- DirectorAndrei TarkovskyStarsErland JosephsonSusan FleetwoodAllan EdwallAt the dawn of World War III, a man searches for a way to restore peace to the world and finds he must give something in return.Confusing. Not a strong presentation of the story. Dialogue heavy. Very theatrical. Lots of thing expected to be accepted as it is but they are very naive. For example Alexander hiding, his wife nervous break down, people around reactions not aligned with any normal human reactions. Ambulance came from nowhere, he is running around funny. he sacrificed just a house, not a big deal. His sacrifice is after not before solution. After the fact no one is mentioning nuclear apocalypse. We are supposed just to expect that Maria is witch without any reason or proof. Comical at the moments.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsRyan O'NealMarisa BerensonPatrick MageeAn Irish rogue wins the heart of a rich widow and assumes her dead husband's aristocratic position in 18th-century England.Incredible cinematography and set design. Interesting story and atmosphere. Unnecessary slow to the point that affects the quality of the film.
- DirectorGaspar NoéStarsMonica BellucciVincent CasselAlbert DupontelEvents over the course of one traumatic night in Paris unfold in reverse-chronological order as the beautiful Alex is brutally raped and beaten by a stranger in an underpass tunnel.Excellent. Interesting concept, inspired my Memento, the story old in reverse. I cannot shake the idea what would happen if story is told half in reverse and half forward. If reverse part ends when she is the ambulance and next scene is what is now the last. In this configuration the movie would end with the rape.
- DirectorAbbas KiarostamiStarsBabek Ahmed PoorAhmed Ahmed PoorKhodabakhsh DefaeiEight-year-old Ahmed has mistakenly taken his friend Mohammad's notebook. He wants to return it, or else his friend will be expelled from school. The boy determinedly sets out to find Mohammad's home in the neighbouring village.Beautiful, gentle movie. Simple but powerful story with the truthful and realistic atmosphere
- DirectorJean-Luc GodardStarsJean-Paul BelmondoJean SebergVan DoudeA small-time crook, hunted by the authorities for a car theft and the murder of a police officer, attempts to persuade a hip American journalism student to run away with him to Italy.Energy. Engaging. Philosophical. Great.
- DirectorRobin LutzStarsDonald CoxeterGeorge EscherJan EscherFeature documentary about the life and work of MC Escher.Informative. Weird VO voice.
- DirectorBilly WilderStarsWilliam HoldenGloria SwansonErich von StroheimA screenwriter develops a dangerous relationship with a faded film star determined to make a triumphant return.Great movie. Critical of Hollywood
- DirectorKiyoshi KurosawaStarsYû AoiIssei TakahashiMasahiro HigashideA Japanese merchant who leaves his wife behind in order to travel to Manchuria, where he witnesses an act of barbarism. His subsequent actions cause misunderstanding, jealousy and legal problems for his wife.Naive. Unloved wife in love, lied and sacrificed by her husband. They’re is also cliche of a childhood friend who is an investigative office. Their and especially wife’s acting and reactions very weird. The best thing is the conclusion explained by the text at the end. Maybe all of this was a great plan for them to be together but that is stupid.
- DirectorLouis MalleStarsCatherine DemongeotPhilippe NoiretHubert DeschampsWith her mother away for the weekend, a brash and precocious ten-year-old country girl sets out to explore Paris during a Métro strike under her uncle's not-so-watchful eye. But can a little girl cause so much chaos in the city centre?Amazing, funny, innovative, smart, surreal. Scene where they are passing the same building all the time is great.
- DirectorJane CampionStarsBenedict CumberbatchKirsten DunstJesse PlemonsCharismatic rancher Phil Burbank inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother brings home a new wife and her son, Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love.Good one. Great atmosphere and characters.
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsZoë KravitzByron BowersRita WilsonAn agoraphobic Seattle tech worker uncovers evidence of a crime.Absolutely terrible. It would be bad even for the film student. Every possible cliché was available. So stupid. Acting except Zoe was like in a bad soap opera. Unbelievable.
- DirectorAbbas KiarostamiStarsHomayoun ErshadiAbdolhosein BagheriAfshin Khorshid BakhtiariAn Iranian man drives his car in search of someone who will quietly bury him under a cherry tree after he commits suicide. He found the most complicated and weirdest way to acomplish his goal and find someone who will bury him. Unconvincing premise and story. Misleading narrative when he ask them to hep him tat is so obvious but somehow not weird to the main protagonist. Ending is different and so wide open but without any sense or direction and ends up being some artsy tryout.
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsBradley CooperCate BlanchettToni ColletteA grifter working his way up from low-ranking carnival worker to lauded psychic medium matches wits with a psychologist bent on exposing him.Shallow characters. Second part is decent. Too many stars.
- DirectorDanis TanovicStarsBranko DjuricRene BitorajacFilip SovagovicBosnia and Herzegovina during 1993 at the time of the heaviest fighting between the two warring sides. Two soldiers from opposing sides in the conflict, Nino and Ciki, become trapped in no man's land, whilst a third soldier becomes a living booby trap.Shallow and non impressive. Situational symbolism. I agree with critic of the international community
- DirectorJulia DucournauStarsVincent LindonAgathe RousselleGarance MarillierFollowing a series of unexplained crimes, a father is reunited with the son who has been missing for ten years.Weird but interesting. Well done. Why her scar is not on the wanted poster? Hard parroting firemen are little bit unintentionally funny. The best thing is fathers acceptance and longing for the long lost son.
- DirectorIngmar BergmanStarsHarriet AnderssonGunnar BjörnstrandMax von SydowRecently released from a mental hospital, Karin rejoins her emotionally disconnected family in their island home, only to slip from reality as she begins to believe she is being visited by God.Decent premise. Very theatrical acting which is sometimes distracting as their actions an reactions are weird and comes from nowhere. She Karin is sometimes very lucid and rational for the crazy person. The longing and the search for the answer is what makes this move decent.
- DirectorMaggie GyllenhaalStarsOlivia ColmanJessie BuckleyDakota JohnsonA woman's beach vacation takes a dark turn when she begins to confront the troubles of her past.Intriguing and mysterious to the end. Moms conflict with feelings towy her life and kids. She loves them but also hates them as they changed her life. She is honest in her selfishness. She stole the doll as punishment of the little girl as she recognizes girls mom struggle to be similar to hers.
- DirectorPeter WeirStarsJim CarreyEd HarrisLaura LinneyAn insurance salesman discovers his whole life is actually a reality TV show.Just terrible. So many basic inconsistencies so it is just stupid. The idea is great but story and way it was made very childish
- DirectorPablo LarraínStarsKristen StewartTimothy SpallSally HawkinsDiana Spencer, struggling with mental-health problems during her Christmas holidays with the Royal Family at their Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England, decides to end her decade-long marriage to Prince Charles.Interesting expressionistic portrait which is a bit to expressionistic so ends up being too cold and too removed from reality so it minimizes powerful narrative.
- DirectorPeter BogdanovichStarsRyan O'NealTatum O'NealMadeline KahnDuring the Great Depression, a con man finds himself saddled with a young girl who may or may not be his daughter, and the two forge an unlikely partnership.Beuty. Such an easy storytelling execution, beautifully developed and always on target characters. Smooth ride.
- DirectorPeter BogdanovichStarsTimothy BottomsJeff BridgesCybill ShepherdIn 1951, a group of high schoolers come of age in a bleak, isolated, atrophied North Texas town that is slowly dying, both culturally and economically.Lack of character development. Not good and smooth as Paper Moon. I like opening and ending shot (same but reversed)
- DirectorBenny SafdieJosh SafdieStarsArielle HolmesCaleb Landry JonesBuddy DuressA young woman struggles to reconcile her love for her boyfriend and for heroin, as she finds out that suicide is the only way for her boyfriend to forgive her for her misdeed.Raw and real. Dialogues are banal but makes the story authentic. At the end it feels documentarian be but it is pretty flat. Music is weird as in their all movies.
- DirectorQuentin DupieuxStarsJack PlotnickTodd GiebenhainEric JudorDolph Springer wakes up one morning to realize he has lost the love of his life, his dog, Paul. During his quest to get Paul (and his life) back, Dolph radically changes the lives of others -- risking his sanity all the while. One of the weird cinema ones. Yorgimos light. Some nice surreal and bizarre scenes but overall there was nothing to hold it together, so it ended up pretty shallow. Deeper meaning is elusive.
- DirectorRyûsuke HamaguchiStarsHidetoshi NishijimaTôko MiuraReika KirishimaA renowned stage actor and director learns to cope with a big personal loss when he receives an offer to direct a production of Uncle Vanya in Hiroshima.Wonderful. Great characters that we care for. Layers in story(like continuation of the story by lover). Many small life details that just happens without explanation which is not needed (canceled flight, driver same age as his daughter,
- DirectorKogonadaStarsColin FarrellJodie Turner-SmithMalea Emma TjandrawidjajaIn a near future, a family reckons with questions of love, connection, and loss after their A.I. helper unexpectedly breaks down.Very nice. Mellow Blade Runner. Meditation about past life’s, memories and grief. Techno sapiens. There is no something without nothing.
