- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsClint EastwoodEli WallachLee Van CleefA bounty hunting scam joins two men in an uneasy alliance against a third in a race to find a fortune in gold buried in a remote cemetery.Even though this is technically the third film in the Dollars Trilogy, it's still my favorite, for its influence on other Westerns and just for pure entertainment purposes
- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsClint EastwoodGene HackmanMorgan FreemanRetired Old West gunslinger William Munny reluctantly takes on one last job, with the help of his old partner Ned Logan and a young man, The "Schofield Kid."SPOILERS
The tortured soul of a reformed killer eventually is forced to regress and slaughter a town's law enforcement for killing his innocent friend. This is a film without clear "good" or "bad" guys, and constantly questions the perceptions we (as an audience) have of the cast. English Bob is discredited, Ned no longer is able to pull the trigger, the boy is haunted by his first and only kill despite his braggadocio, and Will Munny can only regain his battlefield competence after succumbing to alcohol once again. A beautiful film.
Watched February 2nd, 2019 - DirectorClint EastwoodStarsClint EastwoodSondra LockeChief Dan GeorgeMissouri farmer Josey Wales joins a Confederate guerrilla unit and winds up on the run from the Union soldiers who murdered his family.A movie that had actual indigenous actors, a solid revenge premise and an interesting take on the Western formula (by incorporating a surprising amount of humor into the scenes) made this a treat to watch. Highly recommended for one of the lines early in the movie, "Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining"
Watched July 24, 2021 with family - DirectorSam PeckinpahStarsWilliam HoldenErnest BorgnineRobert RyanAn aging group of outlaws look for one last big score as the "traditional" American West is disappearing around them. The final shootout scene in this is so brutal that it's a classic.
Rewatched, 5/3/19: Considering there are no real "heroes" in this movie, it was interesting to be rooting for a band of outlaws that gradually found a moral compass. Stellar acting and iconic shootouts - DirectorMel BrooksStarsCleavon LittleGene WilderSlim PickensIn order to ruin a western town, a corrupt politician appoints a black Sheriff, who promptly becomes his most formidable adversary. This could arguably go in "Comedy" or "Lewd Comedy", but I figured it belongs in Western more than anywhere else. One of the funniest movies I've ever seen, though it has been some time since I last saw it; I'd imagine it holds up
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJamie FoxxChristoph WaltzLeonardo DiCaprioWith the help of a German bounty-hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner in Mississippi.Christoph Waltz was fantastic in this, and even though it borders on overly long or gratuitously violent, it really is a solid neo-Western

Written 4/8/19 - DirectorEthan CoenJoel CoenStarsTim Blake NelsonWillie WatsonClancy BrownSix tales of life and violence in the Old West, following a singing gunslinger, a bank robber, a traveling impresario, an elderly prospector, a wagon train, and a perverse pair of bounty hunters.I thought the first two stories were by far the weakest, but I was then pleasantly surprised with the bleak nature of their follow-ups. "Meal Ticket" was beautifully told with very little dialogue, "All Gold Canyon" had beautiful scenery and a satisfying ending, "the Girl with the Rattle" was a touching romance that hit heavy emotional beats, and "The Mortal Remains" was an enthralling dialogue piece that could be interpreted as an allegory for Death. The latter half of the film saved it, but there were some great shots throughout.
Watched in multiple sittings, completed January 18th, 2019 - DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsSamuel L. JacksonKurt RussellJennifer Jason LeighIn the dead of a Wyoming winter, a bounty hunter and his prisoner find shelter in a cabin currently inhabited by a collection of nefarious characters.I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery aspect and the layout of the plot, but I don't think many of the characters were sufficiently developed (they were characterized well and felt unique, but the gang itself seemed a bit out of nowhere for me). Nonetheless, the soundtrack was great and the scenery was beautiful.
Watched in two sittings, November 1st-2nd, 2017, with friends - DirectorBurt KennedyStarsJames GarnerJoan HackettWalter BrennanIn the old west, a man becomes a Sheriff just for the pay, figuring he can decamp if things get tough. In the end, he uses ingenuity instead. This is also a Comedy, but pretty hilarious in its own right. I have a slight preference for this over Support Your Local Gunfighter because I seem to remember this one more, but they're both solid times
- DirectorTaylor SheridanStarsElizabeth OlsenJeremy RennerGraham GreeneA wildlife officer, who is haunted by a tragedy that happened because of him, teams up with an FBI agent in solving a murder of a young woman on a Wyoming Native American reservation and hopes to get redemption from his past regrets.A neo-Western, included here due to its focus on rural life/life on a reservation. While a bit formulaic in its approach to characters, I appreciated the quasi-call-to-action presented in the end of the film (no one tracks missing indigenous women, leading to hopes that an agency will). A satisfying conclusion all things considered
Watched May 21st, 2019 - DirectorKevin CostnerStarsKevin CostnerMary McDonnellGraham GreeneLieutenant John Dunbar, assigned to a remote western Civil War outpost, finds himself engaging with a neighbouring Sioux settlement, causing him to question his own purpose.Though it bordered on "white savior" territory, I thought the gradually developing relationship between Dunbar and the Sioux was both believable and heartwarming. I appreciated that there was extensive Lakota dialogue (though it allegedly was used incorrectly at times, according to Wikipedia). Overall a pleasant watch
Watched February 9th, 2019 - DirectorEthan CoenJoel CoenStarsJeff BridgesMatt DamonHailee SteinfeldA stubborn teenager enlists the help of a tough U.S. Marshal to track down her father's murderer.I liked the acting and the scenery shots, but the plot never really "picked up" as I had anticipated. The gray morality of the marshals and the bandits was appreciated, but I was somehow left wanting more by the end of the film. Still a fun watch though
Watched January 20th, 2020 - DirectorSergio LeoneStarsHenry FondaCharles BronsonClaudia CardinaleA mysterious stranger with a harmonica joins forces with a notorious desperado to protect a beautiful widow from a ruthless assassin working for the railroad.Excruciatingly slow but I liked the leitmotif soundtracks and somber atmosphere. Nice performances from all involved.
Watched December 7th, 2019 - DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsLeonardo DiCaprioTom HardyWill PoulterA frontiersman on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team.I'd call this more of a neo-Western despite its 1800s setting, so I included it here. While I was taking with Lubezki's cinematography and Innaritu's direction, I was somehow left wanting more at the end of the film, despite its staggering runtime. Beautifully shot and with great performances from all involved, but I'm not necessarily eager to watch it again
Watched October 20th, 2019 - DirectorArthur PennStarsDustin HoffmanFaye DunawayChief Dan GeorgeJack Crabb, looking back from extreme old age, tells of his life being raised by Native Americans and fighting with General Custer.Hoffman was decent in this and I liked the recurrence of several major players, but after a certain point I expected everything to tie together into a big finale, and I was underwhelmed with the Battle of Little Big Horn. The ending shot was poignant but I was wanting more
Watched January 25th, 2020 - DirectorJohn SturgesStarsYul BrynnerSteve McQueenCharles BronsonSeven gunfighters are hired by Mexican peasants to liberate their village from oppressive bandits.I really liked the cast in this, and it did a decent job at recreating "Seven Samurai" with a Western twist
- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsDenzel WashingtonChris PrattEthan HawkeSeven gunmen from a variety of backgrounds are brought together by a vengeful young widow to protect her town from the private army of a destructive industrialist. While I did appreciate the multiculturality in this movie, it seemed a bit shoehorned in. I appreciated that every character had more easily identifiable motivations for joining, however, and I thought that Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington's characters were very solid.
Watched March 28th, 2020 with family - DirectorDon SiegelStarsClint EastwoodShirley MacLaineManolo FábregasWhen a former Civil War soldier saves a nun from a gang of bandits, they team up to help the Mexicans in their war against the French. This was pretty provocative for young me, but it was also a good film. Probably my favorite Eastwood Western that isn't in the Dollars trilogy
- DirectorBurt KennedyStarsJames GarnerSuzanne PleshetteJack ElamA con artist arrives in a mining town controlled by two competing companies. Both companies think he's a famous gunfighter and try to hire him to drive the other out of town. This is another fantastic comedy with a Western background, but I don't have much to add beyond what I said for its prequel
Written 4/8/19 - DirectorSergio LeoneStarsClint EastwoodGian Maria VolontèMarianne KochA wandering gunfighter plays two rival families against each other in a town torn apart by greed, pride, and revenge.I don't remember this much, but it was gritty and interesting for young me, and it eventually spawned The Good, Bad and the Ugly, so I can't hate on it much
- DirectorGeorge StevensStarsAlan LaddJean ArthurVan HeflinAn ex-gunfighter defends homesteaders in 1889 Wyoming.Though I think the plotline of failing to escape one's gunslinger past was handled better in Eastwood's "Unforgiven", this was a solid plotline with great scenery shots. The child actor definitely set a Guinness World Record for how often he said "Shane" or "Bang!"
Watched October 19th, 2019 - DirectorSergio LeoneStarsClint EastwoodLee Van CleefGian Maria VolontèTwo bounty hunters with the same intentions team up to track down a gang of outlaws led by a psychotic Mexican bandit, who is plotting an audacious bank robbery.I remember this being entertaining, but not much else. Maybe ranked too high, I'm not sure
- DirectorRaoul WalshStarsErrol FlynnOlivia de HavillandArthur KennedyA highly fictionalized account of the life of George Armstrong Custer from his arrival at West Point in 1857 to his death at the battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876.Watched at some family gathering while waiting for food. It made Custer look like a hero and not completely incompetent, so that was interesting at least
- DirectorJoseph M. NewmanStarsTyrone PowerCameron MitchellThomas GomezIn 1876, a Canadian North West Mounted Police Constable must obtain the release of white hostages captured by the Cree tribes that are raiding Montana from their Canadian reservation.I only like this as much as I do because of one scene in particular: a man gets shot down from a tree and they literally show him prepping for a jump and then "falling". Other than that, I don't remember much
- DirectorJ. Lee ThompsonStarsCharles BronsonJack WardenWill SampsonAt the closing of 1874 a haunted, dying Wild Bill Hickok teams up with a grieving Crazy Horse to hunt a murderous albino buffalo.I understand it was the 70s, but for how much build up the film had, I was thoroughly disappointed by the mechanic buffalo. Other than that, the plot was decent but dragged on a bit from what I remember
