- DirectorJ.A. BayonaStarsNaomi WattsEwan McGregorTom HollandThe story of a tourist family in Thailand caught in the destruction and chaotic aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.Nice one about the disaster in India. I'm pretty sure that Hollywood took some liberties, but the drama of the family involved here was very touching. Evan MacGregor and Naomi Watts joined together again in a movie and I was glad they did, I remember to see them in Stay in 2005 and like it very much.
- DirectorRich MooreStarsJohn C. ReillyJack McBrayerJane LynchA video game villain wants to be a hero and sets out to fulfill his dream, but his quest brings havoc to the whole arcade where he lives.I have only one thing to say: BEST VIDEOGAME MOVIE EVER MADE, period!! Go watch it!
- DirectorAng LeeStarsSuraj SharmaIrrfan KhanAdil HussainA young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger.Brilliant!!! Just brilliant!! At the end I just wanted to applaud as loud as I could!! Oscar, keep an eye on that one!!
- DirectorChristopher McQuarrieStarsTom CruiseRosamund PikeRichard JenkinsA homicide investigator digs deeper into a case involving a trained military sniper responsible for a mass shooting.Nice movie with Tom Cruise!! If you like police plots and private eye stories, then I strongly recommend this one!
- DirectorKim Jee-woonStarsArnold SchwarzeneggerForest WhitakerJohnny KnoxvilleThe leader of a drug cartel busts out of a courthouse and speeds to the Mexican border, where the only thing in his path is a sheriff and his inexperienced staff.Arnold Schwarzenegger is back baby!! What can I say, after Expendables 2, this return of Arnold in the leading roles was just awesome!!! I'll certainly want to add this killer to my collection of Arnold flicks after the DVD came out!! A salute also to Rodrigo Santoro that did a heck of a job in the movie and made my country very proud!! If you're missing the old-fashioned 80's action heroes, then this is for you!!! The sheriff is back in town!!!
- DirectorMichael HanekeStarsJean-Louis TrintignantEmmanuelle RivaIsabelle HuppertGeorges and Anne are an octogenarian couple. They are cultivated, retired music teachers. Their daughter, also a musician, lives in Britain with her family. One day, Anne has a stroke, and the couple's bond of love is severely tested. It's hard for me to even start drawing something in words. This movie shocks you, moves you and touches you all at the same time. It's love in it's purest form. As I watch, I see my grandma lying in her bed under the same conditions, and I cry hard, with the memory of that sweet and humble parent of mine that left me two years ago, it evokes on me a feeling of depression and heartbreak so strong that I feel like watching comedies the rest of the week to recover. This is not just a movie, it's an experience. I recommend it, but with caution. I watched on a Monday evening, don't do that! Try watching on a Friday or Saturday with some companion. Anyway, it's not an easy movie. It's an honest and sensible movie, but I don't feel like watching it again, I rather watch 2011 Intouchables all over again instead.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJamie FoxxChristoph WaltzLeonardo DiCaprioWith the help of a German bounty-hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner in Mississippi.Wow, what a western! I mean, really good! Don't get me wrong I'm still one of those that holds The Good, The Bad and The Ugly like THE ultimate western, for me no other western can be as good or better than Leone's masterpiece.
But Django Unchained definitely takes the cake like the best and most entertaining western of modern days. I've just watched the movie and I'm still overwhelmed by it! And you know what is the funny part? I'm not even a Tarantino fan! All I enjoyed from him until now was Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Bastards. Now Django just entered that list!
Highly recommended! Specially if you are, like me, a great fan of westerns! - DirectorElizabeth BanksSteven BrillSteve CarrStarsEmma StoneStephen MerchantRichard GereA series of interconnected short films follows a washed-up producer as he pitches insane story lines featuring some of the biggest stars in Hollywood.Geez! What have I just saw? This is bµllṩhit! Completely ridiculous and total nonsense! I don't believe it... Hugh Jackman in this movie?? How did they get Hugh Jackman for this?? And Richard Gere?? Halle Berry?? Naomi Watts... dear God, Naomi, how could you??
Seriously, this movie makes The Rocky Horror Picture Show looks like a normal picture, a sensible picture! What the fµ¢ƙ did the writers took to do this? Were they high or something?
I mean... seriously... a leprechaun? A guy with balls going down his chin?? Testicles? A woman who likes a dump? A homicidal animated cat? Where did you get this from?? What... who wrote this??? Really...???
Alas, some funny segments but lots and lots of bµllcrap surrounds the actual funny parts. Avoid it! - DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsDenzel WashingtonNadine VelazquezDon CheadleTroubling questions arise after airline pilot Whip Whitaker makes a miracle landing after a mid-air catastrophe.Wow!! Just wow!! Robert Zemeckis, Alan Silvestri, Steve Starkey, all of them, I know somehow you know these fellas! Well, they finally return here with Denzel Washington in a live action movie, and it's... AWESOME!! Really, one of the best performances from Denzel that I've ever seen in the drama genre.
I'm serious! Great story, wonderful performances, you just can't miss that one! It made me laugh, it made me cry a little, it put me on the edge of my seat... it's sheer brilliance! I strongly recommend it! - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsDaniel Day-LewisSally FieldDavid StrathairnAs the Civil War rages on, U.S President Abraham Lincoln struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield as he fights with many inside his own cabinet on his decision to emancipate the slaves.Great inspirational movie! Spielberg hit the spot and gives Day-Lewis his well deserved Oscar! Go watch it!
- DirectorJohn MooreStarsBruce WillisJai CourtneySebastian KochJohn McClane travels to Russia to help out his seemingly wayward son, Jack, only to discover that Jack is a CIA operative working undercover, causing the father and son to team up against underworld forces.I'm a long time Die Hard fan and I really think that the franchise will never go back to it's greatness from the original and classic trilogy. But at least I found, at first look, this movie a little better than Live Free or Die Hard. That's something. Now for the next one, guys, please, try to make a better one, because the clock is ticking, the age is... aging, I guess... and I still didn't see my friend John McClane the way he was in his prime, when he used to be ƒµckiɳ’ awesome, a little more human and trolling bad guys the way they deserved.
Yeah. Please, bring me back the "now I have a machine gun, hohoho" guy, I just love that guy! Still, nice action movie, but nothing really special. Oh yeah... thanks for not censoring the "Yippie-kai-yay ɱọțɦerƒµcker" this time! This isn't meant for kids, so please, back with the R ratings and leave your kids at home, goddammit!
And also, thanks for the Rolling Stones at the ending credits. Even if the movie was God-awful, Stones will always set things right! - DirectorTom HooperStarsHugh JackmanRussell CroweAnne HathawayIn 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after breaking parole, agrees to care for a factory worker's daughter. The decision changes their lives forever.Wonderful musical about the French Revolution! I never saw the Broadway version, but this movie adaptation of Victor Hugo's book really deserves credit! It's one of the best musicals I've seen in recent years since Sweeney Todd! Must watch!
- DirectorKirk DeMiccoChris SandersStarsNicolas CageRyan ReynoldsEmma StoneAfter their cave is destroyed, a caveman family must trek through an unfamiliar fantastical world with the help of an inventive boy.Believe me, I was almost choosing Broken City to see instead of this! Glad I changed in the last minute! This is Pixar level, highly entertaining, pleasing, funny, touching, beautiful! Beautiful to see the visuals and the emotive story! Worth every cent!
- DirectorWalter HillStarsSylvester StalloneJason MomoaChristian SlaterAfter watching their respective partners die, a New Orleans hitman and a Washington, D.C. detective form an alliance in order to bring down their common enemy.Well Sly, dude, it's been a long time that you was this good on a movie! Nice! It has action, humor, it has sex and gore, everything that you would expect from a great example of the action alpha male hero!! This one delivers!! Plus, it shows us great pictures from a younger Sly, and there you can look and remember "oh, look, it's Rambo!! Oh, there, it's Cobra!"
I'm really satisfied and glad that I saw it! Great one, Sly! Looking forward for your teaming up with Arnold next!! Oh yeah, one more thing: don't forget Jason Momoa on The Expendables 3!! Imagine how awesome it would be! - DirectorJoseph KosinskiStarsTom CruiseMorgan FreemanAndrea RiseboroughA veteran assigned to extract Earth's remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself.Jesus, what a hack: take the Wall-E plot made poorly, put a mix of The Dark Knight and Inception from Christopher Nolan as a soundtrack, with tiny bits of special sound effects from 2001 A Space Odyssey, steal concepts like Hal-9000 and the Monolith from 2001 again, Michael Bay it all the way (or you can also say, add some excrement to the mix) with famous actors like Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman to give it some credibility, render it all with astonishing special effects with unoriginal concepts and you have... Oblivion!
Seriously... not recommended! - DirectorMarcos BernsteinStarsJoão GuilhermeJosé de AbreuCaco CioclerMy Sweet Orange Tree begins with José Mauro de Vasconcelos (Caco Ciocler) receiving an edition of his finished novel. Then, the film starts to tell the story from the writer's memories, through flashbacks. Zezé (João Guilherme Avila), a boy of eight years who lives in Minas Gerais in a very humble house with his family, consisting of his father (Eduardo Dascar), an unemployed and alcoholic, and his mother (Fernanda Vianna), which works to support the home and his brother and sisters. Despite the lack of understanding, affection and the aggression suffered by from his father and school colleagues, the boy has a great skill for storytelling using his imagination. With financial difficulties, the family has to move. At the new home, Zezé finds an orange tree, which he talks everyday. However, for being extremely extrovert he got involved in several confusions. One of them, he tries to ride on the bumper of Manoel Valadares, the "Portuga" (José de Abreu), but is caught and spanked. The boy feels humiliated and wants revenge, however Valadares ends up understanding Zezé, which turns to share his world of fantasies, and a new friendship arises. This was a great experience! Brazilian writer José Mauro de Vasconcelos that wrote the 1968 classic is treated with respect and earns a beautiful and thoughtful experience in film. One of the greatest Brazilian movies that I ever saw. Worth checking out!
- DirectorShane BlackStarsRobert Downey Jr.Guy PearceGwyneth PaltrowWhen Tony Stark's world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution.Well, I finally saw Iron Man 3, the first big comic book superhero movie of the year. And how was it? Lisa Simpson feelings... Meh... Is it so bad? Well, no, definitely no. It was inconsistent. But I had some fun. It's like Superman III, unimpressive yet harmless. So my hopes of a real epic and impressive superhero movie this year still rests on Man of Steel's arms. It's up to Thor The Dark World now to save Marvel of an unimpressive year.
- DirectorBruno DumontStarsJuliette BinocheJessica ErreroRobert LeroyWinter, 1915. Confined by her family to an asylum in the South of France - where she will never sculpt again - the chronicle of Camille Claudel's reclusive life, as she waits for a visit from her brother, Paul Claudel.Well, that was a very uneasy experience for me. This story based on true facts brings the subject about freewill versus dogmas. It's a reflexive french flick that brings the discussion about wether religion affects art and creativity or not. What if you live an empty life trapped on a mental institution that will never let you create new things again? How about if dogmatic people cut your free will away and send it to the deepest circle of hell, trying to fill your mind every single day with dogmas and the way you should behave. What if you can't take that sorry little life anymore and are eager to escape, to create and think for yourself again, but they won't let you, and for that will to create and think for yourself they'll call you a crazy deranged person?
Sad, heh? The movie doesn't try to answer any question nor try to take sides, it only raises those questions. My position? As religious as you can be, nothing will ever replace your freedom of even deny the existence of God if you will. Not that I would do that, 'cause I have my beliefs myself, but there's no replacement for free will, no matter who you are or what do you believe.
Juliette Binoche's performance is strong and heartbreaking. Cinematography is wonderful and the slow pace of the movie gives you room to reflect about the matters exposed in it in a very contemplative way. Recommended. - DirectorNikolaj ArcelStarsAlicia VikanderMads MikkelsenMikkel Boe FølsgaardA young queen, who is married to an insane king, falls secretly in love with her physician - and together they start a revolution that changes a nation forever. One of the best European movies I saw in recent days. Based on true facts, it tells the story of a XVIII century decoy king who has a beautiful queen. But this queen is seduced by the king's german doctor. Now one of the main points of this german doctor is that he tries to bring his Enlightenment ideas to the Denmark kingdom. The plot is interesting, the story of adultery builds up the plot and the acting is just superb! Mads Mikkelsen couldn't shine propertly as Le Chiffre in Casino Royale, but here I think he flows his talents wonderfully. The other main protagonists are equally great, production values, excellent, I think this film holds huge chances to win an Oscar next year! Recommended!
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsChris PineZachary QuintoZoe SaldanaAfter the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.Evening, commanders of the IMDB star fleet! I'm just logging in to let everyone know as I still acknowledge myself in astonishment that Into Darkness is the most daring, the most bold, the most well crafted and well developed, one of the best things that I had the pleasure to witness in the Star Trek franchise, particularly the movie series, since their second endeavor, The Wrath of Kahn! I'm totally not joking and I'm totally not spoiling the details for you, as you'll have a bunch of great surprises to check, so don't waste any time and check it right now! Live long and prosper! That is all. Logging out.
- DirectorTodd PhillipsStarsBradley CooperZach GalifianakisEd HelmsWhen one of their own is kidnapped by an angry gangster, the Wolf Pack must track down Mr. Chow, who has escaped from prison and is on the run.Sorry guys! Unfunny! For more details, see my review, but to be short: it tries to be something it's not and after the credits it remembers what it should have been. That's it. Disappointing.
- DirectorDan ScanlonStarsBilly CrystalJohn GoodmanSteve BuscemiA look at the relationship between Mike Wazowski and James P. "Sully" Sullivan during their days at Monsters University, when they weren't necessarily the best of friends.Great prequel to the 2001 movie. It took even longer for Pixar to make some other Monsters related stuff than Toy Story and Cars, but it was worth every cent of the admission! The story is strong, the new characters likable, it's a well worth checking out movie for both kids and adults! Looks like Pixar learned from their mistakes in Cars 2. Go watch it! Oh, and the opening animation, The Blue Umbrella, lovely! Well done again, Pixar!
- DirectorAndré PellenzStarsPaulo GustavoRodrigo PandolfoMariana XavierAfter another spat with her kids, Dona Hermínia decides to take some time off from them and hides away in her aunt's house, where she reminisces about her kids in an age when they still needed her. It's been a while since I last saw a Brazilian comedy. The fact is that most of comedies in my country just don't add up, they are just generic Globo TV "quality" formulas that are simply awful!! By word of mouth I decided to ignore my skepticism, take a deep breath and check this one out, and guess what? I had fun! I mean... I didn't watch the most brilliant comedy of my life, and it's still pretty generic, but it was better than most comedies that comes out in Brazil! There are flaws, and situations that just makes you cringe, but in general terms, I laughed, I had a good time with it.
It's the kind of movie that illustrates the everyday problematic Brazilian family, there are stereotypes of Brazilian people in every direction you look at. So yeah, that's why I let that one pass. I could easily identify some very regular situations that I already seen around in my city with other families and I have to admit, the characters were mostly very likable, specially the mother! So yeah, it's a nice Brazilian comedy. Again, you won't have the laugher of your life, but you'll still have a good time with your friends and relatives. - DirectorBaz LuhrmannStarsLeonardo DiCaprioCarey MulliganJoel EdgertonA writer and wall street trader, Nick Carraway, finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his mysterious millionaire neighbor, Jay Gatsby, amid the riotous parties of the Jazz Age.Wow!! When I saw that it was a movie from the director of Moulin Rouge, I got myself wondering... "well, that means that the movie will have mesmerizing visuals to compensate for the weak plot, right?" WRONG! I never read the book neither saw the 1970's version, but this one nailed it! Great direction work, strong and intriguing script and beautiful cinematography with a great score makes this one a must watch!
- DirectorKleber Mendonça FilhoStarsAna Rita GurgelCaio AlmeidaMaeve JinkingsThe lives of the residents of a Brazilian apartment building and the security guards who get the job guarding the surrounding streets.Wow!! What an experience! Finally, something different in Brazilian cinema. Emulating something from filmmakers like John Carpenter and Terence Malick with bits of his own, Mendonça made a contemplative and powerful movie that shows us that, even the bad situations can't make people give up from their lives because they'll always try to make the best of what they got.
Fantastic cinematography with shots from everyday situations made in a very disturbing and oppressive fashion. The main objective of Mendonça here is to take the everyday life of people and make it more interesting. This is a wonderful and thoughtful experience that worth every cent! I saw it and got myself trying to solve the puzzle while having some thought about my own life.
A wonderful piece of Brazilian cinema with a slow, yet great development and interesting situations. Must watch!
