Summary: Emma goes to Beverly Hills
I am a devoted Jane Austen admirer. I have read all of her books several times. I have seen all the adaptations of her books at least twice - and some like Emma - many times.
When Clueless came out I did not go to see it. The very idea of "Emma Goes to Beverly Hills and Becomes a Feckless Teenager" appalling, to say the least. I read the favorable reviews and I still looked upon it with scorn.
Then one day, lo and behold, there was nothing on TV but sports, junk or things I had already seen too many times, with one exception, Clueless.
After the movie was over, I got out my copy of Emma and read it twice. Then I rented the Gwyneth Paltrow and the BBC versions and watched them twice. Then I rented Clueless and watched it twice. I realized that I owed Clueless a very large apology. 0 Alicia Silverstone's Cher is Emma - gone to Beverly Hills - but no more feckless than Emma herself. Cher is pretty and rich and charming and smart. Like the original Emma, Cher has a father who dotes upon her and depends upon her to manage his household. Her early autonomy and her lack of real world experience leads her to the unfortunate conclusion that she is always right. And therein hangs the tale.
So, if you love Jane Austen as I do, please do not be afraid to see Clueless. It is not a desecration of Emma; it is a migration of Emma's soul from the streets of an English village to the palm trees and glitz of Rodeo Drive.

Summary: Magical
I have read that James Stewart considered Elwood P. Dowd his most personally significant role. In a career that spanned decades and included such great works at It's a Wonderful Life and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, choosing Harvey's friend, Elwood, as his personal favorite says something about rather powerful about Mr. Stewart and Mr. Dowd.
James Stewart was a down to earth, decent man whose personal life was as honorable as the lives of George Bailey and Jefferson Smith - but he admired Elwood P. Dowd, an alcoholic dreamer with an invisible giant white rabbit as his best friend. Not what you would expect of a man who piloted B-17's and led giant raids over Germany in WWII.
Elwood's attraction for us is perhaps what attracted him so much to James Stewart. Elwood is happy with himself and his life and even more importantly, he makes others happy with their lives. That is the great magic of Elwood and Harvey: they make others happy and they bring peace and a measure of contentment to almost everyone who know them.
I have seen another version of Harvey with Art Carney and it was quite good, but lacked the sense of magic that is a benediction in this version of Harvey. In the Carney version, you can see Harvey - he is a giant white rabbit - and seeing Harvey takes much of the magic away. When you watch Jimmy Stewart, you never really know if Harvey is real or not. You know that Elwood thinks he is real and you know that Elwood's family thinks Elwood is crazy. After watching for a while, you don't really care if Harvey is real. Elwood is real and it is his belief in Harvey and what Harvey represents to him that endows him with such sweet and gentle charm. Harvey is his rejection of the harshness and materialism of the world.
Harvey is a charming, magical masterpiece of kindness and goodness that somehow never becomes maudlin. Elwood and Harvey do not feel sorry for themselves and they most certainly do not expect you to feel sorry for them either. If anything, Elwood feels sorry for the rest of the world and he does not understand how everyone can't see as clearly as he does. For in his world, we are all brothers who should love as generously and kindly as Mr. Stewart's Elwood P. Dowd.

Summary: Funny
Jumpin' Jack Flash made me laugh so hard I hurt. I know it got bad reviews but it is not a bad movie. It is a very good movie and very funny. It has one of the funniest sequences I have ever seen: from the time Terry is seen climbing up the side of the building wearing Cynthia's borrowed dress - through the paper shredder business - to the end of the sequence where Marty asks her if there is something wrong with the dress. If you have seen it, you know what I mean. If you haven't seen it please do. Rent the video rather than watching it on TV. The TV version is cut.

Summary: I laughed so hard it hurt
If you've ever had what you thought was a bad date, watch this movie and you will see a really, really bad date. It leaps from disaster to disaster and each one is funnier than the last. I especially enjoyed John Larroquette's performance as Kim Basinger's crazy ex boyfriend. Blind Date may never win any awards, but if you ever need a good belly laugh, watch it. You will not be disappointed.

Summary: The One and Only Mame
Sometimes you see a movie and you know that the actor or actress in it was born to play that part.
Clark Gable in Gone with the Wind
Bette Davis in All About Eve
Barbra Streisand in Hello, Dolly
Rosalind Russell in Auntie Mame
I love Russell and the parts she played. She was a liberated woman before the rest of the world knew what knew that women needed to be liberated.
But in Auntie Mame she reached her peak. Mame is so vibrant and alive. She flaunts every one of Mame's eccentricities without stepping over the line into caricature. She also brings alive Mame's decency, compassion and tolerance. When I watch it, I almost feel ashamed of myself for being such a stick in the mud.
I enjoyed the musical with Lucille Ball, but all the way through it - I wanted it to be Rosalind Russell playing the part. It takes very little imagination on my part to hear her singing the songs. Rosalind, you are "just sensational" as Mame.
