Nahir (2024)
What she said (did?)
No pun intended - I was not familiar with the case of Nahir - and apparently the movie may not be entirely truthful - at least according to some of the reviewers here. Since I have not followed the case nor read up on it, I can't compare the real life incidents and court hearings and what not, to what the movie portrays.
What I can say: powerhouse performance by the main actress who really gives it her all to show many sides to a troubled teenager. Motivations aside, it is never easy to play such a role which feels quite evil - is she though? Again, I can only judge (and no pun intended here either) from what we see in the movie ... and that does show a complex character ... and even more intriguing story behind it ... the truth shall set you free ... well does it? The end credits may suggest otherwise ... let's see.
Song of King Solomon (2011)
(Not) love(able)
No pun(s) intended - also considering the rating up to now (over 8), I doubt that anything I wrote in the summary line or in this text right here will make a difference to those who loved this. I am not taking anything away from them - I couldn't even if I tried (which again I am not). But I would not be myself, not true to who I am, if I didn't rate and review the way I feel.
I try to avoid giving ones, so there is that. But the very despicable main character would not be entirely undeserving of it. The women who are his (property) fear him - but his true love is about to reveal herself to him. The whole time (duration of the movie) we do hear singing - apparently the text of the story in hebrew as a different critic has stated.
You may be good with that or annoyed by it, I am just giving you the facts. The acting has ups and downs - the cinematography overall may be one of the better things - especially considering the very low budget this had.
Am I a sinner for not liking this? Maybe to some - but as I already stated, I would be a much bigger sinner if I lied to you - though that would go in line with the main character .. I reckon a broken character that can be saved is always a good thing ... but the way he is described, to me he seems a lost case ... but what do I know?
Made for Each Other (2009)
Cheating
Am I cheating with my "high" score for this? I doubt it - and I doubt it will make a difference - also no pun intended. Comedy is something that is ... well hard to rate and/or describe/review for others. Because what I may find super funny, someone else may find annoying and boring. So it is a "eye of the beholder" kind of thing.
That said, you have to like weird to like this. And it also does not hold back punches - other movies/comedies do play nice. But this starts off with a dream (not) come true ... and the weird world our main character lives in, where everyone is aware of his personal life ... this is heightened to a degree that is hard to describe.
Yes this is a movie - yes it is made very clear. Yes you may feel like it pictures relationship and the world in a funny light ... well hopefully you do ... and you may also feel it shows off some of your fantasies/dreams but also nightmares ... maybe both at the same time. Are you in love? What would you do for it? Again, this is meant to be light fun .. let it do its work ...
Protege Moi (2023)
You may need protection indeed
No pun intended - I understand that some really want to push this. I got love for independent and low budget movies. That said though and while I try to avoid using the 1 star rating ... I just couldn't avoid it in this case. And to think there are plans to make more ... well I reckon it can't be worse than this.
The previous reviewer already mentioned the really bad green screen effects this has - add to that the "acting", a weak script/dialog and so many other things that you have to just ignore ... or cherish I reckon? This has some horror icons (to some, Felissa Rose to name just one. The movie also has a lot of b....lood! And the other b of course ... as in (female) breasts. I doubt anyone watching this movie will have an issue with the nudity though ... it is a selling point.
Know what to expect and hopefully that means this is right up your alley ... and my and others ratings won't matter at all. I will be happy for you.
Tres Extraños (2020)
Not so strange after all
That's for the english title of the movie - so no pun intended. A little low budget movie that can work - and I have to admit, the twists and the dialog was quite nice. I have seen better thrillers (Loft and so forth to name just one that comes to mind), but this is well done overall - and may go directions you do not expect.
This begins with our two main characters enjoying their privacy .. but that is interrupted abruptly ... by someone who has quite a lot to say. The way this relationship(s) play out, is quite intriguing ... the tension can be felt. Decisions decisions and ... well more decisions to be made. How would you ... decide? Well done, even if maybe not as good as the 7 ratings up to this point may suggest. I would be surprised if many will watch this - free streaming or not.
Death Brings Roses (1982)
It also brings boredom
I mean I am sorry, but you have to cut this a lot of slack to be able to watch it. No pun intended, but this aged really bad. Though I can't imagine anyone falling for the quality of this back in the day - that said, I am not saying that no one will like it. Sometimes I also just dig stuff that is clearly wrong and bad - because it is fun to watch.
This never passes that threshold ... it stays beyond any redeemable factor. Be it acting (if you can call it that), the script/dialog or the direction. No offense, but I don't believe they are so good they only play bad - or act that way. Or wrote it that way ... to fool us or whatever. Anyway, not recommended at all.
The Watchers (2024)
The other Thing(s)
No pun intended - the saying goes that it is better to copy something that has already proven to work, rather than to make something up that is weak. Now Ishana, who apparently is a musician (did not know that beforehand, a friend told me after I watched the movie), tries to build on ... well not just her fathers legacy, but horror movie legacy.
You will be able to tell what I am talking about. The trailer was good not to reveal much (at least for me), that said, the movie is quite packed. And has a main character that we have to put ourselves into - there is not much we get there. We will get some backstory, that is somewhat important to the story and the resolution at the end.
This has bits and pieces, some fit perfectly others not so much. There is an entire mythology that this tries to build or force upon us. Doesn't really work entirely though - this feels like it needed a prequel (to better understand things) or we see this as a first part of more movies to come. Maybe then a revisit will make sense.
I doubt though that this will have the success that warrants those mechanisms to work and let her do more of these. There is suspense however and for a feature length debut this ain't half bad. And in line with her last name we will get a major twist towards the end. I did not see that one - thought a bit differently, but you can see it if you really think about it. Still the ending may feel like a let down ... taking the tension and resolving it in a very weird way ... Suspension of disbelief is always necessary (be it the Point of no return stuff not making sense, logically speaking), to hidden places, that just appear.
I have also not read the book, so not sure what they left in or rather what was left out and any differences ... a decent movie, but not a movie I would promote to those only watching a small amount of stuff ...
The Unusual Suspects (2021)
Mine Mine Mine
No pun intended and obviously the characters here are not supposed to be ... well obnoxious. Not as much as the seagulls I borrowed my summary headline from at least. Especially rich people are not a group most viewers will feel closely attached to. But they are people too - of course the show gives us the helpers - which is they eyes we watch most of it through.
And it has a lot of female power behind it. Miranda Otto may be the best known of the bunch, but all the cast is doing an amazing job. The show may be a bit longer than it needed to and if I got it right, something like this actually happened ... but just roll with it and suspend your disbelief. Interesting stuff - a bit like the Bling Ring, but a bit more sophisticated I reckon ... and "different" ...
Ghost Lab (2021)
Who you gonna call?
Apparently no one - if you make this movie, because ... well you figure, why not deal with this ourselves? And what could go wrong, right? Hey no pun(s) intended as always, though I am not sure how well thought out the main characters ... well I actually will not even talk about the sanity of their actions, especially after what they go through at the beginning of the movie.
But I reckon that is the fun of life and movies. The latter especially if you are able to suspend your disbelief. Because that is really necessary ... like a lot ... to say the least. Good effects and interesting twists (not too surprising mind you, but interesting) ... weird ending, at least for me, but might break the movie towards the finishing line for some I reckon - just a heads up.
Cha wu ci xin (2022)
Die me a river
I hope Justin Timberlake can forgive - on the other hand, maybe someone else will have done something with this title/phrase by the time you read this - and I do not even have to worry about telling you no pun intended ... until then, let's stay and stick with the thriller at hand. That has the inciting incident .... you guessed it right: at a river.
So if you like crime thrillers this already has some bonus or brownie points (or whatever is more to your liking). I have seen better movies than this of course, but this is at least decent, nominations can be an indicator for that too. Well shot and acted, the movie has a good pace and is well worth a watch - for those interested in a murder (mystery) story, that may be a bit different (though no entirely unpredictable)
A Mulher do Meu Marido (2019)
Status: it's complicated
No pun intended as always - life is not easy. Marriage is not easy either. I give this extra points for acknowledging certain things. And also characters being pragmatic to a degree. Trying to be or act more intelligent than in other maybe similar cases. You do not have to agree with that method or with the way of thinking (especially the wife and how she deals with ... infidelity or the prospect/idea of it).
It's funny at times and the family dynamic is quite ... well you'll see. It may be a bit hard to follow at times, but it does look good and again it does treat the viewer as an intelligent individual. That does not mean you have to like what they made with the plot. Hopefully you can dig the overall effort, because if nothing else they really are different - while examining themes we are familiar with ... humans are complex, so is this movie.
Sous la Seine (2024)
Not baby shark
If you have a particular song in your head now ... stuck and can't get it out of your head? I am truly sorry - doo-doo doo-doo ... kidding aside, I really am sorry. And I reckon the script writer is also sorry for some of the things he wrote in this movie (or did the director choose to shoot them?). So no pun intended with anything of the things above.
The movie of course also plays ... below (yes I had to go there, because the movie does too) ... sometimes you may wonder: Since this is not Sharknado, how and why would people be in danger? Well let's circle back to the screen writer ... some of the things we get to see are quite far stretched to say the least. But hey ... just suspend your disbelief ... and watch shark in a pool or whatever the short movie is called. Simple, but more effective than you might think at first I reckon ... it is what it is ... and it is a shark movie.
Atlas (2024)
Roboting it in
As in phoning it in - you surely have heard of that expression/saying, right? No not calling anyone Shirley and also no pun intended in case that is what you thought I was doing (never would I ever). Not sure what you think the movie is doing - but I reckon you will be able to figure that out quite fast.
Jenny from the Block - I love her in different ways. I don't feel she is the best actress out there. On the other hand, she is better than Beyonce or even Gal Gadot (not comparing looks, but acting talent in this case). Which is helping. Simu Liu is also helping - by being the bad guy! A really good one (sorry for the pun) at that. Also the effects are better than I expected - maybe my expectations were too low ... but if you just want to watch a neat Science Fiction movie (that is quite predictable, but hey ... you are not watching this for surprises) ... you could do worse. And while an AI did not write this ... it does seem AI friendly overall ... John Conner and his mom may disagree with some of the message(s)
Migration (2023)
Bird out of the water
No pun intended - and I know it is supposed to be fish out of the water - I hope you saw what I did there or at least are able to now. Of course animated movies already will conjure feelings out of you - for at least some of the viewers. I've said it before, I know people who cannot for the life of them watch them.
And I reckon there are others who prefer them to live action (read with real people, not animated) ones. The movie is one with a message, so it works for the grown ups and the little ones too. You have to like animals of course - who are again humanized for us ... to give us these lessons.
Well done, great voices (actors) and really tight and good script. Jokes do work quite well too. With an ending that is as funny as evident and also quite familiar to ... well families! Again no pun intended! Come fly (away) with me.
Frankenhooker (1990)
Not mind but body blowin(g)
No pun intended -let's get right to it. The effects are quite nasty and quite interesting to say the least. This really went all out there - including showing off flesh (breast area in particular and female of course). But this also takes its sweet time - the beginning has a bang (or rather is razor sharp, sorry not sorry), but after that ... there is quite a lot of ... well nothing much happening.
I had heard of this infamous movie and I reckon if you like horror movies, you may have heard about this too. I suppose you have - no sensitivity, you can't be faint of heart ... be easily offended and all that. The main character/woman was interviewed on the disc I have ... and she looks back fondly to the movie and the shoot. Which says a lot ... and really shines through on screen. If you dig it ... you dig it. If it offends you ... well just shut it off.
Seal of Desire (2022)
Approval ... of Desire (?)
No pun intended - no Seal needed either. I feel for the actors a little bit - to a degree or whatever you want to call it. I reckon the minute it starts it may have already lost (you) ... as viewers that is. Because our main character tells us from the off what he thinks of himself ... and he thinks quite highly of his character ... and not much about others.
Well he may disagree, saying he does care and that is why he does what he does ... but if you boil it down, it is not true. Of course, the actors involved in this ... all quite beautiful ... so if you are into that ... and don't care much about story ... or development ... well you can have some of that. And there is a small amount of nudity too - for better or worse. The story goes more to the latter ...
El Amarre (2021)
Be careful what you wish for
I think that is what they should have called the movie (see my summary line), so as always no pun intended. You have to be in love ... with horror movies that is ... to dig that. Although of course maybe if you were madly in love with someone you may understand our main character ... at least to a degree ... because there is no excuse if you think about it.
But as with most horror movies if characters would not act irrationally, we would not have a movie in the end. So just go with the flow and let the really bad decision making commence. Of course the movie is ridiculous ... but it has to be ... some effects are well done, so maybe that will sway viewers ... low budget - make of it what you want. Love lost ... not entirely .... it's magic (or voodoo)
Miénteme (2022)
Nailed it
No pun intended - while you may think I am talking about one thing (well in a way that is not entirely wrong), I am actually talking about something else entirely (and way more than the other ... innuendo style). There is a saying, that if someone has a hammer, everything looks like a nail to them. And that is quite true .. especially for our main female character at first and then her husband after her.
It is a bit refreshing at times (especially the way they portray their marriage and relationship) ... but it also feels a bit too distant and cold for it's own sake. Some things also feel way over the top, so there is that. Still funny, still light hearted ... if you suspend your disbelief of course. Decent acting.
Ni una más (2024)
Perspective
No pun intended here - we do watch and experience things as ourselves ... we are supposed to have empathy. Which distinguishes us from animals ... but there is more that makes us different. Humans can be quite evil and menacing ... in a very planned way.
That all said, the show is really well crafted. It may be or feel a bit long, especially with the first twist of the show (which I think almost can be called a red herring - it does play a role later on, but not to the degree we may think when we first watch it).
Acting is top notch and the show really challenges you. What to believe? Who to believe? What are your values and what do you think happened? Even heroes are not without flaws ... without making mistakes ... some are quite costly ... but you can't blame them (her) ... if there is doubt, you do want to question, especially demeanor wise ... this really depicts greatly what teenage girls and boys go through. More the former than the latter - and it is important to see that.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024)
Family edition
It's all in the family - someone took Fast & Furious notes. So no pun intended - if anything the Bad Boys have to apologize. But let's keep it "real" . This is a movie, this is insane, this does not make much sense. It will either be carried by the charm (or lack thereof) from our main characters or it won't.
Martin Lawrence is being annoying - always nagging away ... but is he? Because there is an inciting incident, that kind of changes his demeanor. Will Smith has his own issues of course - and we still are dealing with the backlash from the third movie (and I still feel they missed a great chance - naming the third part 4 life? I mean come ... they could have called it ride or die and held on to the 4 ... 4 here).
Good action sequences, even the ones with the Uwe Boll technique (as some are saying online - they may look weird as behind the scenes looks ... but they do work in the movie - very well edited and all that). The question is are you ready to shut off your brain and enjoy this for what it is ... many things do not make sense otherwise. Like not taking one individual who proved to be quite useful to the ... well last mission/ending of the movie.
Maybe in a different universe, there are better plotlines ... but we do live here ... so let's make do with what we get ... and not overthink it. Good soundtrack, almost makes you forget about the cliches.
One for the Road (2023)
Realty check
As with most if not all addictions, the one(s) that are affected by it, can't see it. So no pun intended here as always. And the movie kind of makes it clear from the start. They even talk and tell our main character what he likely is thinking. It does not register with him - at least not to the degree that it would help him or make him change anything.
Lau is a great actor, he really gives it his all. The story is predictable, but you hang on, because you are mesmerized by the performances - that includes the other players (Tschirner to name just one). Cliches and suspension of disbelief go hand in hand - or should go that is.
One for .. home viewing! Best watched sober ...
Finale (2018)
Final(e) word
No pun intended - you have to dig horror movies to be able to enjoy this. You may have heard of torture porn - I would not say that it stoops that low (or high, depending on your own sets of values of course) ... but it is a slasher movie, it does have girls in the main roles that could be considered Scream Queens ... and it has quite a lot of violence in it.
The effects are quite nice, the acting is decent enough too. Story wise not too many surprises .. the editing is ... well interesting. It may throw some people off, you have to pay attention that is for sure. If that sounds like something you want to give a go ... go ahead. Just be sure to cut this some slack ... and suspend your disbelief.
Blindspot (2015)
Tattoo break
As in Prison Break you say? Don't spoil my no pun intended summary line ... what do you mean I did that myself? Well you are probably right. I may have been spoiled by other shows that have higher stakes and have done what this does ... you could compare it to ... 24 a bit! You may have thought I'd go for Prison Break here, but I don't think there is much to that (apart from the Tattoo idea - which ... I mean you can do one season, but even that is quite a stretch).
The show really tries to up the ante, to get you hooked. There are interesting story choices and I really like the actors. Of course in season 5 the latest ... even they are not able to save this (no pun intended - at least story wise ... this really lost it by that point).
If you disagree and thought this is great from start to finish, I am really happy for you. But the storylines, the weird walking the line between humor and drama, the weak twists ... all in the latter seasons as already said ... but I am not rating the first season or seasons for that matter. This is supposed to give you the whole picture.
It may not hit the spot entirely, but it also isn't as blind as some may think it is ... and with that and a congrats for being able to make 100 episodes I bid you farewell.
Yuk po tuen II: Yuk lui sam ging (1996)
Keeps getting harder
I have not seen the first one, actually my first of those movies was the I think fourth part in the series (in 3D) ... which was mad fun. You can not be sensitive or easily offended of course, but the title should have been an indication of that already. Just saying - but back to my summary line: no pun intended as you can hopefully understand.
And while you should know what to expect (not so much Zen, a lot of Sex though), there are scenes or at least one, that is quite cringe. It is one thing to talk about stuff (that are quite discriminating) and another showing them. For our ruler here, no does not mean no - so you can guess where this is heading. Actually the movie is telling is from the start - and I think does reference the first movie (there was something outrageous in the first one if I am not mistaken and it gets referenced here) ... whatever the case, we are being informed that some men, do not care about rights and view women as objects.
According to imdb, Shu Qi (multiple ways to write her name) had another movie under her belt before this ... but this was her breakthrough ... and she bared it all (sorry, but it was too easy - like her character ... although not really of course). This goes from ridiculous to horrific in an instance. While also delivering some "hot" moments. And while these moments are never explicit, they do seem to use ... items to make it look (and feel?) real. Best example is the oral pleasure scene at (under) the table ... sneaky and fun ... or boring maybe for some. But the woman clearly has something in her mouth - and I am quite certain it is not something that is attached to the male individual - I am trying to put it as mildly as I can ... which is hard, to circle back to my first pun.
This mixes a lot of things - be it movie tropes and genres and the characters and the story itself. Again no clue what the first movie did, but it is not like you have the same characters here. This is a new story. Accept it for what it is - lay back and let it .. well ride you! It's not that hard (well ... come on, you know I had to)
Schwarze Milch (2020)
Going back to where you came from
No pun intended - obviously I do not mean what some are saying and meaning when they use that phrase. In this case, our main character does go back to her "home", to her sister. I had no idea what this was and I was surprised at the German I was hearing at the start, including one major independent actor (also can be called a star) ... but it makes sense since this got a lot of funding from Germany.
An interesting drama - but you have to dig the slow pace. And the quite predictable plot from a certain point forward. There is only so many turns you can take when you go to a specific place (physically and mentally that is) ... it will do great with certain people and others will think this is annoying and boring ... which side will you be on?
