- In Genikan, a remote mountain village on the Merbabu slope (Central Java), a quiet community is facing change without understanding why it's happening. As a community of farmers who rely heavily on the traditional Javanese calendar to plant crops become puzzled by the dramatic change of seasons. In the rhythm of a slow visual journey THE LAND BENEATH THE FOG takes an intimate look at family relations in Genikan. Describing a life on the brink of vanishing, this documentary offers deep insights into' an invisible and disenfranchised society' which is struggling hard to maintain its existence. - Sixteen young scholars from India and Bangladesh (former East Pakistan) take part in the project "Inherited Memories" initiated by Goethe Institute, Kolkata and Dhaka in order to record the recollections of the third generation of the Partition survivors. At the same time, two granddaughters from Bangladesh and India embark on a journey to find their lost home that their grandparents had left during the holocaust of Partition. Through these academic and emotional journeys, the film relives the memories of Partition and tries to understand how multiple generations of Partition survivors perceive the complexities of identity, nationality and "home" in the truest sense.
