Fresh from its Cannes premiere George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” dashed into the lead at the South Korea cinema box office. In doing so, it deposed “The Roundup: Punishment,” the local crime actioner that has dominated Korean cinemagoing for the past month.
“Furiosa” earned $575,000 from 75,400 ticket sales on Wednesday, giving it a Korean total of $597,000, including a sprinkling of preview showings, according to data from the Kobis tracking service that is operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
South Korea was not the only territory to enjoy the “Furiosa” release on May 22 – others included France, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines – but by virtue of its geography and reliable, publicly-available data, it becomes the first to report the film’s commercial credentials.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga roared through Cannes before it launches in theaters Friday after nearly 10 years in development. The prequel film builds on the Australian wasteland universe established in George Miller’s four other movies of the franchise: Mad Max (1979), Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) and Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).
In Fury Road, which became the first in the franchise to receive Academy Award nominations (winning six out of ten awards), Charlize Theron portrayed Imperator Furiosa. Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the titular role in this next installment, which shows her backstory of getting kidnapped by Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) and his Biker Hord. At 10 years old, she is forced to grow up fast, and while she fights for survival, her only wish is to return home and reunite with her family.

We’re about to witness one of the most brutal battles in the entire Mad Max saga. Immortan Joe and Dementus were nothing compared to our heroine’s final and most deadly enemy: a chubby orange cat named Garfield. Indeed, we’re about to see one of the biggest and most unlikely box office battles of the summer. While most box office analysts believe audiences will choose Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, George Miller’s epic prequel to Fury Road, as their Memorial Day movie of choice, family audiences heading out this holiday weekend may make The Garfield Movie a stronger-than-expected opponent.
I’m expecting Furiosa to make about $40 million this weekend, with Garfield in a close second place with $35 million. Why so low on Furiosa? I have a few reasons. For one thing, even if Fury Road is one of the greatest action films of all time, it...

For decades, Memorial Day weekend has traditionally been a hugely busy weekend at the box office, often offering the biggest of franchise sequels — or in this case, two potential franchise prequels? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The Memorial Day bump that has helped so many franchise installments before will certainly be in play for George Miller‘s return to the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max with “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” a prequel that tells the earlier story of Charlize Theron‘s character from “Mad Max: Fury Road.” This one stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the title character, joined by Chris Hemsworth as a new antagonist called Dementus, as well a mix of new characters and ones that appeared in “Fury Road.”

About a month ago, Marvel Studios dropped the second trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine. The highly viewed clip lay packed with easter eggs even as it included a complete and detailed look at Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
However, a scene towards the end featuring the famed duo jumping right into a sling ring portal caught fans off-guard and fueled rampant speculations about the involvement of other MCU legends such as Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange.

Mad Max is a staple name that comes to mind whenever action movies are discussed, and reasonably so. As director George Miller’s epic dystopian movie series has inspired numerous creators, it has revitalized the landscape of the action genre. In the course of four movies, the series has also introduced some of the most iconic characters in pop fiction, namely the titular protagonist, the cop turned vagabond drifter, Max Rockatansky, and the more intriguing, fierce warrior-survivor protagonist of Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa. Portrayed by an impeccable Charlize Theron, who delivered an unforgettable performance as the rugged survivor, Furiosa was quickly recognized as the definitive female action hero of the last decade.
Even keeping aside the extremely strong response from the audience, there was more than enough of a backstory hinted at for Furiosa as a character in Fury Road and enough curiosity regarding her origin to warrant a solo movie of her own.

Cannes market attendees have been paying tribute to Mark Damon, the veteran sales agent credited with inventing the independent film financing model who died on the eve of Cannes aged 91.
Chicago-born Damon entered the world of independent sales and production in the 1970’s while living and working in Italy where he had pursued a successful career as a leading man in spaghetti westerns.
He returned to the United States in 1977 and founded Producer Sales Organization (Pso) and grew his business licencing international rights on commercial independent films. Damon also established Vision International, Mdp Worldwide, Media 8, and most recently Foresight Unlimited.

With Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga hitting theaters soon, I figured now would be a good time to look back at the character’s origins in Mad Max: Fury Road. Like every other entry in the Mad Max franchise surprisingly enough, both Furiosa and Fury Road were released a substantially long time after the previous film and went through several major changes throughout development.
In the case of Fury Road specifically, it was initially conceived by director George Miller in 1987 before finally entering pre-production in 1998 with original series star Mel Gibson attached, only for the production to quickly spiral out of control in the wake of 9/11, the Iraq War, various location shoot issues, George Miller’s other priorities, and controversies surrounding Mel Gibson that made bringing him back a very bad idea.

“Garfiosa”? “Furiofield”?
Whatever the portmanteau for this Memorial Day weekend’s dual release of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “The Garfield Movie,” the two newcomers are aiming to jolt the sluggish summer season.
“Furiosa,” the fifth entry in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic “Mad Max” series, looks to lead the way with $40 million to $45 million from 3,750 venues over the four-day holiday weekend. Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” should trail in second with $30 million to $35 million from 4,000 venues between Friday and Monday. Box office comparisons to the same holiday weekend in 2023 will be tough given that Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” remake took the crown with $118 million.
Warner Bros. spent $168 million on “Furiosa,” not including the many millions to market the movie. It’s not expected to live up to the debut of its predecessor, 2015’s “Max Max: Fury Road,” which captured $45 million over three days. That film, led...

After nearly a decade, director George Miller has returned to the Wasteland with "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga." The film serves as a prequel to 2015's Oscar-winning, dangerous epic "Mad Max: Fury Road," which has garnered a reputation as one of the greatest action films ever made. Miller enlisted Anya Taylor-Joy ("The Queen's Gambit") and Chris Hemsworth ("Thor") to tell the tale of Furiosa years before we met her in "Fury Road." With the film hitting theaters this week, critics have weighed in, and while many are praising Miller's latest, others have vocally disliked it. So, what are critics saying about the long-awaited film?

There will be moviegoers at the Memorial Day weekend box office; the industry can be thankful for that. Just not as many as the previous two years when the entire 4-day frame exceeded $200M+.
With Warner Bros’ prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Alcon/Sony’s The Garfield Movie hitting marquees, the volume of event product increases, which is good thing. Nine years ago, director George Miller came kind of out of nowhere to deliver one of the greatest action movies of all time with "Mad Max: Fury Road." Miller revived the long-dead franchise with a film so universally beloved the only shocking thing is that it took nine years to get another "Mad Max" movie made. Well, here we are, staring down the barrel of the release of "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," which tells the origin story of Furiosa (played by Charlize Theron in "Fury Road"). The question is, can this prequel build on the audience that has come to adore "Fury Road" in the years since its release? Warner Bros. will need that to be the case for the film to be an outright hit at the box office.
"Furisa" hits theaters next weekend and will be opening directly against "The Garfield Movie." Admittedly, these films are both playing for radically different audiences.

It really does seem like legendary Australian filmmaker George Miller cannot miss his major projects. It really does. The visionary is the one who provided us with the Mad Max franchise, a cult classic series that initially starred Mel Gibson in the titular role before he was replaced by Tom Hardy in Fury Road. The latter is also known for introducing Furiosa, initially played by Charlize Theron, a character so popular that Miller decided to make a prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which premieres globally next week but has had its Cannes premiere only recently. Anya Taylor-Joy leads the movie, and based on the reaction at Cannes, Miller will have another major hit!

Taking on the role of a younger Furiosa was no small feat for Anya Taylor-Joy. The decision to avoid contacting Charlize Theron, who originally brought the character to life in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, was intentional. In her words, Taylor-Joy shared, Why didn’t I call Charlize? I went to the source, which is George , and was like, ‘What do you need me to be?’ The film, Furiosa, is a visually stunning and action-packed prequel set many years before the events of Mad Max: Fury Road. Almost nine years to the day since Mad Max: Fury Road premiered in Cannes, George Miller returns to the Croisette with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. It’s a deafening roar of a film, full of the same improbable vehicles and breathless pursuits through the director’s signature dystopian outback, though now told through a lens that can feel a bit slick at times. It tells the story of how Imperator Furiosa (immortalized by Charlize Theron in 2015 and gamely reinterpreted here by Alyla Browne and Anya Taylor-Joy) came to be, tracking her journey from childhood and the Place of Abundance––an Edenic oasis of renewable energy and worrying red apples––to hardened warrior in the wastelands of Bullet Farm, Gastown, and The Citadel of Immortan Joe. The concerns that met the trailer––suggesting Miller had traded in his predecessor’s practical effects for CGI––are, I’m sorry to say,...

As VIP visitors walk into the Dior Suite at the Majestic Hotel, they are met with images of the sun and a large lion sculpture made of shells in the lobby. Overlooking the Palais and its magnificent red carpet where the energy is electric this year — such as at the Furiosa world premiere, which received a seven-minute standing ovation — Dior’s beauty suite will be doing makeup for celebrities throughout the festival, getting them glammed up for their daytime photo calls and nighttime premieres.
Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron, Johnny Depp, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson (the face of the Dior Homme fragrance) have all visited the suite in past years. For the opening ceremony on May 14, Belgian actress Emilie Dequenne, French actress and comedian Camille Cottin and French actress Valerie Donzelli were all made up by Dior.
The marriage of fashion and film, especially at festivals like these, is symbiotic.

2024 has been a great year for movies so far, and it only seems to be getting better. From A24 making history with the Civil War to Wes Ball succeeding in crafting a worthy continuation to the Planet of the Apes trilogy, now it seems, George Miller is too joining in on the fun.
Notable for making one of the greatest action films of all time, his upcoming addition to the Mad Max franchise is set to debut next week. Although Miller set the bar extremely high with Fury Road, following Furiosa‘s score on the Tomatometer, things are looking promising for the prequel.

A fascinating blend of film mastery and personal devotion emerged recently when famed game designer Hideo Kojima shared his thoughts on George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. This profound respect for Miller’s craft comes ahead of Furiosa, a much-anticipated prequel to the wildly successful Mad Max: Fury Road. George Miller gets biblical in the opening moments of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the fifth installment in his postapocalyptic action franchise. The young Furiosa, played by Alyla Browne, picks a ripe piece of fruit from a tree growing at the edge of a verdant forest. “We’ve come too far,” says her companion, emphasizing the forbidden nature of the act with the perfect amount of allegorical on-the-noseness. What happens next certainly has the aura of divine punishment, as Furiosa is whisked away from her home (“the Green Place” first mentioned in Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road) by a masked group of motor bikers.
She’s no helpless waif, mind you, and with her steadfast mother, Mary Jo Bassa (Charlee Fraser), in hot pursuit, Furiosa gives as good as any of the lecherous brutes tormenting her. But the fates, not to mention the narrative dictates of an origin story with an already fixed outcome,...

The max in “Mad Max” stands for maximizing profit potential?
George Miller, the maverick 79-year-old Australian director, brought the fifth entry into his dystopian action franchise, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” to the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival this week.
While it’s been nearly a decade since “Mad Max: Fury Road” – the film that introduced the one-armed automotive avenger Imperator Furiosa, initially played by Charlize Theron but Anya Taylor-Joy in the prequel – Miller says he may not be done with stories set in the “guzzoline”-obsessed Wasteland.
“There are certainly other stories there. Mainly because in order to tell the story of ‘Fury Road’, we had to know the backstory of Furiosa and Max in the year before,” Miller said, revving up the engines of devoted fans. “That was a tool for the cast and crew. George Miller contemplated using de-aging technology so that Charlize Theron could feature in 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga'.The 79-year-old filmmaker has helmed the new 'Mad Max' prequel and explained that he opted to cast Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger version of the title character after being left unconvinced by the use of the tech in films such as Martin Scorsese's 'The Irishman' and Ang Lee's 'Gemini Man'.George told Variety: "Both of them were masterful directors, but it was never persuasive."I thought all people would be watching is Charlize looking young and knowing it's an effect."The director has always been interested in the use of technology in cinema – as shown in films such as 'Babe' and 'Happy Feet' – but conceded that it would have been "difficult" to implement it in his latest blockbuster.Miller said: "I mean basically,...

Cannes – George Miller’s “Furiosa” got a warm reception from global critics and the Cannes Film Festival faithful last night, and it already has many wondering if another “Mad Max” film is in the works. Miller has often told the story about how “Fury Road: A Mad Max Saga” was only made after scripts provided the back stories for Furiosa (originally played by Charlize Theron) and Max (Tom Hardy) were completed.

George Miller had to grind the pedal to get “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” finished in time for its global release next week.
Appearing at press conference at the Cannes Film Festival, auteur Miller discussed the tight deadline sitting beside his cast including Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke.
“We only finished the film two and a half weeks ago,” Miller told global reporters. It hits theaters on May 24. Taylor-Joy gushed about the incredible group of artisans — a team of 1,300 people — many of whom have worked on four other “Mad Max” films with Miller.
“People came out of retirement to work with George,” Taylor-Joy said. Her director piped in, saying, “I came out of retirement to work on this film.”
Australian pride was a major theme of the conference, as Miller fully embraced Australian accents on the production. Miller said his inspiration for the entire film series came from an analog childhood in Queensland.

The dust was just beginning to settle and the smell of guzzolene was still in the air after Wednesday night’s high-octane Cannes premiere of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. But after more than a decade of development and a grueling shoot, the work was not done for filmmaker George Miller and stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, who faced the international press during a lively conference to discuss the long journey to their Fury Road prequel.
Australian filmmaker Miller has now made five Mad Max films over 45 years, but none have been as anticipated as Furiosa. That’s thanks to the pedigree of Fury Road, Miller’s 2015 film that introduced the world to Imperator Furiosa, played in that feature by Charlize Theron. It is considered one of the greatest action movies of all time and became a surprise awards season juggernaut that won six Oscars.

The prestigious Cannes Film Festival witnesses several features each year, but only a handful of them manage to create an impression and earn a standing ovation worthwhile of talking. While the debate about whether the length of standing ovations at the festival is directly proportionate to its quality or not is an ongoing debate, the length is nonetheless a part of popular tradition and to some degree provides a measurement of the film’s future success.

Back in 2010, it was reported that director George Miller would be shooting two new entries in his Mad Max franchise back-to-back: the sequel Mad Max: Fury Road and a follow-up called Furiosa. But things didn’t work out that way, and making Mad Max: Fury Road on its own proved to quite a struggle – a five month shoot in the deserts of Namibia, with two lead actors (Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron as Furiosa) who couldn’t stand each other. Miller didn’t let the grueling process put him off making more Mad Max movies, though. Immediately after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, Miller announced that he had already written a screenplay and a novella of further stories… and Max himself would return in a film called Mad Max: The Wasteland. But eight years have passed, and while Furiosa drawing raves following the Cannes premiere,...

It has to be said that nobody does it better in terms of helter-skelter high octane action than director George Miller who gave us the first in the Mad Max franchise some 45 years ago.
There’s something refreshing about someone who knows his universe and just gets on with, creating new legends and character back stories in the process.
It all has some topical bearing but don’t let that stop you from fastening your seat belts for the ride across unforgiving desert landscapes and craggy canyons as those humans left to fend for themselves in a world of climate change and pandemics.
Survival of the fittest is the key with a few warlords overseeing the arid landscapes. This time around pride of place is given to the young Furiosa (played with gutsy aplomb by Anya Taylor-Joy taking over from Charlize Theron from Mad Max: Fury Road, and in an even younger incarnation.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga had its splashy world premiere at Cannes earlier today and, as we first reported on SFFGazette.com, the first reviews are now in for George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road prequel.
The movie received a 7-minute standing ovation in France and, as we write this, it sits at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. While not a perfect score, the consensus is clearly incredibly positive overall, with the action, visuals, and cast - led by Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth - all receiving praise.
In fact, it appears Furiosa only falls short in the eyes of some because it didn't live up to their lofty expectations.
Overall, it's looking like Miller has another winner on his hands, and providing those all-important box office numbers are good, then we're sure the filmmaker's plans for yet another Mad Max prequel (focusing on the title character) will come to fruition.

Furiosa: A Max Max Saga had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, nearly a decade after the debut of Mad Max: Fury Road at the same festival. The first reviews for Furiosa have begun pouring in, and while they’re just as full of praise as those first reactions, it doesn’t sound like it reaches the heights of Fury Road.
Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman said that while Furiosa contains “a handful of awesome action moments,” the action doesn’t take center stage in the same way it did in Fury Road. “The most important thing to say about ‘Furiosa,’ however, is that what it all adds up to is a movie that can be darkly bedazzling, and that will be embraced and defended in a dozen passionate ways — but it’s one that, to me, falls very short of being a ‘Mad Max’ home run,” Gleiberman wrote.

The audience at the world premiere of the director’s prequel “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” went wild for his latest high-octane action film, showering the movie with an enthusiastic six-minute standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night.
Taylor-Joy blew kisses into the camera as the clapping continued, performing a theatrical bow. Hemsworth looked teary-eyed at the rapturous response.
“We worked very hard on this film, and it’ll be very interesting to see what you make of it,” Miller said briefly, taking a microphone to address the crowd. “Thank you for having us.”

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the fifth installment in George Miller’s celebrated action franchise, had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night and was greeted with a seven-minute standing ovation in the Grand Lumiere Theatre as Miller and members of his cast, including stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, looked on.
Furiosa, a $168 million film that Warner Bros. will release in the U.S. on May 24, comes nine years to the month after the most recent prior installment of the franchise, Mad Max: Fury Road, which starred Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy, and 45 years after Miller’s original Mad Max film became the most profitable film of all time to that point (grossing $100 million on a $350,000 budget).
Anticipation for Furiosa, a prequel set more than a decade before Fury Road, has been through the roof given that Fury Road received rave reviews (it has a...

Taylor-Joy makes a fantastic action heroine, facing down a hilariously evil Chris Hemsworth in signature high-speed fights
‘My childhood! My mother! I want them back!” With this howl of anguish, young Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, sets the tone of vengeful rage that runs through George Miller’s immersive, spectacular prequel to his Mad Max reboot from 2015. Once again, there are the crazily colossal and weird convoy-action sequences which fuse the notion of “chase” and “violent combat” into a series of delirious high-velocity contests between motorbikes, 18-wheelers and armed parascenders all attacking and shooting at each other while fanatically zooming in the same direction. The vehicles themselves are what makes the Mad Max movies so very strange. Many films are called “surreal”, but these strange, ritualistic gladiator-vehicle displays in the reddish-brown emptiness really do look like something by Giorgio de Chirico or Max Ernst.
