Doctor Who - Series 1 - Christopher Eccleston
My thoughts and ratings on Series 1 of Doctor Who.
Season 1 is surprisingly... mostly good. The season never has any bad episodes, but there's definitely a few episodes that I'm okay with never rewatching. With that said, the good vastly outweighs the bad. I love Eccleston. He may only have one season, but he stands as a really strong Doctor. Rose has a few issues, but mostly she's good. Most of the side characters were strong. Overall, Season 1 is just a fun introduction to the show. I still have a bit of a problem with the "Bad Wolf" plot - mainly that it makes no sense - but other than that, this is a good season of television. - 7/10

- DirectorKeith BoakStarsChristopher EcclestonBillie PiperCamille CoduriWhen ordinary shop-worker Rose Tyler meets a mysterious stranger called the Doctor she is drawn into his strange and dangerous world; her life will never be the same again.“Rose” is a solid introduction to Doctor Who. Everything from the awful VFX, nonsensical comedic bits, and just enough lore from the classic series is here to show you what to expect from the show. I still really like Eccleston. Even if he is one of the more forgettable doctors, he feels the most like the ancient alien that he is.
The main plot here is stupid. Plastic people being taken down by “anti-plastic”. It’s hilariously dumb. The plastic Mickey section gets me everytime. Where the episode lacks in plot, it still acts as a good introduction to the show though, so I still it enjoy it enough. - 7/10 - DirectorEuros LynStarsChristopher EcclestonBillie PiperSimon Paisley DayThe Doctor takes Rose on her first voyage through time, to the year five billion and the end of planet Earth. While not completely bad, it's mostly just boring. I like the Rose character moments, the "tree person" character has some neat moments with the Doctor, and the "End of the World" plot is somewhat interesting at first.
My issues mainly derive from Casandra. I've never liked her. She's just a strange antagonist that's unfortunately reoccurring and her backstory could be a lot more interesting than it is. - 6/10 - DirectorEuros LynStarsChristopher EcclestonBillie PiperAlan DavidThe Doctor has great expectations for his latest adventure when he and Rose join forces with Charles Dickens to investigate a mysterious plague of zombies.Bro I simply do not CARE. This episode had the potential to be interesting, but it's just one big snoozefest. - 5/10
- DirectorKeith BoakStarsChristopher EcclestonBillie PiperCamille CoduriThe Doctor returns Rose to her own time - well, sort of - but her family reunion is ruined when a spaceship crashes in the middle of London. What is the origin of the spaceship, and where has the Prime Minister gone in this time of crisis? For the beginning of a two-parter, this episode really just doesn’t have enough to warrant its runtime. The mystery behind the Slitheen is neat and there is a pretty good buildup, but then there’s an entire scene where the aliens are farting… so that’s unepic. - 6/10
- DirectorKeith BoakStarsChristopher EcclestonBillie PiperDavid VerreyThe Slitheen have infiltrated Parliament and have the Doctor and his friends trapped as the Doctor works to prevent them from starting World War Three. This was unnecessary as a two-parter. I think the threat of the Slitheen’s could have been more interesting, but when you drag it on over the course of almost 2 hours - it’s just too much. The character drama is fairly interesting, especially between Rose and her mother. Micky gets clowned on too much for some odd reason, but that’s a problem with the show as a whole. Overall, it’s not bad, but it’s not that great either. - 6/10
- DirectorJoe AhearneStarsChristopher EcclestonBillie PiperSteven BeckinghamThe TARDIS is drawn to an alien museum deep below the Utah desert, where a ruthless billionaire keeps prisoner the last of the Doctor's most fearsome enemies.Easily the best episode of the show so far. We’re finally getting things set up for the season (and the future). I love the (re)introduction to the dalek. This is just a solid episode. - 8/10
- DirectorBrian GrantStarsChristopher EcclestonBillie PiperBruno LangleyIn the year 200,000 the Doctor discovers that a satellite with a dark secret is controlling humanity and slowing its development. This is a fun episode. I'm not a fan of the dumb guy they take a long as a companion, but I did end up enjoying what happens to him. Simon Pegg is another fun addition. Nothing amazing, but a solid episode anyways. - 7/10
- DirectorJoe AhearneStarsChristopher EcclestonBillie PiperCamille CoduriRose asks The Doctor to take her to 1987, on the day her father was killed.Probably my favorite episode of the show up to this point. Still not amazing, but there's some great character moments for Rose. The decision to include an alien monster that correlates with time travel is stupid though. - 8/10
- DirectorJames HawesStarsChristopher EcclestonBillie PiperKate HarveyWhen a spaceship crashes in the middle of the London Blitz the Doctor, Rose and the enigmatic Captain Jack Harkness find themselves investigating a plague of physical injuries and a little boy in a gas mask.Wow. Uh... it's finally some GOOD Doctor Who.
Season 1 has been a bit of a slog to get through. I remembered this season being a lot better than it really is. With that said, this two-parter is fantastic. It's just a really good STORY. Things are built up properly in this half and... - 9/10 - DirectorJames HawesStarsChristopher EcclestonBillie PiperAlbert ValentineThe gas mask zombies are on the rise as the plague spreads across war-torn London.... concluded well in this part! The monsters have a purpose and are pretty horrifying. The side characters all have a purpose and have their own unique story beats. Captain Jack is a great addition to the cast. It's just great. - 9/10
- DirectorJoe AhearneStarsChristopher EcclestonBillie PiperWilliam ThomasStopping off in present-day Cardiff to recharge the TARDIS, The Doctor, Rose and Jack meet up with Mickey and encounter an old foe in the midst of hatching a scheme that could destroy the entire planet. This episode is okay. It's a good follow up to the Slitheen episodes from earlier (both of which where fine). I liked moments of this episode more than the whole of it. Nothing bad, but could've been better. - 7/10
- DirectorJoe AhearneStarsChristopher EcclestonBillie PiperJohn BarrowmanThe Doctor, Rose and Jack are separated and forced to compete in twisted and deadly games on the Game Station. The two part season finale starts with a bang! I'll always love the game show parody plot device. Every main character has some great moments here. That ending is absolutely fantastic and leads into a pretty banging finale. - 10/10
- DirectorJoe AhearneStarsChristopher EcclestonBillie PiperJohn BarrowmanAs the Dalek fleet begin their attack on the Earth, the Doctor and his allies make one final stand.Great finale! While there's a lot of really quirky decisions here (Deus Ex Rose), there's too many great scenes and character moments for me to call it bad. - 9/10
