- In 1982 the festival first was organized within the frame of the Istanbul International Festival, during the summer, under the title "Film Week". The theme was limited to "Arts and Movies". In 1983 the event was realized as "Istanbul Filmdays", and took place throughout the Istanbul International Festival. When gained an identity as a separate activity in 1984 the event was shifted to the month of April. The international competition section finally was included in 1989 and the event renamed International Istanbul Film Festival.
- At the beginning of 1989 the festival has been recognized as "a competitive specialized festival" by FIAPF and was accredited as one of the 40 prime film festivals of the world.
