- A brash young man-about-town is attracted to a Broadway actress, but her flirtatious ways turn him off and make him want to change his life. He takes a room in a quite boarding-house that caters to theatrical people. He soon meets Rose, a working girl who has just been fired because of a previous jail sentence, and decides to help her.
- A naive young man, raised poor in a small town, comes to New York City to make his fortune. Overwhelmed by the city's hustle and bustle, and entranced by the rich and sophisticated high-society types he comes into contact with, he eventually finds himself caught up in the city's seedy underworld.
- The story is that of the mysterious murder of John Argyle, a multi-millionaire, in the library of his home. Circumstances point toward Argyle's adopted daughter Mary, who is the beneficiary under his will, Argyle having quarreled with his son Bruce. Just as the case begins to look black for Mary, Asche Kayton, a great private detective, is called in by Bruce and takes hold of the investigation. His methods are scientific and swift and the trail leads to a den of counterfeiters, where, by use of the dictograph and other modern devices, the real murderer is run to his lair. Kayton falls in love with Mary, who is finally vindicated. Kayton's reward is the girl.
- Robert Hyde is a confirmed bachelor who has sworn never to marry. Not even the pleading of his two close friends, the pastor and the lawyer, will move him. But an automobile accident brings Clarice to his home and during her recovery, she and Robert fall in love. After their wedding, Clarice's happiness is marred by Robert's preoccupation with hunting and fishing. The pastor then advises her that she will never know real happiness until she has children. Shortly after this, Clarice's aunt, Mrs. Grosvenor, brings a large party of friends to the Hyde estate for a visit. They all plan to give a performance of William Shakespeare's Othello for charity, but the count annoys Robert by his lovemaking scenes with Clarice. After a startling dream in which Robert's Othello kills Clarice's Desdemona, Robert finds the count making advances in earnest, and throws him out. Robert then begins to pay more attention to his wife and soon Clarice finds herself pregnant and happy.
- Because her father has strict ideas about what clothing she should wear and with whom she should associate, Anna Hedder leaves home and takes up residence with two girl friends. She meets Madeline Wallace, whose father is extremely lenient, but he soon discovers that she is becoming too indiscriminate in her associates; Madeline rebels, and she is enticed to Anna's apartment by Reynolds, an old roué, while the girls are out. Anna and her friends return in time to save Madeline's reputation. Madeline, having learned her lesson, returns to her father; and Anna's father, having softened his attitude, persuades her to return home too.
- Mind, in the form of a college student, becomes infatuated with Body, a local barmaid, and neglects his studies, despite the warnings of his brother, Soul. Finally, however, he heeds Soul's advice and graduates to become a noted writer. Meanwhile, Soul becomes a minister and Body an adventuress. Body acquires four more lovers: a Champion Pugilist, a Musician, an Actor and a Banker, ruining and then discarding each one in turn. Eventually she enters Soul's church, where she realizes that her sinful mode of living can only lead to unhappiness. In trying to rescue Frail Sister, a white slave in the power of Slimy Thing, Body is shot and killed.
- A Jewish mother in New York finds herself at odds with her son's new wife, a pretty Gentile girl.
- During World War I, Dick Randall says goodbye to his mother and joins the troops in battle overseas. Dazed by the explosion of a shell, he wanders over the German lines and is hiding in a haystack when French peasant girl Corinne Frenaud discovers him. Convalescing in her mother's cottage, Dick falls in love with Corinne, and she proves her love by accompanying him across the American lines after a shell destroys the cottage. Corinne quickly becomes the favorite of Dick's regiment, but he is distracted from his jealousy by the idea of showering Berlin with pamphlets featuring a photo of Kaiser Wilhelm and the inscription "Wanted for Murder." With help from a pilot, Dick flies over Berlin and drops the photos, but the plane is shot on its way back to France. Corinne again rescues him just as the truce is declared, and later, Dick takes the brave woman to America as his bride.
- Young Kitty runs away from home to avoid marrying a man she doesn't love. Her car breaks down on a country road and she meets Robert, a young artist who has just been turned down by a woman he loved madly and is about to commit suicide by lying on the railroad tracks. He sees Kitty in trouble and decides to help her. They get the car running, but it runs out of gas in front of a farmhouse. The farmer, mistakenly believing that the two are married, has them share a bedroom for the night. The next morning Kitty's father shows up looking for her and discovers that she has "spent the night" with a stranger. Complications ensue.
