really nothing new for Russell, who by this point in the game was either revered or reviled...

Sam Rockwell and Ben Schwartz have teamed up for a new action crime comedy called Blue Iguana and today we have a trailer for you to check out. The two actors star as a couple of small-time crooks on parole and while working at a New York diner an English lawyer walks into their lives and offers them a "simple" job to steal a rare jewel in London. They see this as a way to change their lives but as you'd expect they find themselves in way over their head.
I'll watch anything that Sam Rockwell is in, and while this doesn't look like his best work, there's still a chance that maybe it could end up being a fun film. The movie was directed by British director Hadi Hajaig and this is the synopsis:

"Steal it back, collect the reward." Screen Media Films has debuted the official trailer for a crime comedy titled Blue Iguana, the latest film from British director Hadi Hajaig. Blue Iguana stars Ben Schwartz and Sam Rockwell as small-time crooks on parole and working in a New York diner. Their dead-end lives are soon turned upside down when an English lawyer walks into the diner with an offer they can't refuse: a "simple" job to steal a rare jewel in London. Hijinks and chaos ensue, of course. The cast includes Phoebe Fox, Simon Callow, Amanda Donohoe, Peter Ferdinando, and Anton Saunders. This looks like a really bad, wannabe Snatch that will probably be a waste of time to sit through. Watch out. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Hadi Hajaig's Blue Iguana, direct from YouTube: Small time New York crooks Eddie (Sam Rockwell) and Paul (Ben Schwartz) are in...

This very British monster movie from 1988 is based on the final, unfinished novel by Bram Stoker. The book was apparently written in a state of sweaty delirium, so it’s easy to see why enfant terrible Ken Russell was drawn to it.
Starring Hugh Grant and Peter Capaldi (both remarkably fresh-faced) and some dodgy regional accents, the setting is rural Derbyshire, and the enemy is a mythical giant worm that lives in a cave. Scottish archaeology student Angus (Capaldi) comes to stay in a guest house owned by the Trent sisters, Mary (Sammi Davis) and Eve (Catherine Oxenberg). After digging up the skull of an oversized reptile, he discovers that the Trents’ parents went mysteriously missing a year ago. Could these events be related?...

Some of the most memorable cult horror films come from eccentrics of the genre. Ken Russell was a director who left his unforgettable mark on film history, with the likes of Tommy and The Devils. In The Lair of the White Worm he creates a truly cult experience that has stayed a truly unique piece of horror entertainment.
When Angus Flint (Peter Capaldi) a Scottish archaeologist discovers a strange skull on the site of an old convent, it seems he may have discovered the remains of the d’Ampton Worm. A legendary snake-like creature killed by local landowner James D’Amton’s (Hugh Grant) ancestor, it soon vanishes. With villagers disappearing it appears that an ancient evil has been awoken once again.

Twelve Unsinkable Facts for Titanic’s 20th AnniversaryTwelve Unsinkable Facts for Titanic’s 20th AnniversaryKurt Anthony12/19/2017 10:00:00 Am
“It’s been 84 years….”
Actually, it’s been 20 years! James Cameron’s record-breaking blockbuster Titanic celebrates its 20th anniversary today and we know you’re frozen with excitement.
A chilling tale of romantic disaster, Titanic combines the fictitious love story of Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) and Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) with the untimely fate of the R.M.S. Titanic, one of history’s most famous ships.
Originally an elaborate plan to obtain funding for deep-sea filming expeditions, Cameron has stated that he made Titanic because he wanted to dive to the real wreck. As the writer, director, co-producer, and co-editor of the film, Cameron ended up spending more time with the ship than its actual passengers.
Filmed on a production budget of $200M, Titanic was the most expensive movie ever made at the time.

It’s great when a fancy costume picture really has something to say — Alan Bennett’s crazy tale of a king’s episode of mental illness becomes a highly entertaining comedy of errors, but with serious personal and political ramifications. Nigel Hawthorne is exceptionally good as the sovereign whose brain has de-railed; Helen Mirren, Ian Holm, Rupert Everett and Amanda Donohoe variously try to help him — or steal his crown.

Lionsgate's superb Vestron Video Collector's Series continues the upcoming January 2017 with classics from Ken Russell and Bob Balaban. We've previously reviewed their introductory titles, Blood Diner and Chopping Mall, and if those releases are anything like these new ones, we are in for a treat. January will see the Blu-ray premiere of Ken Russell's bonkers folk horror film Lair of the White Worm starring Hugh Grant, Amanda Donohoe, and Catherine Oxenberg. This film was a VHS and cable staple throughout the '90s and along with Altered States was one of Russell's most culturally ubiquitous films in the Us thanks to Vestron Video. We will also see the Blu-ray premiere of Bob Balaban's classic cannibal spoof, Parents. This film features Randy Quaid and Mary Beth...

Five Weapons # 1
Written and illustrated by Jimmie Robinson
Colors by Pat Little
Published by Shadowline Comics
One of these days people are going to run out of ideas for fictional schools with a “whacky” twist. We’ve done stories about schools for ninjas, wizards, superheroes. Once someone creates a piece of fiction about the crazy hi-jinx at a secret school for training the world’s best arm-chair repair men it’s safe to say we’ll have hit the saturation point. Though it will be interesting to see how Billy Baskins overcomes lord Reclimus and the Lazy Boy of Sorrows.
But anyway, “Five Weapons”, then.
“Five Weapons” is a new comic out by Image’s “Shadowline” imprint about (Drumroll) a secret, elite school for the children of assassins. Once enrolled children have to pick one of the school’s five weapons clubs and stick with it, because the best thing...

"Titanic" could have been quite a different movie. While fans of Cameron's 1997 film might not be able to picture Jack and Rose as having been played by anyone other than a baby-faced Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, the truth is that a bevy of other stars were considered for their parts.
Let's do a quick tally. Per Not Starring, a site that compiles casting news, here are the gents who, in one way or another, had a shot at playing Jack: Christian Bale, Billy Crudup, Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Stephen Dorff, Matthew McConaughey, Chris O'Donnell, River Phoenix and -- wait for it -- Macaulay Culkin.
Now the ladies. An even more spellbinding number of actresses were once considered for the role of Rose: Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Christina Applegate, Jennifer Connelly, Claire Danes, Geena Davis, Minnie Driver, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Emily Mortimer, Jeri Ryan, Winona Ryder, Tori Spelling,...

Oscar-nominated maverick found inspiration for his work in music and literature
After a film career full of wild drama, gaudy conflagrations and operatic flourishes, the director Ken Russell died quietly in hospital on Sunday afternoon at the age of 84, after suffering a series of strokes. – effecting a quiet, discreet exit from the comfort of his hospital bed. "My father died peacefully," said his son Alex Verney-Elliott. "He died with a smile on his face."
Known for his flamboyant, often outrageous brand of film-making, Russell made movies that juggled high and low culture with glee and invariably courted controversy. His 1969 breakthrough, the Oscar-winning Women in Love, electrified audiences with its infamous nude wrestling scene, while 1971's The Devils – a torrid brew of sex, violence and Catholicism – found itself banned across Italy and was initially rejected by its backer, Warner Bros. Happy Birthday to Ryan Kwanten (above), who turns 35, Ed Harris is 61, and Jon Stewart is 49. In shocking news, Rep. In sad news, legendary master of glorious wretched excess Ken Russell has died at the age of 84. His films were visually spectacular if not always entirely coherent, but that was a good thing. Among his classics, he gave us the iconic nude wrestling scene in Women In Love, the trippy Altered States, that musical about the deaf, dumb, and blind kid, and the indescribable The Lair Of The White Worm, featuring Amanda Donohoe in one of my favorite performances of the 80's. Following the sad death of director Ken Russell yesterday, James looks back at his sometimes stunning body of work...
While his best years were clearly long behind him, the passing of director Ken Russell, one of the undoubted titans of post-war British cinema, still feels like a huge loss for the world of film. Contrarian, provocateur and a lover of excess in all its forms, Russell was a filmmaker whose work was rarely restrained, seldom safe and almost always memorable, although not necessarily for the right reasons.
Despite a childhood desire to be a ballet dancer, it was as a photographer that Russell initially made his name, and it was through this route that he secured a job in 1959 within the BBC.
Working as an arts documentarian during the 1960s, Russell honed his craft, creating a series of artful, evocative films, mainly focusing on composers such as Debussy, Elgar and Strauss.

Former Emmerdale star Amanda Donohoe has joked that her murderous character Natasha Wylde could have her jail sentence reduced on appeal if she ever decided to return to the soap. Natasha was given a minimum prison term of 21 years in late 2010 as she was finally punished for killing her husband Mark. Donohoe, speaking on This Morning, confessed today that she found her time at Emmerdale more enjoyable than she had ever anticipated. "That's why I stayed an extra year - I wanted to see her through to the end," the actress explained. "I started to really quite like Natasha and I felt rather sorry for her - her wonderful life was completely destroyed by her lying husband!" "[Leaving] was a hard decision and I miss those guys so much - they're such a lovely bunch of cast to work with," she continued. When show hosts Phillip (more)...

James Sutton has revealed his reasons for bowing out of Emmerdale, explaining that he wants to "get cracking" with new career projects. The actor's character Ryan Lamb leaves the village in next Tuesday's episode, following in the footsteps of mum Faye (Kim Thomson), who also recently departed. Ryan has been a less prominent fixture on screen in recent months after the high drama surrounding the Wyldes and the Lambs came to an end in late 2010. Speaking to Holy Soap about his Emmerdale exit, Sutton commented: "I was thinking about it last year. Lyndon Ogbourne and Amanda Donohoe left and Kim Thomson said she was thinking about leaving, so my whole family set-up in the village was disappearing. "I came from Hollyoaks before that, so I've done five-and-a-half years on soaps now. I'm privileged to have had that training (more)...

Emmerdale star Amanda Donohoe has said that fans of the soap seem to have supported her troubled character Natasha Wylde this year. With the help of her son Nathan, Natasha has spent the past few months desperately trying to cover her tracks after killing husband Mark back in January. The storyline has reached a climax this month as mechanic Ryan Lamb is facing trial for the crime. Speaking to Digital Spy about the ongoing plotline, Donohoe explained: "It's funny because, when you're out in the supermarket or in a cab, people never fail to give you their opinion! Everybody always said, 'I'm glad you shot him - if you hadn't shot him, I would have!' "So that's fantastic - even through murder I managed to get the audience to empathise with this woman!
