- The song "Dearest" by Ayumi Hamasaki carries themes of love, loss, and the longing for eternal happiness. In the first verse, the lyrics express a desire to discard everything that's not truly valuable and important. The speaker longs for a reality where they can easily let go of the cruelty and hardships of life. However, midst the harshness, they find solace and comfort in the image of someone they care deeply for. The person they envision brings them joy and is a source of strength during difficult times. The chorus reflects a wish for the subject's smiling face to remain constant until the day they fall into eternal sleep. It signifies the speaker's desire for the person they love to always be happy and for their smile to be uninterrupted. The second verse discusses the inherent sadness and impermanence that humans experience. It acknowledges that people are prone to forgetting and that life is fleeting. Despite this, the lyrics emphasize the importance of love and the need to give and receive it from those worth loving. It reflects a belief that love is a driving force in life and the motivation behind the speaker's actions. In the instrumental bridge, the song takes a momentary pause to convey emotions through the music without lyrics. In the final chorus, the lyrics reflect on the initial stages of the relationship, acknowledging that both individuals were clumsy and took a roundabout path toward finding each other. It suggests that they may have unintentionally hurt each other in the process. However, they have persevered and arrived at their current point together, despite the challenges they faced. The lyrics describe how emotions are fleeting and perfect beginnings don't always last, with the narrator feeling lost in a confusing and mysterious situation. The "four walls" represent the confinement and limitations that come with love and being in a relationship. The mirror being filled with the person they love represents how the object of affection is all they need to be content. The pre-chorus emphasizes the narrator's fascination and intrigue with their love interest, enjoying their presence even as they feel overpowered by them. The chorus repeats the refrain "love is four walls" as a reminder of the restrictions placed on them by their love. The bridge shows a desire to escape the confines of conventional love stories and have a "fantasy" with their partner. The song ends with a plea for their love interest to reveal more of themselves to the narrator, as they are entranced by their mysterious and beautiful qualities.
