- DirectorLarisa ShepitkoStarsMayya BulgakovaSergey NikonenkoZhanna BolotovaA fascinating and human portrayal of a once-famous fighter pilot and loyal Stalinist named Nadezhda Petrovna. Now a 41-year-old provincial schoolmistress, she has so internalized the military ideas of service and obedience that she cannot adjust to life in peacetime.
- DirectorLarisa ShepitkoStarsBoris PlotnikovVladimir GostyukhinSergey YakovlevTwo Soviet partisans on a mission to gather food contend with the winter cold, the occupying Germans, and their own psyches.

The Soviet high command unleashes an operation to protect the Mishkova River to avoid that about four hundred tanks join Paulus' army. The Soviet artillery soldiers protect their position with their lives in a bloodshed with few survivors.More tanks than have probably been in any other movie.
- DirectorAndrey KonchalovskiyStarsNikita MikhalkovVitali SolominSergey ShakurovIn the Siberian wilderness in the village of Yelan, two families live, who have long been at war with each other: the «kulaks» of Solomina and the «poor people» of Ustyuzhanina.Great film. Make sure and make time to sit through it without stopping, at least once.

Their destinies develop exactly as the character of each of the girls suggests.Great movie.
- DirectorElem KlimovStarsAleksey PetrenkoAnatoliy RomashinVelta LineDetails the life of the Russian monk Rasputin. The film shows his rise to power and how it corrupted him. His sexual perversions and madness ultimatly leads to his gruesome assasination. Not particularly accurate historically, and the narrative is a little too episodic, but I think a lot of that probably had to do with the censors. For strange and unhinged artsy-ness, it's a winner.
- DirectorOles YanchukStarsGalina SulimaGeorgiy MorozyukAleksey GorbunovThis film looks at the artificial famine of 1932-33 in Ukraine through the eyes of a single family. The famine, which killed millions of people, was the result of a Soviet policy intended to punish Ukrainians for opposing the collectivization of their farms. It's a Ukrainian film, but I thought it should go on here nonetheless.
- DirectorPavel ChukhrayStarsVladimir MashkovYekaterina RednikovaMikhail FilipchukA woman meets a man who isn't the right man for her - but she hasn't realised it yet...I first heard of this movie twenty years ago, and after a lot of searching I found it. Then I found out that the international ending and the Russian ending weren't the same, so I put off watching it. After a random fit of annoyance, I decided to watch the shorter version, which was still great. But it still bugged me that I couldn't see the long one. I even looked on Ozon (the Russian Amazon) to see if they had the long version, which they didn't. After a lot of digging, I found the original ending online, and while my Russian isn't that good, I could follow the ending. It was a good movie and I enjoyed it a lot, but I can't believe how hard it was for me to find any version of it, let alone the Russian ending.
